Chapter 25: It’s Kinda Embarrassing When Friends from Your Hometown See You Like This
“So… this is how it ended up, huh.”
After getting off at the station near our high school,
I muttered to myself while glancing at the two girls clinging to each of my arms.
Yep.
Rei on one side, Rinna on the other.
That’s how I ended up going to school today.
Surprisingly though, both of them were being quiet.
The noisy argument they had at my front door earlier,
Or even the energy they usually had—
All of it had vanished.
Even during the train ride, they stayed oddly silent.
Both of them looked dazed, like their minds were somewhere else.
Ever since I scolded them at the door, they’d been like this.
“Hey. You two awake?”
At first, I thought it was kinda nice—
Way better than having them fight with me stuck in the middle.
But now, with this eerie silence, it just felt unsettling.
“I’m fine… It’s just that the image of Saito’s muscles is running wild through my head. But it’d be rude to chase them out, So I’m letting them sprint around in the little garden inside my brain.”
“Skin color… the way the pectorals and deltoids bulged… a boy’s body, different from mine…”
…Yeah. They’re definitely not fine.
Ever since earlier, all they’ve been talking about is muscles.
Was seeing me shirtless really that much of a shock to them?
“Wait a second—Rei, you’re just casually getting off at the same station as me even though it’s my school’s station!”
Since I had a girl on each arm,
I naturally drew all the attention on the train.
Feeling super awkward, I pretty much bolted off at my stop—
Only to realize Rei, who didn’t even go to my school, had casually followed me.
“Huh? Oh, it’s fine. I had the hire car scheduled to drop me off near your high school from the start. I’ll keep doing it from now on too.”
“Wait… Isn’t that kind of a waste of money…?”
You’re paying for both the hire car and the train fare, after all.
“It’s not a waste. If it means I get to spend even a little more time with you, Saito, then it’s worth every yen. Besides, I’m paying for the hire car with my own allowance.”
“That’s a pretty unusual way to spend your allowance as a high schooler…”
Well, Rei has always been a stubborn prince once she sets her mind on something.
“Though there’s still a pesky little bug getting in the way.”
“Oh my, are you talking to your reflection, you wimpy little prince?”
Looks like they were finally snapping out of the muscle-shock from earlier—
Because Rei and Rinna started sparking at each other again, with me stuck in the middle.
Honestly,
We’re on the route to school right now, so could you two please stop fighting?
It’s way too attention-grabbing…
“Rinna-chan, you sit next to Saito at school, right? You already get to hang out with him all the time. And now you’re even trying to steal the little bit of time I get with him during the commute? You’re basically the embodiment of greed.”
“Oh my, and what exactly is wrong with walking to school with a friend?”
“Yeah, but… if you’re just friends, isn’t it kind of weird to be linking arms?”
“T-That’s only because this wimpy prince here keeps clinging to Saito! If you two are arm-in-arm and I’m just walking beside you, people might think I’m your servant or something!”
Even though my point was perfectly reasonable,
Rinna’s answer was kinda vague.
Where was that sharp, logical side of hers that could make Rei cry with just pure reasoning?
Just as I was thinking maybe I should calmly argue back and get her to let go—
“That’s why I’m telling you—Bring out the Whoa-Whoa Dude!”
“Bring him out! Bring him out!!”
Loud shouting echoed near the school gate.
We all exchanged glances, then quickly hid behind a row of street trees to check it out.
A group of seven or eight guys and girls in casual clothes had gathered in front of the gate.
Meanwhile, students trying to come into school were backing away nervously,
Forming a hesitant crowd just outside.
“No outsiders allowed on school grounds.”
“But we’re friends with the Whoa-Whoa Dude!”
“Yeah, that’s right!”
“Gahahaha!”
Yikes.
They looked rough.
Like, real troublemaker types.
“N-Neya-kun… C-Call the police…”
“No, Vice-Principal. They haven’t trespassed onto school grounds yet, and just shouting isn’t enough to…”
The vice-principal, hiding behind Tsuyoshi-nii, tried giving orders,
But Tsuyoshi-nii calmly rejected it.
Right now, he was standing firm at the school gate, fulfilling his duty as a teacher.
“Come on, Sensei. We’re not here to cause trouble. We just wanna see him, that’s all.”
The one speaking was the biggest guy in the group.
Unlike the others, who were all dressed in casual clothes,
He stood out—wearing an old-fashioned, long student uniform jacket… a “chouran.”
Wait… huh?
“What do we do? Maybe they’re friends of the guys who attacked us on the train…”
“Or maybe they tracked us down from the viral video and came rushing here as crazed fans… Either way, we should probably get out of here. Especially you, Saito—and you too, wimpy prince.”
“Don’t call me wimpy even at a time like this, Rinna-chan! But… yeah, you’re right. Saito, we should just skip school together for today—wait, huh!?”
“S-Saito!? No, not now!”
Ignoring Rei and Rinna’s desperate warnings,
I marched straight toward the guy standing off with Tsuyoshi-nii at the gate.
“What the hell are you doing, making a scene in front of someone else’s high school, dumbass?”
Smack!
A clean, satisfying sound echoed as I lightly slapped the guy in the long coat on the head.
Even though there was a decent crowd there—
The rowdy group, the stuck students who couldn’t enter—
The whole scene fell into sudden, total silence for a moment.
“Muh!? What the hell are you—oh! Saito! Long time no see, man!”
“Quit slapping my back so hard, Eiji. That hurts.”
While I grimaced in pain,
Eiji Araki—the guy in the long coat—grinned like he was having the time of his life.
Seriously…
This guy was just as ridiculously intense as ever.
In every possible way.
“Saito. Are these guys your acquaintances?”
“Tsuyoshi-nii… no, I mean, Mr. Neya. Yeah. Unfortunately, these guys are my classmates from middle school.”
At first, I didn’t recognize them from behind,
Especially since a few had dyed their hair after entering high school.
But the moment I spotted Eiji’s ridiculously old-school appearance,
I immediately realized.
I mean, who else in today’s Reiwa era would still be rocking a Showa-era delinquent look with a long school coat?
Only this guy.
“Kujou-kun, long time no see~!”
“Let me get a selfie with you~! I’m gonna brag about you to all my high school friends, Whoa-Whoa Dude~!”
One after another,
The rest of them noticed me and came swarming over.
“I’m heading to school right now, you know… Wait, more importantly, what about you guys!? It’s a weekday!”
“Today’s a prefectural holiday. No school for us~!”
“Yeah! We were wondering what to do, And then someone said, ‘let’s go surprise Kujou-kun!’ So we caught the first train out here!”
Everyone chimed in at once with their excuses.
Ahh, right. Today was a local prefectural holiday,
And all the public schools back home had the day off.
This was the one day every year when the “Mouse’s Dreamland” got overrun by people from our prefecture.
“Saito…”
“Are you okay?”
Rei and Rinna caught up from behind,
Both calling out to me with worried looks on their faces.
“Yeah. Sorry about this, Rei, Rinna. These guys are—”
“Gotcha, Saito! You let your guard down!”
“Guah!”
Just as I was reassuring them, Eiji slammed a full-on tackle into me.
“Kyaa!”
“S-Saito!?”
A loud thud echoed through the air as our bodies collided,
And Rei and Rinna—who were standing right behind me—squealed in surprise.
Well, obviously.
If a giant dude in a long coat suddenly came charging at you,
Anyone would freak out.
“Hmph… your reaction’s slower than before. City life’s made you soft, huh?”
“Yeah, well, sorry! It’s not like Tokyo has random long-coat delinquents charging at you every day!”
I planted my feet, shifted my weight through my core,
And shoved Eiji back with everything I had.
Even so, he only staggered a few steps.
Man… he’d definitely gotten even bigger since we graduated middle school.
“Couldn’t you at least say hi like a normal person?”
“This is how we say hi. Smashing into each other full-force—that’s how best friends communicate.”
I grumbled as I fixed my messed-up uniform,
But Eiji just stood there looking completely unfazed.
“Who’s your best friend? I was just the class rep stuck dealing with your nonsense.”
“Fuh… those were good times. Crashing into each other, forging our bond with every hit.”
“Stop saying stuff that’ll totally get us misunderstood!”
Man…
Talking with Eiji was still as hopeless as ever.
“But still, that shove just now—your power’s definitely leveled up. You’ve kept up your training, huh, Saito? That makes me happy.”
“Yeah, well, the whole reason I even started working out in the first place was because I needed enough strength to physically stop you. So I guess… I should at least thank you for introducing me to the wonderful world of weight training.”
Back when I had to move in with my grandma,
The middle school I transferred to was basically a den of Showa-era delinquents.
At first, I just wanted to lay low and survive without standing out.
But for some reason, I got nominated as class rep right after transferring—and couldn’t turn it down.
Thanks to that, I ended up having to babysit these Yankee idiots day in and day out.
In the beginning, I was honestly scared out of my mind.
That’s why I started training—to give myself enough presence so they’d at least listen to me.
Muscles gave me confidence.
They became my silent, loyal comrades who supported me through it all.
“Fuuuuh! Fshuuuu! Class Rep × Delinquent… Saito-dono really does have the talent for that genre… Oh no, I’m getting a nosebleed.”
“Here, Nakajou-san. Tissue.”
Without meeting Nakajou-san’s eyes—who was somehow already nearby, nosebleeding from excitement—I silently handed her a pocket tissue from the side.
“Whoa~! So this is the kid from that viral video!”
“It’s true, huh? Not a prince, but actually a girl!”
“The one next to her is super cute too. Man, the level’s crazy high!”
“They’re so cuteee! I guess city girls really are on another level.”
“Can we take pictures with you?”
“Um…”
“Uh…”
Before we knew it,
Rei and Rinna found themselves surrounded by a bunch of country delinquents they weren’t used to seeing,
Clearly overwhelmed.
Well, yeah.
Both of them were proper young ladies.
They’d probably never interacted with old-school, rural Yankee types like this before.
“You guys look rough enough already, so don’t crowd them too much.”
I shielded the girls and waved the others away like shooing off a bunch of pests.
Maybe feeling anxious,
Both Rei and Rinna hurriedly half-hid behind my back.
“Sorry about this. These are just people from my hometown. They look rough, but they’re not the type to randomly start swinging fists or anything.”
“Really…?”
Still looking uneasy, Rei pinched the hem of my school jacket.
Just like a lost child clinging to an adult for safety.
Especially Rei—
Considering she’d just recently been attacked by a thug,
It was no wonder she felt even more on edge.
“Come on, just one picture!”
“Let us record a video of you saying ‘Whoa-Whoa Dude~’!”
“Let’s take one together! With the prince and princesses too!”
“For the last time—I’m heading to school right now!!”
None of these guys ever listen, seriously…
Even I wasn’t crazy enough to turn on my heel and ditch school right in front of Tsuyoshi-nii and the vice-principal.
“If you won’t take a picture, we’re telling Lovely-chan!”
“Yeah, that’s right! We’ll report you to the New Generation Boss!”
“Why is Airi’s name coming up now? Wait… where is she anyway?”
“I called her too, but she said she’s studying this year because it’s her exam season.”
Airi—Eiji’s little sister who’s just one year younger than him—
Used to always tag along with this crowd.
But today, she wasn’t here.
“Ahh, I see. Even though she’s a gang boss, she’s surprisingly serious about stuff like that.”
I mean, this girl was named “Lovely” and ran around being a badass school boss,
Yet she also cared about her studies.
Seriously, she was a mystery.
“Hey… Saito. Who’s Airi? The name sounds like a girl’s…”
“Huh?”
Just a second ago, Rei had been trembling like a scared little animal,
And now she was suddenly radiating a pitch-black dark aura—the Dark Prince was back.
The pressure from her was so intense,
Even the hometown Yankee gang instinctively backed away a step.
“Airi’s Eiji’s little sister. She’s a total brocon who adores her big brother, and from what I heard, she’s now the new boss of the middle school.”
“I see… so you left behind a younger girl back home, huh…”
“Come on, Rinna, not you too…”
Stop making it sound like I abandoned some poor girl back in my hometown!
Just being seen by my high school classmates hanging out with a bunch of rough-looking delinquents was already tanking my reputation enough.
I had to clear this up.
“You’ve got it all wrong. Eiji’s little sister, Airi, was the most rebellious kid I ever had to deal with. She couldn’t stand that her big brother was getting along with me—the ‘goody-two-shoes’ class rep—and kept picking fights because of it.”
“…Picking fights how?”
“Like, whenever I was hanging out with Eiji, she’d wedge herself right between us. Even during lunch—despite being in a different grade—she’d come barging into our classroom. If I was tutoring Eiji, she’d plop herself down at the same table. Basically, any time Eiji and I were together, she’d cling to us like glue.”
“…………”
“…………”
“See? So it’s not the kind of relationship you two are imagining.”
After hearing my explanation, both Rei and Rinna fell silent.
Alright! This silence must mean they understood.
“I’m honestly glad Airi didn’t come today… As much as she’s my little sister, she would’ve had a really rough time here…”
Just as I was feeling relieved,
Eiji shot me a pained, sour look,
Like he’d just bitten into a lemon.
“Poor Lovely-chan, seriously.”
“Kujou-kun, I honestly think you need to get kicked by a horse at least once.”
For some reason,
All my old middle school classmates started ganging up on me too,
Each one throwing some jab.
“Why is everyone working so hard to destroy my reputation!?”
And just like that,
A completely baseless rumor about me “abandoning a younger girl back home”
Would soon start spreading around my high school.

Right before posting,
I found a typo where “Rei” had been accidentally typed as “Reiwa” and froze in horror.
That’s the kind of mistake even proofreading can easily miss—
Gotta stay sharp.
