Chapter 30: The Beloved Fools
“♪♪”
After returning to the city and parting ways with my friends, I went back to the inn and dived into bed, humming a tune.
I was torn between wanting to quickly cook and eat the giant shrimp I bought and thinking I should save such a delicious treat for another time.
“What should I do?”
I thought about it for a while. I bought a good amount, but it would disappear quickly. Hmm, such a great find should be eaten at the right place! So, I decided to save it for my next day off.
“Well, no quests today. I just got back anyway.”
Today, I’m going to relax. What? You think I’m always relaxing? That’s not true. I’ve worked hard recently, so I deserve a break.
Plus, I’ve got plenty of gold coins now, so I don’t need to take on any new requests for a while.
“Maybe I’ll invite those guys out for a meal.”
I left the inn and strolled leisurely through the town. Then, suddenly,
“Now!!”
“Hey!!”
“…”
Yes, I got kidnapped. They even blindfolded me and took me away politely.
“So, criminal Glenn. Do you know why you’ve been brought here?”
“No clue.”
I honestly told the man in front of me that I had no idea why. Now, my blindfold is off, but my hands are lightly tied, and I’m in a dim room lit by a few candles, feeling like I’m held captive.
And this room belongs to one of these guys.
It’s really something to own a house, huh. I’m quite envious.
“Hey, I really didn’t do anything! I don’t remember doing anything wrong.”
In front of me, at a long table, three guys were leaning on their elbows, sitting in chairs. These were the same three I had just thought of inviting to dinner. They were the ones who kidnapped me.
This is just too sad for me; I feel like crying.
“You don’t remember, huh? Well, Galt, please state the criminal’s offenses.”
“Ha! This man, despite having someone named Rena, outrageously went on a quest with the Moon’s Droplets party!”
The one leading this mock trial is Nine, who has slightly long, brown hair and wears glasses. And then there’s Galt, a beastman reading out my so-called charges with a salute. He looks tough and is well-built, but he’s actually easy-going and fun to be around.
Wait, how do they even know about that? I didn’t tell anyone… right? I didn’t, did I?
“So, criminal Glenn, can you still say you are innocent?”
“Well, it’s like, you know… it just happened naturally, it was just the way things turned out.”
“Is that so… You said something similar about the last incident involving Rena, didn’t you?”
“Did I? I guess so?”
But all I do is occasionally take Rena out for fun. And here I am, captured again. I don’t understand why.
“So, Gelato, what do you think we should do with him?”
Nine asked the opinion of Gelato, a friendly guy with curly, blonde hair who seemed quite gentle. These three are my friends of the same age, famously known as the ‘Three Fools.’
They are usually nice guys, but they’re so unlucky in love that their actions can be a bit off at times.
And for some reason, they often take their frustrations out on me. Even when I haven’t done anything wrong, it doesn’t make sense. Life is truly unreasonable and troublesome.
“…heh.”
Then, Gelato smiled at me. Ah, I know him well. He’s a good friend and cares a lot about his buddies.
He must be about to prove my innocence.
“Yeah, let’s execute him.”
“Eh?”
That’s right. His head was as loose as his curly hairstyle. Looking to him for help was pointless.
“Alright, let’s get the execution over with then.”
The three of them stood up from their chairs and started moving towards me. This is bad! I need to think of something fast!!
“Wait! Listen to me!”
“What? If it’s time for your last words, we’ll get to that later.”
“No, actually, here’s the thing…”
I racked my brain for a solution and managed to come up with one, putting on a serious face.
“”…Gulp!””
The Three Fools swallowed their saliva and listened seriously as I looked at them intently with a grave expression.
“I mentioned Galt and Gelato to everyone at Moon’s Droplets, and they said they’d like to talk to you guys sometime.”
“…The verdict for criminal Glenn… not guilty!!”
“Hey! Wait, Glenn! What about me?”
And just like that, I was declared not guilty. There’s one guy with brown hair and glasses still making a fuss, but I’m ignoring him.
“Hey-hey, Nine, jealousy doesn’t look good on anyone!”
“Yeah, maybe it’s because of our looks that they chose us?”
The two of them were thrilled by my words, while one was completely disheartened. To be honest, these guys aren’t exactly handsome. They’re just average.
Meanwhile, I untied myself during the commotion and walked over to an open window, turning back to the Three Fools.
“Wow! Looks like we’re finally going to get girlfriends!”
“Haha, just kidding, that was a lie.”
“…What?”
The three of them froze, looking at me. Galt and Gelato’s happy faces quickly disappeared.
“Well, that’s that. …Later!”
With that final twist, I escaped through the window and ran off as fast as I could. Having been restrained here many times, I knew the place pretty well.
“…get him.”
“Haha! See ya, you fools!”
“…Kill that guy!!”
“Bwahaha! Just as I thought! Like you guys would ever get girlfriends!”
The two chased after me, and Nine was laughing even harder behind them. And so, another chase with the Three Fools began.
My latest escape adventure had just started.
