Chapter 35: Feeling Like a Dad
“Ah, what should I do today?”
‘m lounging around at the inn, pondering what to do today. I have some money from Alice and the others, so I don’t really need to take on any quests for a while.
“Glenn!! Could you come down for a bit?”
“Huh? Is that Gordon’s voice?”
While I’m thinking about what to do, I hear Gordon’s voice from downstairs. He seems a bit rushed.
I quickly change my clothes and head down to the first floor.
“What’s up?”
“There’s someone here to see you.”
“Me?”
Then Gordon points towards the entrance. Isn’t the person going to come in? Who could it be? Nine and others? No, they’re working today.
When I step outside, there’s a little girl waiting.
“I came because we had a promise.”
“Ah, I see. That’s right.”
The girl, Liz, has long, light red hair and sleepy eyes. I mean, we did promise, but it’s only been a day or so, hasn’t it?
Liz… were you that eager?
“We did make a promise, but… isn’t this a bit soon?”
“No… it’s not.”
“Well, okay then.”
We go back to the inn to grab some things, and then Liz and I set out. If we’re going to make food, I want it to be in a nicer place. Hmm, where should we go? I ponder this as we walk.
“Is it okay if we walk a bit?”
“Yeah, that’s fine.”
I decide where I want to go, and Liz agrees, so we start walking.
“…Hey, Glenn.”
“Hm? What is it?”
“Did you go out with Stella in town yesterday?”
“Ah, well, we just lay down together on a hill.”
“Hmm.”
I wonder why, but it seems like Liz’s mood has turned sour. Why? Did I do something wrong?
“Hey, are you upset by any chance?”
“…Not really.”
No, she definitely is. It’s pretty obvious. She’s sulking… can’t help it.
“I’ll make today’s meal extra special for you.”
“Really?”
Hearing that I’ll make something special, her sulky expression vanishes. It’s almost too simple, but I’m thankful for it now.
“But, what about the others? Should we invite them?”
“It would be nice if everyone could join.”
“Then, go ahead and call them.”
I was about to leave to prepare, but Liz grabbed my shirt from behind.
“Can we go call them together?”
“No, I was thinking of going ahead to start setting up and all.”
“Is that a problem?”
I haven’t seen Liz look up at me like that in a while. Since that time in town, right? It’s nice to be needed, but… well, I think it’s better if I get started on the preparations.
“It’s not that it’s a problem, but you know, it’s a bit of a hassle?”
“But…”
“Okay, I got it. Let’s go call them together.”
“Mm… thank you.”
I decided to give in. Well, when you see such a small child looking sad, you can’t help but feel like you have to do something. It kind of makes me feel like a dad.
I wonder if I’d do things like this with my own kids if I ever got married. I try to imagine myself married… but I can’t picture it.
“Just wait a bit.”
“Okay.”
We headed to the inn where Alice and the others were staying. Liz went to call them, and soon everyone came down.
I didn’t feel like entering such a big inn, so I waited at the entrance.
“Everyone, Glenn is going to cook for us.”
“Really? That’s great!”
“Thank you so much. We’ll make sure to thank you properly.”
“No need to worry about that.”
I’ve received enough thanks; if I keep accepting more, I feel like I might turn into a bad person.
“Stella, it’s been since yesterday.”
“Yeah, thanks again for today.”
“It’s no trouble at all.”
Then we walked to our destination, avoiding a spot where we might run into that troublesome trio.
“We’re here. Shall we eat here?”
“Wow, I didn’t know about this place.”
We decided to eat near a river on the outskirts of town. Stella seemed impressed. It’s a good spot where I sometimes go fishing upstream on my days off.
It’s relaxing, and the river is so clear, it’s really soothing.
“…It’s beautiful.”
“Really beautiful.”
“Yes, the water is so clear.”
The three of them were gazing at the river, each commenting on its clarity. Everyone was amazed at how transparent the river was. It’s a great indicator of the rich nature here.
I felt a bit proud that they praised this river.
“Alright, shall we start getting ready?”
“Is there anything I can help with?”
“Well, could you keep an eye on this for me?”
I pulled out some pre-washed rice from my magic bag and handed it to Carla.
“Just watch this, right?”
“Exactly. I’ll set it on this net over some firewood below. When it starts bubbling, let me know.”
“Got it.”
With that, I pulled out some cooking utensils from my familiar magic bag and started cooking.
