Chapter 26: The Wimpy, Overpossessive Prince
[Rei’s POV]
“Thanks for having me~ Wow, the view’s amazing. As expected from a tower apartment. Totally different from my family’s massive, single-story mansion.”
“You sure know how to slip in a flex, Rinna-chan.”
With a sigh, I dropped my school bag onto the sofa.
“Your mom’s Kanon Hoshina, right? Since she’s a top actress, I guess it makes sense you’d live in a fancy place like this.”
“Flattery won’t get you anywhere.”
Coming from Rinna-chan—
Someone even more of an ojou-sama than me—it just sounded snide.
“Oh? Then how about acting like a good host, and bringing out some tea or snacks? I am a guest, you know.”
I sighed deeply again,
Annoyed by this audacious, uninvited robber,
And headed off to prepare some tea.
It was after school.
And right now, in this very expensive apartment with no mom around,
Rinna-chan had barged in, tagging along half against my will,
And was now making herself completely at home.
What kind of nerves does this woman have?
Seriously, how does Saito even manage to stay friends with someone like her?
“You spoiled rich girl.”
“Says the wimpy, overpossessive prince.”
“Hey! That insult had layers! And why are you even here in my house, Rinna-chan!?”
She totally forced her way in!
Ever since our first meeting—where she made me cry—I’ve had trauma-level avoidance when it comes to Rinna-chan.
On a scale of scary experiences, Rinna-chan ranks way above that guy who hit me on the train.
“I couldn’t help it, okay? I was planning to go to Saito’s place after school, but then he said he was hanging out with his middle school friends.”
“That still doesn’t explain why you’re at my place! Ugh… Saito’s the worst too. How could he just ditch me and go have fun with his hometown friends?”
As I chewed on a nail,
The memory of this morning came flooding back.
In the end, Saito decided to take his old friends around the city after school,
Which meant our after-school plans were totally scrapped.
“Hey… Wimpy Prince.”
“I told you to stop calling me that.”
“Are you seriously saying that? Keep acting like this, and Saito really will drift away from you, you know?”
“Eh…?”
Maybe it was because Saito wasn’t around.
But Rinna-chan, sprawled out on the sofa like some grumpy middle-aged uncle, casually dropped a bomb that hit way harder than I expected.
“Of course he’d want to spend time with old friends who came all the way to see him. That’s totally normal.”
“You’re surprisingly understanding, Rinna-chan.”
“The wimpy prince is just being childish—getting jealous over nothing as usual.”
“But… when I see Saito smiling and having fun with people I don’t know… it makes me feel all weird and restless inside.”
“That’s… well, I kinda get it.”
“See? I knew it. Even you, Rinna-chan—Saito’s friend—must be curious about those hometown girls and that clingy little sister type, right? I mean, what if they use their connection to steal him away like some sneaky cat burglar?”
“Technically, we’re the outsiders. Eiji-kun’s sister knew Saito way before we ever did. So if anyone’s the sneaky cat burglar… it’s us.”
“Wow… you’re weirdly calm about this. Do you even really love Saito, Rinna-chan?”
“H-How can you say something so embarrassing with a straight face…?”
Rinna-chan turned bright red for some reason.
“What’s so weird about it? I love Saito. Ever since he saved me on that train, he’s been my prince.”
“Ahaha! Prince, huh? That doesn’t sound like Saito at all.”
“Don’t laugh! He looked super cool when he stood up for me on that train!”
I still remember that moment vividly.
My mom and Sasaki-san always tell me not to dwell on it,
But honestly, I don’t really remember the guy’s face,
Or the pain of getting hit, or even the fear.
What burned itself into my memory…
Was the profile of the prince who stood in front of me,
And the broad back that protected me.
“Wow, the wimpy prince is way too easy, huh. Maybe it was a good thing I didn’t go to an all-girls school. Having no guy experience probably made it easy for someone like Saito to reel you in.”
“Shut up. You’re the one who keeps trash-talking Saito, even though you like him.”
“Wha—!? N-No I don’t! It’s not like I’m drooling over him like you are!”
“I never said anything about drooling! Geez, Rinna-chan, you’re a girl—can’t you choose your words better?”
She might look like a proper lady…
But her mouth says otherwise.
“As for me… it’s just friendship, really. I don’t like him or anything like that. Saito’s just… the first person I’ve ever had a truly equal friendship with.”
“…You really mean that?”
I looked at Rinna-chan, a little suspicious.
This morning, she got jealous about Airi the same way I did.
“I do. That’s why… I’m a little jealous of you. You can say what you’re feeling without overthinking it or holding back.”
“Holding back?”
Gazing off into the distance,
Rinna-chan gave a quiet, lonely little smile.
“Not that it matters saying this to you, Wimpy Prince.”
“If only your mouth wasn’t so sharp, you’d totally look like a proper young lady…”
“Saito said the exact same thing.”
“Wait—was that supposed to be a flex?”
“Please. Let’s be real. You and I aren’t even competing on the same level.”
“Oh-ho… now you’ve said it!”
Yeah…
There’s no way I’m ever becoming friends with Rinna-chan.
As I watched my so-called romantic rival casually sip tea across from me,
I couldn’t help but think—once again—just how amazing Saito really was.
And in that moment,
I made up my mind.
There’s no way I’m letting Rinna-chan have him.

Despite everything,
These two actually get along surprisingly well.
