Chapter 3: Called by the Handsome Girl
“So, what was the reason you got dumped?”
While preparing for the first period, Higuchi asked with keen interest, seemingly quite entertained by it as if it was someone else’s business.
“I mean, there was a bit of a ‘love beyond our status’ vibe, but from what I saw, you two were getting along well.”
Higuchi suddenly lowered his voice.
“…Don’t tell me, you forced her into something sexual and she hated you for it?”
“Ha!? No way!”
I couldn’t help but exclaim in a startled voice and stood up, drawing the attention of all our classmates chatting in the room.
“Ah, no, um, ahaha… sorry,”
I sat back down with a strained smile, bowing repeatedly. With a resigned look, Higuchi shrugged his shoulders, and I whispered back,
“I would never do such a thing!”
In fact, it was quite the opposite. For these three months, my relationship with Ena-chan was purely wholesome. Of course, as a healthy high school boy, it’s not like I have no interest in that stuff.
But considering she’s a refined and top student, I thought she’d dislike being too clingy, especially since we just started dating. I hardly even held her hand, thinking she’d hate it.
I was invited to her house a few times to watch a movie when her parents weren’t around, but I swear I never made a move. I tried my best not to do anything she might dislike.
“Ahaha, I’m just kidding. I know Souta isn’t like that. You’re serious in a weird way, kind of a gentleman. Oh no, maybe you’re just naive.”
Just leave me alone. It’s none of your business.
“So, why did you get dumped in the end?”
“…I don’t want to say.”
I couldn’t possibly admit something so embarrassing as her cheating on me with another girl… Especially not when same-sex relationships aren’t that uncommon these days, and even less so when the other person is that handsome beauty, Mizushima.
But still, as a guy, it feels utterly humiliating. Ah, really… I was such a fool to get all excited about having a girlfriend for the first time.
“It’s over… I’m done… I’ll probably never have a girlfriend again and die alone…”
When I finally slumped over the desk, Higuchi waved his hand with a wry smile.
“Come on, don’t be so dramatic.”
“It’s not an exaggeration. Listen, Higuchi. You might not understand since you’re popular, but for a loner like me to have had such a cute girlfriend was really lucky. A miracle like that probably won’t happen again…”
Yeah. Probably, such a lucky encounter will never happen again…
“Ehh, for real? I think Souta has always been a kind and good guy at heart, and there must be plenty of girls who would like you. Aren’t you being a bit too self-deprecating? Remember, even during the field trip in fourth grade…”
“Alright, alright, thanks for the praise. Geez, popular guys are really good at flattery.”
“It’s not flattery. And it’s not like I’m particularly popular. It’s just that the older girls are always nice to me, and I just try to respond to that kindness.”
Saying it as if it was nothing, Higuchi showed a smile like a friendly puppy. Wow… that’s scary, this natural-born charmer of older girls.
Ever since elementary school, it’s been the same. Those “older sisters” must have all had their maternal instincts or something struck hard by his sweet facade. I’m so jealous it’s not even funny.
Sighing, I slowly got up from my seat.
“Hey, where are you going?”
“To the washroom. I’ll be right back.”
Leaving the classroom, I headed for the nearest washroom… which was probably crowded, so I went to a less popular one a bit further away.
“Ah… I would have been better off staying single from the start…”
Muttering complaints, I finished my business, washed my hands, and was just coming out of the bathroom when…
“─Ah, took you so long.”
“…Huh?”
I was taken aback by the person waiting outside.
“Good morning, ex-boyfriend-kun. Or should I say, Souta Sakuhara-kun?”
“Y-You!?”
The person waiting for me was none other than the very individual who stole my girlfriend away. The charismatic, handsome girl, Shizuno Mizushima.
“Can we talk for a sec? There’s something I want to discuss… just the two of us.”
