Chapter 29: Returning to Town
“Great, I made some good purchases today.”
I left the market with a pleased expression. I had finished reporting on the quest and spent some time shopping there.
And yes, that old man really was the village chief.
“Well, shopping’s done; all that’s left is to head home.”
I started to get ready to leave. That’s when I remembered the white mask. Seriously, that thing is creepy. My sister’s taste is something most people just can’t understand.
That mask was a gift from my sister when I was leaving the village. At first, I wondered if it was some kind of prank. But seeing her face, I realized it wasn’t.
(Ah, she didn’t give this to me as a joke.)
That mask is definitely not to my taste. It was the only thing I could use to cover my face when I had helped those people.
“Speaking of which, she’s almost an adult now.”
In this world, you’re considered an adult at 15. I wonder what my sister will do. Will she stay in our village, or will she move to a city like me?
Given her personality, she’ll probably stay. Maybe I’ll see her again when I visit the village.
“Hey, Glenn, have you finished your quest report?”
“Alice, yeah, that’s done. Now we just need to head back.”
While I was lost in thought, Alice came up to talk to me. I’ve bought everything I wanted and have no more errands here, so now it’s really just time to go back.
“Yeah, this quest had some unexpected turns, but I’m glad we made it through safely.”
“Right, all’s well that ends well.”
“Fufu, what’s that? You’re always fun to be around, Glenn.”
Alice laughed a bit at my words. For a moment, she had the smile of a girl her age, not the princely air she usually carries. I thought to myself that she can be pretty cute.
“Shall we head back?”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
Then we joined Alice’s party members and got on the carriage.
“Glenn, you look happy.”
“Oh? You can tell?”
Liz pointed it out. It seems my feelings were showing on my face, but I think it’s justified this time. It happened while I was shopping at the market.
“Actually, I found my favorite food being sold in a huge size!”
I pulled out a giant shrimp and showed it to Liz.
“This is your favorite, Glenn?”
“Yes! Imagine this shrimp fried and served hot, eaten with salt or dipping sauce. It’s incredibly tasty.”
“…gulp.”
Liz looked like she really wanted to try it as she listened to me explain. I felt my mouth watering just thinking about it.
“Don’t make that face; I’ll make some for you if we can find the time.”
“Really? …Can you promise?”
“Yeah, it’s a promise.”
Liz leaned in close with an intense look. Seriously, too close! Her light red hair was almost brushing against me. Seriously, this girl has no sense of personal space.
“Hey, Glenn, where do you usually stay?”
“Uh? I usually stay at the Silver Cat inn, but why do you ask?”
“Because even if I’m free, it doesn’t help if I don’t know where you are.”
“…I see.”
But just so you know, I’m not always at the inn. I go out for quests and other stuff, you know?
“Also, do you want a house, Glenn?”
“A house? Well, yeah, I guess I’d like one.”
“…I see.”
“??”
What’s that about? I don’t understand the point of her questions. Why is she suddenly asking about a house? I was puzzled by the sudden strange question.
“Well, if our schedules match up again… I’ll cook for you then.”
“That’s fine.”
What does she mean, ‘that’s fine’? Wait, what’s with that peace sign? What does it mean? It’s kind of scary.
“Glenn, about what we were talking about before.”
“Before? …Oh, the futon.”
As we were talking, Stella came up to us. She was referring to a futon. We had promised to pass one along before.
“I remember. I’ll give you the spare one when we get back to town.”
“Thanks. Sorry for asking you for so many favors?”
“No problem.”
I’m used to it because of my sister. Being a big brother means getting used to indulging a demanding little sister.
Well, I don’t know about other families though.
“By the way, Glenn, is it true that you mentioned before you can’t use high-level magic?”
“Well, I can handle intermediate-level magic to some extent, but I don’t have enough magic power for high-level spells.”
“I see. How about I teach you some magic that doesn’t use much magic power?”
“Really? I’d like to learn that.”
Having more skills and knowledge is never a problem. I’d definitely like to learn if you’re willing to teach.
“Then, I’ll contact you when I’m free again.”
“I’ll count on it then.”
After that, we spent a night in a tent and went back to town. Sometimes, even a noisy quest isn’t so bad, I thought as we traveled.
