Chapter 33: Confusion
“Sorry, that took a while.”
“No, it’s totally fine.”
“Really? That’s good then.”
I pulled a brand-new futon out of my magic bag and handed it to Stella. It was unused, so it shouldn’t have any smell.
“Here, the futon I promised.”
“Thank you. Then, here’s the money for the futon.”
After I handed over the futon, I received the payment. It was another gold coin. Do these people only carry gold coins?
“No, you can just give me silver coins. It’s not that expensive.”
“Really? Okay, here you go. Silver coins.”
I returned the gold coin and took the silver coins. Charging a gold coin for just a futon would be a rip-off. Even I felt guilty, so I asked for silver coins instead.
“Now that I’ve delivered the futon, I’m going to wander around the town, so see you around.”
“…Hey.”
“Hmm?”
As I turned to leave, Stella called out to me. She had already put the futon back into her magic bag.
When I turned towards Stella, she looked like she wanted to say something.
“What about this wandering around town, what are you planning to do?”
“Well, I haven’t really decided anything.”
That’s because the people I was supposed to invite ended up kidnapping me, and I spent the time being chased after by them.
“So, um, do you want to go around the town with me?”
“Huh?”
Her unexpected suggestion caught me off guard. It was supposed to be just a simple exchange of a futon, so how did it turn into this?
“Is it… no good?”
When I didn’t say anything, Stella looked sad and her ears drooped. Stop that, it makes me feel like I’m bullying you.
“No, it’s not that it’s no good, but don’t you have any other plans, Stella?”
“I don’t have anything else.”
“Then, shall we go around the town together?”
“Yes!”
Stella smiled, and I could see her snaggletooth. Her tail was wagging a lot too. She kind of reminds me of a pet I have at home. I wonder how they are doing.
I was lost in my thoughts for a moment.
“But really, I haven’t planned anything. Stella, is there anywhere you want to go?”
“Hmm… ah.”
Stella seemed to think for a bit and then seemed to have an idea. I was glad she had a suggestion since I hadn’t planned anything.
“There’s a place I’d like to visit… but it’s a bit of a walk, is that okay?”
“That’s fine.”
“Okay…”
Then the two of us started walking side by side. Where did Stella want to go? I could guess if it were Liz, probably somewhere with food. But I couldn’t guess where Stella might want to go.
“We’re here. This is it.”
“Oh, this place.”
“You knew it?”
We had walked for a while and were now on a hill-like area at the upper part of the town. I’ve been here a few times before. You can see the whole town from here, and the breeze feels nice.
“Well, yeah, I’ve been here a few times.”
“Did you come here alone those times?”
“Yeah, I did.”
I lay down on the grass, feeling the breeze. It’s really comfortable here.
“Maybe I’ll lie down too.”
“Yeah, it feels great to lie down.”
Then Stella and I lay down. We are next to each other but not too close, which is reassuring.
It’s awkward if we’re too close; it would be uncomfortable, and I wouldn’t want her to think I was doing something wrong if we accidentally touched.
“The wind feels nice. Maybe we should just relax here for a bit.”
“Yeah, let’s take it easy for a while.”
The weather is nice today, and a good breeze is blowing. Yawn, I’m starting to feel sleepy. Maybe I’ll just close my eyes and rest for a bit.
“Zzz, zz.”
“…Are you asleep? Hey.”
Glenn doesn’t respond to Stella’s call. It seems like he’s completely fallen asleep.
“Zzz, zz.”
“…”
Stella sits up and looks at Glenn. Then, without realizing it, she reaches out to touch his hair.
“…Eh? What was I… about to do?”
Just before touching his hair, Stella catches herself and reflects on what she was about to do. She seemed confused by her own actions.
“…I guess I’m a bit off today.”
She stares at her hand for a while and then places it on her chest, noticing her heartbeat is faster than usual.
Then the wind blows, rustling Stella’s golden hair.
