[1] Test footnote
Hi, Monica here. I’m an elf, a demihuman. In the past, there would have been a lot of problems, but now, I wouldn’t be persecuted or discriminated against. I grew up and lived my whole life in an elven village.
I have an aptitude for alchemy, which was rare in my village. Elves, or rather demihumans in general, have a low aptitude for alchemy, but I was special because I was able to use it, especially from an early age.
“… Monica, I’ll give you this book.”
“What’s this book for, Dad?”
“It’s a book on alchemy. Read and study it if, that is, you want to get better at alchemy.”
“Yes!”
People thought that alchemy was only meant for humans and shouldn’t be used by elves, but my father understood. He thought that, since I had a talent for alchemy, I should develop such talent.
Once I got older, I understood that elves were conservative. They didn’t want changes, so I was the odd one out. I was even called a cursed child. Nevertheless, my parents raised me well and upright.
After turning 18, I took the opportunity to start living on my own. In the near future, I planned to attend Canovaria Alchemy Academy and for that reason, I wanted to get used to living by myself.
I didn’t know if I was good at alchemy since there was no one to compare to in the village. Yet, my mind was trapped in this weird phenomenon called alchemy. As it was written in the book I read, ‘An alchemist must search for their own truth.’ I still remembered those words and I’ve tried being like that. I don’t know what my ‘truth’ is, but I wanted to find it. I wanted to pursue alchemy.
The turning point for me came about a year ago. I had heard that the Kingdom of Canovaria had given birth to the second Blue Stellar Alchemy. His name was Elweed Willis and he was 15 years old at the time. I couldn’t believe it and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I understood how grandeur a Blue Stellar Alchemist was.
Then, one day, I stumbled upon a copy of his paper.
“What is this…? Unbelievable…”
‘A theory of casting alchemy without alchemy formations based on elemental theory.’
The genius Blue Stellar Alchemist changed the history of alchemy. The books said that for alchemy, formations and magic power were essential, and they hadn’t changed for centuries. It was a universal truth and yet, what was written here overturned it. I was so absorbed in the paper that I forgot to eat or sleep.
A year later.
I didn’t know if it was thanks to effort or talent, but I was able to use alchemy without a formation. I wasn’t good at it, but his theory was right.
“Kyaaaahhh!!! A Giant Spider appeared!”
With a distressed voice, the elven village fell into chaos. No one had the strength to defeat a B-class demon, but I thought that I could do it. I wanted to see how far alchemy would take me and I was able to defeat it easily. I started by freezing its feet, stopping it from moving and threw an ice pillar on its head. After that, I incinerated its body with flames.
“Monica, you’ve grown so much…”
“I’ve gotten skilled at alchemy, Dad.”
“Aah. You are a hero for saving the village! I knew you had a great talent!”
The praise got the better of me. I went to single-handedly deal with the Giant Spiders that were overflowing outside from the labyrinth.
“Haa… haa… haa…”
I was so exhausted that I was breathing with my hands on my knees. During the past few days, there were so many Giant Spiders that I couldn’t handle them all. And then, father told me.
“Monica, alchemists from the Kingdom will be here soon. You just have to hold out until then…”
“Yes…”
Who knew that I would meet the person I’ve always wanted to meet?
“… Um, who are you?”
“We were referred to you by the village chief. Are you Monica?”
“Ah! You’re the alchemists my father mentioned! Please, come in…”
“ “Excuse us.” ”
There was a knock on the door and when I answered, two people were standing there. I forced my father to have the alchemists stay at my house. I wanted to know about the Kingdom’s cutting-edge alchemy.
In front of me stood a man with long platinum hair and a woman with long blonde hair. Both were well-dressed and I wondered if this was what a proper alchemist looked like.
Then, the man performed some repairs to my house, but there was no alchemy formation.
‘Huh? Was it common to cast alchemy without an alchemy formation? But it had only been a year since that paper came out… He can’t be… No way… This guy…’
“Eh? Is it finished?”
“Yes, please check it out.”
“It really is fixed. But the alchemy formation…?”
“Fii and I can cast alchemy without it.”
“… A-are you Elweed Willis?” I asked, trying to control my thumping heart.
And then…
“That’s right. I’m Elweed Willis, and this is Alsphira Medis.”
“Nice to meet you~”
“Eeehhh!? A-aren’t you both very famous!? For such people come to this village… Awawa~”
Elweed Willis and Alsphira Medis. The two of them were very famous in the alchemy industry. Even in this remote elven village, their names were known.
A Blue Stellar and a Platinum class alchemist. Both are of the highest rank. I’ve never imagined that such people would come to help the village.
I was afraid to present food I cooked using crops that I grew myself to such celebrities. ‘I hope they like it…’ I was thinking when I received an unexpected response.
“It’s… It’s delicious, Monica! Who made this…?”
“Ah, I prepared it myself. I hope it was to your liking, and just Monica is fine. Can I call you Elle-san and Fii-san?”
“O-of course! But more importantly…”
From then on, they kept asking me about how I grew crops and what fertilizers I was using.
Fii-san then said, “I’m going to bed. Take care of that crop idiot,” and went to bed.
‘Elweed Willis is a farmer.’ Everyone has heard such rumours. I thought it was just a rumour caused by jealousy that was being spread because he was so talented. However, as far as I could tell, Elle was very knowledgeable about crops. So, I decided to ask him about it.
“I have a question Elle-san… Are you a farmer?”
“Oh, yes. I’m of farmer’s blood.”
“… To think that the rumours are true.”
“What, the rumours about me have even reached this elven village? Aah, a lot of people don’t believe me, but I’m a true farmer. I always have been and always will be. In fact, I dreamt of being one…” Elle-san told me with shining eyes. He explained how wonderful crops were and how alchemy could be very useful in improving them. That becoming an alchemist for the Blue Stellar Class was just an extra. He also said that he’ll eventually become one pursuing agricultural research. A genius is a genius after all, but he was friendly and nice.
Until now, I had subconsciously thought that he was like a god of alchemy, but I was relieved when I realized that he was like an innocent boy, just two years younger than me.
“Come to think of it, did Monica ever study alchemy under anyone? You said you could use it.”
“No, I’m self-taught. I studied using this book.”
When I took out a book from the bookshelf behind me, Elle gave me a surprised look.
“This is a very old book… I’m amazed that I could find something like this in this village.”
“Is it obsolete?”
“Yeah. The academy uses a more updated version.”
“Hmm, really? I see.”
Starting from that conversation, I asked him many questions about the Kingdom and its alchemy. Elle-san answered all my questions without being disgruntled.
And thus was my first encounter with Elweed Willis, who would later become my mentor.
