Chapter 42: Lunch Break in Hell
Lunch break.
After finishing the boring third period class, classmates who were not usually together gathered around and pushed their desks together.
Haruya usually eats lunch alone, but lately he has been eating with Yuki sometimes.
However, today he couldn’t eat alone despite Yuki not being with him.
“Shall we talk and socialize with each other?”
“Y-yeah, that sounds good. It seems like everyone else is doing it too.”
“That’s great.”
Following Sara, Yuki and Yuko nodded in agreement.
Haruya felt like he had become invisible among the group, but inside he was sweating profusely.
(This is bad… too bad…)
Trying to act inconspicuous, he looked down and behaved as best he could, but then Sara’s gaze fell on him as if she were asking, “What about you?”
Haruya silently nodded his head, hoping to avoid any further attention being drawn to him.
Sara beamed at him and said, “Great! Let’s get to know each other better!”
She made a small fist in front of her ample chest and announced, “Let’s have a group discussion to get to know each other better!”
The boys around them glared with jealous and envious looks.
“Congratulations, Akasaki. We’re the winners now.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because we’re in the same group as Himekawa-san!”
Haruya muttered under his breath, “Don’t come whispering in my ear like that, I couldn’t care less,” as Yuki leaned in close to him.
Surrounded by Yuki, Sara, and Yuko, Haruya has now become a part of the student group that was chosen through a lottery system during their first year in high school.
As they were still in the early stages of getting to know each other, they decided to spend their lunch together.
The boys who were lucky enough to be in a group with the S-class beauties were visibly pleased, but Haruya couldn’t help thinking, “Please give me a break.”
“Well then, Kazemiya-san, please take that seat over there.”
“Okay.”
“Yuko-san, please sit next to me.”
“Yes.”
“And, um, Akasaki-san, please sit next to Kazemiya-san.”
It seemed that Sara had the authority over the seating arrangement of this group. She had dutifully designated a seat for each member.
Thanks to that, Haruya found himself sitting facing Sara.
(Why… why is this happening…)
Although he wanted to deny it out loud, it would be meaningless and would only draw unnecessary attention to himself.
If he were to say “I don’t want this seat”, it would only make him stand out even more.
So Haruya had no choice but to grit his teeth and endure the uncomfortable feeling as he opened his bento box and started to eat.
(I just hope this time will pass peacefully without any trouble…)
Haruya swallowed hard and silently prayed.
♦︎♢♦︎
Haruya had hoped that lunchtime would pass by peacefully, but his wish was shattered by Yuki’s first words after the tension had dissipated.
“By the way, Himekawa-san, you have a crush on someone in this school, right?”
“Huh? What!?”
Sara’s face quickly turned red and froze. Her lips trembled and she seemed to have answered through her expression without even speaking.
It was already a topic that had been shared among their classmates, but even for Sara, it seemed surprising to suddenly have such a topic brought up.
“Well, um, yes. There is someone I have feelings for.”
“Ah!”
“Is that the guy you were talking to after he helped you with some guy who was hitting on you?”
“Y-yes…”
Sara covered her face with both hands and turned her face bright red to the point where a “pshuu” sound could be heard.
Seeing Yuki’s smirk, it seemed as if he had brought up this topic just to see Sara’s expression.
(…Please spare me, what kind of torture is this?)
It was a completely fabricated story with no basis in reality: the fact that Sara was in love with Haruya, who had a hidden side. Hearing this story up close, there was no way Haruya could not be nervous.
“Hey, Akasaki… Why is your face all red?”
“…Shut up.”
“Hmm, your voice sounds lower than usual.”
“It’s normal.”
“No, normally you sound more like this—”
Sara watched Yuki’s oddly sharp observation with interest.
(…Please stop. Don’t look at me, don’t look at me)
For some reason, Sara stared intently at Haruya, her expression puzzled.
(Oh… Wait, could it be… Is this bad?)
