Episode 19: I Love You

I worked so hard until I couldn’t stand up.
I was betrayed by everything, and it reminded me of that day when I lost it for the first time.
It was hard to breathe, and I was on the verge of losing consciousness, but that was the last thing I saw.
I couldn’t help but smile in despair.
I crouched down and let the tears flow.
I let out a dry voice from the back of my throat.
No matter how much I thought about it, I couldn’t come up with an idea that could overturn this situation, and now that I was on the stage, I couldn’t come down until I was rotting away.
Shit, shit, shit, I hit the ground, shit, shit, shit, no way I can compete with the dense sand, blood dripping from my knuckles, shit, shit, shit, everything has become irrelevant.
I hated my very existence, and my brain was filled with words of self-denial.
I’m sure people think I’m pathetic and ridiculous, crying and regretting in the dark like a coward.
That’s me, Helios Crowley, the pathetic man.
If you ask me how I feel right now…
(…aahhh… aahhh…)
“I want to die,” would be my words.
Slap.
There was a strong sound echoing through the surroundings.
The sound had occurred right in front of me.
When I looked up, I saw Lute with reddened cheeks and Dorothy with sharp eyes glaring straight at him.
Her expression was a mixture of anger and sadness.
Lute, who didn’t quite understand her expression, was stunned as he put his hand on his cheek.
Dorothy gave him a serious slap on the cheek, so he was probably confused.
“Areh, w-what’s going on?”
Multiple questions flooded from Lute’s mouth, not understanding what was going on. Dorothy, on the other hand, kept her gaze fixed on him and finally opened her mouth.
“…You’re the one who needs to stop, Lute. How many more people are you going to make sad in the future?”
Lute approached Dorothy to wipe away her tears, but she pushed him away and rejected him.
(Even though I saved her from being brainwashed, what a terrible thing for her to say to me.)
“W-Wait… isn’t the brainwashing supposed to be over already?”
“Brainwashing? Helios-kun is worse at magic than anyone else. He shouldn’t know such advanced magic at all. Even if he did, he wouldn’t have the skill and mana to be able to use it.”
Lute denied that possibility as vehemently as he could.
“Look at the scar on my face, it’s such a wreck! Would I be like this to someone who can’t even use magic?”
“Yes, you would!”
In fact, there was no fatal damage done from magic at all.
The only effective wounds he was given were the raw blows given by Helios, and because he was worse at magic than anyone else, he made up for it with his body.
When I looked around, no students were protesting against her words.
“Compared to Helios-kun, it only takes a lick for you to heal a wound like that, right?”
“That… That is, right.”
“But what’s fair and square over here? Where is the right and wrong in this one-sided battle? Why are you doing this!”
“I’m trying to undo your brainwashing! You’ve been acting crazy for the past few days now. I’m the one who…”
Lute said, his cheeks reddening with embarrassment.
“I loved you so much… But, you became cold and began avoiding me. You also stopped sitting next to me anymore. You, my childhood friend, should know best how hard it was for me… Dorothy, the cheerful girl who always showed me a cheerful smile, was no longer next to me.”
In the beginning of the school year, Lute’s gaze was always directed towards Dorothy, no matter how many women surrounded him.
He had been with her ever since they were children, and he wanted to make her happy.
No matter how many other girls confess to him, he would always say no to all of them, just because he was always thinking about Dorothy.
“Let’s go home, just like we always have in the past, okay?”
In front of her, Dorothy was at a loss for words.
No matter how much she tried to deny it, this man had always been a man of sheer optimism.
It was a falsehood, it was all just an assumption on his part.
This is why Dorothy had no choice but to shake her head and confess clearly in order to avoid responding to the love that had been instilled in her like any other girl.
“I’ve never thought of myself as being in love with you in the past though…?”
Lute’s body stiffened like a rock before he could even question the reply which came out of her mouth, which he had never received before.
“I love only one person, which is Helios-kun, that’s for sure. I’m so crazy about him that I can’t sleep at night just thinking about him. I love his face, his voice, his personality. I love him so much that I want him to be mine!”
Dorothy felt so embarrassed by the situation that she was confessing her love to him even though he was nearby, she felt like her head was going to boil from the shame.
“I was finally able to get along with Helios-kun! So why do you keep getting in my way! I don’t understand what you mean by ‘brainwashing’!”
The girl revealed her true feelings more passionately than ever before.
Something was wrong. The story deviated from the usual plot and took an unexpected turn.
It’s hard to say that this was the normal development where the hero wins and gets the heroine in the end. Rejected, Lute’s mouth fell open and froze. Deciding that there was no point in saying anything, Dorothy pushed him away and leaned in close to comfort the man she loved.
“…Helios-kun.”
He turned his head with empty eyes and knelt on the ground as if he had lost all strength, he was so fragile that he could collapse at any moment.
It looked so painful that it was hard to look at.
Unable to bear it, Dorothy shed more tears and hugged him gently and lovingly to keep him from breaking apart.
I don’t know what will happen anymore.
I don’t even have a clear answer on how to heal his heart.
(Someone, please help me…)
I prayed and asked for help.
I even had an blind hope that it would somehow reach someone.
“———You’ve taken the liberty of doing this, everyone.”
Ms. Maguire, the sorcerer of this space, appeared with several teachers in tow.
There was also a youthful looking young man with silver hair and a pair of glasses. It was the ‘Headmaster Lobelia’ of Arcadia Academy of Magic.
He was walking towards the ringleader who had violated the purpose of the class, radiating a tremendous amount of magic power, that if felt up close you’d feel as if he was furious.
He then held up his hand and captured Lute with a binding magic that nobody with the naked eye would be able to see.
