The document that Cecily gave me was a request for an investigation I had never done before.

A strange monster was said to be wandering in the forest on the edge of town. It gave off a very evil presence. It was so dangerous that normal people and low-rank adventurers couldn’t even get close. They would get scared and run away.

“An investigation? I would normally refuse for sure.”

But after days of those naked apology punishments, my body was now filled to the brim with a strange kind of energy.

For some reason, I felt oddly bold, like I wasn’t afraid of anything.

“Hmph. An evil presence? There is nothing more evil than me, a former Demon King!”

Mako-san snorted proudly inside my head.

I rushed out, as if escaping from that nest of weirdos, and headed straight for the place I was supposed to investigate.

Leaving the town behind, I stepped deep into the thick forest.

The further I went, the heavier the air became. The birds stopped singing, and an eerie silence slowly took over the forest.

“…It’s here, Alphonse.”

Mako-san’s voice suddenly turned serious.

The air shook like it was stabbing my skin. The bushes in front of me rustled loudly.

Thud! The ground trembled as a huge shape slowly appeared, covered in a dark aura.

The pressure was overwhelming. Cold sweat soaked my whole body.

“I thought I could handle it, but I really want to go home!”

The strange confidence I had just a moment ago disappeared instantly. I turned around right away and was ready to run for my life.
