Chapter 41: Freshmen Exchange Meeting
“… sigh. How did this happen…”
On Monday morning, Haruya sighed as he arrived at school.
What was troubling him was the fact that he had exchanged contact information with the S-class beauties.
Fortunately, none of them had contacted him yet, but he didn’t know what would happen in the future.
After all, there had been a change since he exchanged contact information with them.
“…sigh. But even so, they’re not denying my existence…”
Haruya’s heavy sigh was influenced by a certain event that had happened a few minutes ago.
When he entered the classroom and was about to sit down at his desk, he suddenly made eye contact with the S-class beauties who were chatting around their seats. They nodded or smiled at him.
In the past, even if their eyes briefly met, nothing happened and they just ignored him. But now, they were responding to him.
Haruya’s heart was pounding inside.
(They’re not approaching me, which is good, but if this continues… eventually…)
Just thinking about what might happen in the future was terrifying.
He already resented his little sister, who had gone back to his parents’ house. Haruya let out another deep sigh and Yuki came over while stifling a yawn.
“What’s wrong? Akasaki, are you on your period today?”
“Shut up.”
“Sorry, sorry. But you seem more moody than usual today.”
“If you know, then leave me alone.”
“Even if you say that… Today’s a day when you have to raise your spirits, especially for you, Akasaki.”
“…”
Yuki’s gaze pleaded with Haruya to look around at their classmates. He lazily gazed at them and noticed that they seemed more lively than usual.
(…I have a bad feeling about this.)
As Haruya narrowed his eyes and looked down, Yuki sitting next to him rambled on about unrelated topics.
“It seems like everyone is getting excited about the freshman exchange meeting. Well, for us first-years, it’s a chance to expand our circle of friends.”
“…”
“From the looks of it, hey Akasaki. Do you even know anything about it?”
“…”
Silence was the confirmation.
Although Haruya couldn’t say it out loud, he had absolutely no memory of the freshman exchange meeting that Yuki was talking about.
Even now, listening to Yuki’s story, he only had a vague sense of recognition like “Oh, was there such a thing?”.
Yuki sighed and placed his hand on Haruya’s shoulder, as if he had gotten used to this kind of reaction.
“Spring might come for us too at this exchange meeting… Let’s both do our best.”
“What are you trying to comfort me for? I’m not seeking spring or anything like that.”
To be honest, Haruya just wanted to be left alone for now.
“Well, anyway, we’re going to decide on our groups today, so I hope we end up in the same one.”
“Yeah, me too.”
Haruya engaged in casual conversation with Yuki, matching his light-hearted tone.
But then, he thought to himself, “How do they decide on the groups?”
And by the time he realized it, it was already too late.
♦︎♢♦︎
In the morning homeroom, the teacher began to explain about the freshman exchange meeting as soon as he entered the classroom.
In summary, the contents of the teacher’s explanation were as follows:
* It’s a two-day training session.
* Groups will be decided by drawing lots.
* Each group will consist of four people.
* Enjoy it without going overboard.
It was like a prelude to a school trip.
School trips usually begin in the second year of high school, but for first-year students, this freshman orientation event was probably the equivalent of a school trip.
Looking at the classmates who were happily talking and getting along with each other, it seemed that they were really looking forward to this event.
However, Haruya was the only one who seemed completely uninterested.
(… Are they going to draw lots to determine the groups? Should I be thankful or not for that?)
Perhaps the reason why they were drawing lots to determine the groups was to avoid having unpopular students left out if the others just grouped up with their friends.
Although the content of this event may have seemed like a relief to Haruya, whose circle of friends was too small, it seemed like it was not the case this time.
Sara, Yuna, and Rin. These three girls kept crossing Haruya’s mind.
Even though he knew it was unlikely, he couldn’t say for sure that he wouldn’t end up in the same group as them.
Haruya was sweating nervously.
“There are papers in this box with numbers 1 to 10 written on them. Everyone draw a paper and those who get the same number will be in the same group. Alright then, I will pass the box around, so go ahead and draw.”
As the homeroom teacher said this, she began to circulate the box from the front row.
If you looked around, you could see the boys praying for “Please let us be in the same group as the S-class beauties.”
In fact, near Haruya’s seat…
“Either Himekawa-san or Takamori-san, either Himekawa-san or Takamori-san,” a classmate’s voice could be heard reciting those names like a mantra.
(Scary… On the other hand, I don’t really care who I’m with as long as it’s not someone from the S-class beauties.)
Haruya, who held an opposing opinion to the boys in the class, ended up drawing a paper with the number “4” on it.
Lowering his head, he repeated the phrase “I hope I don’t end up in the same group as the S-class beauties” over and over again, and soon everyone had finished drawing their lots.
“Alright, everyone gather with those who have the same number as you,” the homeroom teacher exclaimed, and the class erupted into excitement as they searched for their classmates with the same number.
“By the way, Akasaki, what number did you get?”
Yuki asked with a cheerful tone, showing his white teeth.
“I got number four.”
“Oh, me too! What a coincidence.”
“Yeah.”
At least Haruya was relieved that he had ended up in the same group as someone he knew.
Yuki then cleared his throat and raised his hand, shouting out,
“Group four, gather over here!”
Within seconds, two other members came over to join Haruya’s group.
At that moment, Haruya’s body froze.
“…Yuko Ayase, I’m also number 4. Pleased to meet you.”
One of the girls, Yuko Ayase, was plain-looking, but his attention was drawn to the other girl.
“Sara Himekawa…um, I’m also in group four. Nice to meet you!”
Sara was one of the girls Haruya least wanted to be in the same group with.
Haruya was dumbfounded and speechless, but Yuki leaned in and whispered to him,
“Nicely done. We’ve pulled in one of the S-class beauties! The number four is a lucky number!”
(No…it’s the number of death.)
Haruya thought to himself, grimacing.
(…Please spare me. Should I just take the day off?)
