- Chapter 27: A Kansai Boy Invites Them to His Home.
A Kansai Boy Invites Them to His Home.
For some reason, I ended up tutoring even Fuyuki-san in our math study group.
Man… this problem’s a real beast. Do second-year high schoolers these days really tackle stuff this hard? It’s ridiculous.
Well, this Sumizome Academy is apparently a pretty elite school, so maybe this is just the standard around here. Still… did I ever learn this kind of thing myself?
“Thanks, Tennouji-kun. Thanks to you, I think I’ll be able to study math more efficiently at home tonight.”
“That’s good to hear. It’s been a good review for me too.”
“I’m glad to hear that. It’s better than studying alone, right?”
“Sure is. Especially when I get to be taught by a beauty like you, Fuyuki-san.”
“……I see.”
Ah—crap. I said something weird again. If I go around calling her beautiful, it’ll sound like I’m trying to seduce her—like the original Tennouji from the source material—tricking her, making her dependent, and then dropping her.
Oh no… Fuyuki-san’s glaring at me now. She’s touching her hair, that little habit of hers when she’s annoyed… Great, I really messed up.
“Tennouji-kun… may I ask you something here too?”
“Oh, Akitani-san! Sure, what part?”
I quickly turned my gaze away from Fuyuki-san as Akitani-san approached.
Later, I heard from Shina that Fuyuki-san had been glaring at me the whole time… and apparently, Imamiya was too.
“You just substitute this solution into this part here.”
“Oh, I see, I see… Wow! It worked! Tennouji-kun, you’re really good at teaching! The teacher’s method is always so confusing…”
“Well, I think a teacher’s job is to make what’s confusing easy to understand, though.”
“Ahaha…”
“Daiki-kun, maybe you could become a teacher someday! You totally could!”
“Nah, being a teacher sounds tough. I wouldn’t want that job.”
“Then at least be our teacher during this study session—with Rin-chan!”
“Uh, sure…”
Shina-san looked absolutely ready to have me teach her everything.
Still, Fuyuki-san was impressive—she went around patiently teaching nearly ten people. She’d probably make a great cram school instructor… though with how meticulous she is, she’d probably work herself to death.
“Hey, Shina, I’m free now! Tennouji looks busy, so come over here!”
Since more and more classmates were coming to ask me for help, I couldn’t focus on teaching Shina anymore.
But she’d hover nearby, take notes, and ask questions when she could, so I guess that was fine.
Imamiya, though—he was probably trying to keep her from getting too close to me. Sneaky guy.
“It’s fine. As long as I stick with Daiki-kun, I’ll understand everything eventually.”
…Wait. Did Shina just click her tongue under her breath?
That’s scary. Didn’t she just go to ask Imamiya a question earlier? And her tone now… way colder.
***
“Oh, I get it now! That’s how it works! Thanks, Daiki-kun!”
“Ah, no problem. Fukakusa-san, was that explanation okay?”
The tone she used with Imamiya versus the one she used with me… total opposite.
She was all cheerful with me, but with him—
Wait, did Imamiya just mutter ‘damn it’?
Does Shina actually hate Imamiya? That’d be a problem… I swore I’d support their lovey-dovey school life, but if the plan’s already falling apart, what am I supposed to do?
(Daiki-kun. You can just ignore Toshiya-kun…)
“…!?”
That whisper—holy crap! Shina’s hushed ASMR voice is dangerous! It melts my brain! Seriously, what’s with this girl!? Why’s she whispering in my ear all of a sudden!?
(He said, ‘You can’t even solve something like this?’ when I asked him a question. Pissed me off so bad.)
…He said that?
No way. That’s not okay. Even if you understand something, people ask because they don’t.
A teacher—or anyone helping—should never say stuff that belittles someone for not knowing. That’s crossing a line you shouldn’t cross.
I just nodded to show I understood, and avoided looking in Imamiya’s direction.
***
“Hmm, it’s already five. Let’s take a short break. Tennouji-kun, didn’t the teacher give you some money? Let’s grab a drink and rest.”
“Uuugh… Rin-chaaaan, my head’s smoking…”
“Oh my, you worked hard. Just a little more to go. Have a drink and hang in there.”
“Uuuh… Mio-chaaan…”
“Ahaha, let’s keep it up, okay? Shi-chan, your focus is amazing!”
Shina was practically glued to me the whole time, scribbling notes furiously—definitely not slacking off. She was really serious about studying. Honestly, impressive.
“Mmm… sweet drinks taste so good…”
“Your brain’s probably craving sugar. You’ve been using it nonstop.”
“I solved the parts you taught me all by myself this time! I worked really hard!”
“That’s great. Keep up that energy for the other subjects too.”
“Ah… ehehe, okay!”
I ended up patting her head again. She leaned in close, and I couldn’t resist… then she rubbed her head against my hand, too—
That’s way too cute, seriously. Whoa—Fuyuki-san’s staring straight at me… and Akitani-san too, looking kind of spaced out. Did I do something wrong?
“Thanks to you, Tennouji-kun, Shina’s really motivated. If she keeps this up, she might actually do well in math. Let’s keep that pace and work on her weak point—World History—next, okay?”
“Nooo! Math alone’s already killing me! My brain’s gonna explode!”
“You can’t just be good at one subject, Shi-chan. Your grades were barely passing last term. Let’s have Tennouji-kun help you out again.”
“Ugh… if it’s Daiki-kun teaching, then… okay…”
“Sure thing. World History’s one of my strong points anyway.”
“Seriously!? Then I’m counting on you!”
“You’re so quick to change your tune…”
“What about English?”
“Ugh… uuuh…”
Yeah, I’m definitely gonna have to help her out properly. Hmm, maybe we could use Saturday too. Gotta give her a rest on Sunday though—after all that cramming, the brain needs time to sort things out.
“How about this—we study hard and rest the brain on Sunday. Would you guys be up for another session on Saturday?”
“I’d love to!”
“Alright, then Saturday it is. Now, where should we hold it…”
“Oh, I’d like to join too! Is that okay?”
“Of course! What about you, Fuyuki-san?”
“Are you sure? Then I suppose I’ll join as well. But where would we meet?
Even before exams, the school doesn’t stay open on Saturdays.”
“The library’s crowded too since everyone’s studying for exams…”
“Eeh!? But I wanna study with Daiki-kun and everyone!”
“Hmm, somewhere four of us can study comfortably… A family restaurant or café might not like us staying long…”
Then it hit me. A perfect idea.
“How about… my place?”
“““Eh!?”””
“My parents are up in Hokkaido right now, so it’s just me. We can study all day—no need to worry about anything. Come around ten or eleven, and I’ll even make lunch for everyone.”
“Whaaat!? Really!? I wanna go! I wanna go!”
“Oh, but that feels like too much to ask…”
“It’s fine. I’m just gonna be home anyway. No parents to interfere, and we can take breaks whenever we want. Plus, my mom’s got this whole collection of fancy teas—she’s obsessed with them. We can even have a little tea time. I’ll ask for her permission, just in case.”
“…Are you really sure?”
“Absolutely! So, Saturday—study session at my place!”
“Yay! I can’t wait!”
“Th-then, I’ll come too.”
“If you’re sure, Tennouji-kun… then yes, I’ll come as well.”
“Alright, sounds like a plan!”
Three of my favorite girls… coming to my house. I gotta admit, that was a pretty bold idea—but it turned out great.
Alright then… time to start cleaning up and preparing to host them.
