Chapter 12: Wait, You Were a Girl This Whole Time!?
“Hey! Saito, where the heck are you!? It’s morning and you’re not here!?”
“Good morning, Rinna. I was just about to call you, actually. I’ll be skipping the ride today.”
I’d just arrived at the station closest to Rei’s apartment when Rinna’s barrage of calls came in.
And it was way earlier than the time she usually comes to pick me up.
Good thing I left the house early, just in case.
Rinna has scary-good instincts sometimes.
“Answer the question! Where are you right now!?”
“Uh, well… that’s…”
“…You’re at Rei-kun’s place, aren’t you?”
“Y-Yeah. You got me.”
Before I could even get the words out, Rinna hit the bullseye.
Man, her intuition really is something else…
Based on how she acted yesterday, I figured she’d definitely object if I told her I was going to walk to school with Rei.
So instead of telling her, I just hit her with a last-minute cancellation.
“Saito, that boy is—”
“Ah—sorry! Subway tunnel! No signal! I’ll call you later!”
“You’re on a VoIP call! Subway signal issues aren’t even a thing anymore! Don’t you dare hang u—”
(Click. Beeeep…)
I forcefully ended the call and turned off my phone,
Then stepped into the now-familiar entrance of Rei’s apartment complex.
“My name’s Kujou. I’m here to see Rei Hoshina.”
“We’ve been informed. Please wait just a moment.”
Calling Rei down through the front desk concierge had started to feel kind of routine now.
I stood in the entrance lobby, fidgeting and waiting for a few minutes.
“Good morning. Sorry to keep you waiting, Saito.”
“Oh, hey, good morni—”
The moment Rei appeared at the entrance,
I nearly dropped my phone from sheer shock.
“What do you think? Do I look cute?”
Wearing a schoolgirl uniform—with a skirt—Rei smiled bashfully,
Lightly pinching the hem of the skirt with delicate fingers.
That’s right.
A skirt.
A skirt!?
“Uhh… I-I mean… yeah… it suits you… I guess…”
…Wait.
…Wait, wait, wait.
I got a full eight hours of sleep last night.
My head was clear.
My brain, untouched by school fatigue, was in peak thinking condition.
And after processing this unexpected sight with 100% brain power,
The conclusion I reached was:
“You-you’re… disguising yourself as a girl to avoid being recognized!?”
Yeah…
Even I didn’t sound convinced saying that.
“Huh? Disguising?”
No way…
That couldn’t be it, right?
Right!?
And yet, caught in the whirlwind of confusion,
The only half-baked theory I could offer was—
“so that no one recognizes you as the boy from the video…?”
But yeah…
The fact that I wasn’t confident in that disguise theory was obvious from how weak my voice sounded.
Deep down, I already knew.
There was a much simpler, way more obvious answer I’d been avoiding without even realizing it.
And now, that conclusion was taking over my brain.
“Hey, Rei… are you… a girl?”
“Yup.”
“Wait—since when!?“
Yeah… that was a dumb question, even by my standards.
“Since I popped out with a big ol’ ‘waaah!’—like, since birth.”
“I… see…”
What the hell!?
All my past behavior started replaying in my head like a montage of regret.
And all the little things Rei had done that never quite made sense were finally clicking together—
Like stars forming a constellation.
“Hehe… You totally thought I was a boy this whole time, didn’t you, Saito?”
“T-That’s because…”
“And calling it a disguise? That’s just mean, you know. I mean, I know this kind of outfit doesn’t really suit me, but still.”
“No—it’s the opposite. It suited you so well my brain just short-circuited.”
Now that I thought about it,
Rei always had her hoodie pulled up, hiding her hair.
But the truth was, that semi-long hair reached all the way to her shoulders.
The black mask she’d worn to cover the bruise was gone now,
Letting her elegant features shine in full force—and yeah, the effect was devastating.
Instead of her usual visual-kei guy vibe,
She was now rocking a stylish school uniform with a loosened blazer and subtle piercings—
A cool, fashionable girl through and through.
My brain was totally failing to process all this.
“Oooh~ So you got all flustered when you found out I’m actually a super cute girl, huh, Saito?”
“Ugh… W-Well, yeah, of course I was surprised.”
I gave a vague answer, mostly because it irritated me to admit I totally fell into Rei’s little trap—
Especially with that smug grin on her face.
“It’s been a while since I’ve worn the skirt version of the uniform, so it feels kinda drafty down by my legs. That’s why I’m wearing tights, even though it’s a little warm.”
“I-I see… So you usually wear the pants version to school?”
“Yup. The girls at school seem to like it when I dress that way.”
“Ahh, right. You go to Eio Girls’ High—That famous rich-girl school.”
Eio Girls’ High was a prestigious all-girls private academy on the same train line as our school.
Now that I thought about it, the girls who rushed over to help when Rei got attacked on the train were wearing the same uniform.
“Yeah. Even though it’s a pretty traditional school, they’ve started including more modern policies lately—like offering pants as part of the uniform. Most girls still go with the traditional skirts since that’s what drew them to the school in the first place, though.”
“Yeah, I can imagine how your look would really stand out in a place like that.”
“Exactly.”
“So… why’d you choose to dress like a guy then?”
“Well… it’s kind of a long story…”
Just moments ago, Rei had that mischievous grin—like a kid who pulled off the perfect prank.
But now, a shadow quickly passed over her face.
Crap.
Did I touch on something sensitive?
I mean, it’s only been a few days since we met.
Maybe that was a boundary I wasn’t supposed to cross yet.
Not that I have any room to talk—
I’ve been playing a version of myself that’s practically built on lies.
“A-Ah, I see…But hey, I’m actually kinda glad—glad that you’re a girl, Rei.”
“Glad?”
“Yeah. When we were hanging out, there were times when you’d do something and I’d suddenly get flustered, you know? I’d be like, ‘Wait, why am I getting nervous around another guy?’ It really messed with my head for a bit.”
Trying to shift the mood,
I decided to play the clown and go for a laugh.
And in moments like this, nothing works better than throwing your own embarrassment under the bus.
“Eh!? No way~ So even when I was dressed like that, you were noticing me~?”
“I seriously started wondering if pretty boys were my type or something. I even went and asked for expert advice.”
For the record, the so-called “expert” was none other than Nakajou-san.
I asked her,
‘Is it normal to feel your heart race around someone of the same gender?’
She immediately shot a nosebleed and collapsed.
So yeah… not much of a consultation in the end.
“I see… Even that version of me is still me, so hearing that really makes me happy.”
“Hey—your face is way too close! Back up a little!”
“Huh? This is normal distance between friends, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, guy friends don’t get all clingy like this!”
“Too bad~ I’m a girl, after all?”
I tried to shake off Rei’s arm as she wrapped it around mine,
But she had a surprisingly strong grip and clearly wasn’t planning on letting go.
Ugh…
She smells really nice.
Now that I think about it—
All those times I thought she smelled good…
Maybe it was just because she always stood way too close?
“Still, just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean I’m automatically okay with this!”
“But the train still makes me nervous… Ahhh! I’m so scared! My heart’s racing out of control~!”
“You’re shouting that with way too much energy. Pretty sure you’re fine.”
“I’m not fine! And you said yesterday it was natural to help a friend out, didn’t you?”
Ugh…
She remembered that too well.
Still, I couldn’t deny that she really was scared of taking the train.
So in the end, I gave up on shaking her off and walked with her toward the station—arm in arm the whole way.
