Chapter 15: Liam, Unscathed and Oblivious
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Immediately after I stepped in between them, a large cloud of smoke enveloped the whole area as the aftermath of their clashing attack. Amidst the smoke, I could hear footsteps drawing closer to me.
“Wait-?! Liam-kun! Are you okay?!”
“Liam-san! Are you hurt?!”
“Aaah! Geez! The smoke is so annoying!”
The red-haired elf said and suddenly, the smoke that had enveloped the area disappeared in an instant. I could finally see them again. Lydia-san and the red-haired elf, who had been rushing over to me with worried expressions on their faces, suddenly stopped dead in their tracks.
“Ho-How come you’re unscathed?! Liam-san, didn’t you just take on both of our attacks at the same time?!”
“Ah, yes! That’s right! Well, of course I cast a defensive barrier around me first, but more importantly! I’m still fine thanks to both of you for noticing my arrival and reducing your strength at the very last moment!”
“Reducing my strength… While I certainly noticed your arrival and reduced my attack power immediately, but for you to remain unscathed even after taking on those two attacks at the same time… Just as I thought. Liam-san, you’re—”
Lydia-san was saying something, but the red-haired elf woman immediately cut her off. Either because the red-haired elf didn’t hear her or she just didn’t care about Lydia-san at all. The red-haired quickly closed the distance between us and peered into my eyes as she said.
“As expected of Liam-kun! Even though I also weakened my attack power at the very last moment, but for you to remain unscathed after receiving that spell is still impressive!”
“Tha-That’s not true…! I-It’s all thanks to you two! Both of you have exceptional control in your magic after all! That’s why you could mitigate the power in an instant.”
When I said that, the red-haired elf leaned forward to match her height to my eye level and said again.
“No, it’s not just that… I’ll tell you what. I’d like to give you a reward for your impressive feat, Liam-kun.”
“A..A reward?”
I asked and the red-haired elf nodded excitedly in response, causing her voluptuous chest to bounce a bit. She then whispered in a cloyingly sweet tone.
“Yes, a reward… I’m willing to give you anything in my power, but… Tell me, Liam-kun, what would you like me to do for you?”
I tried to avert my gaze from the red-haired elf’s eyes only for my eyes to land on her ample chest. Her already big chest seemed to get emphasized even more because she was leaning forward to me, which left me feeling very flustered.
“You can ask me anything, you know? For example—”
“Liam-san already has me, so your reward is unnecessary.”
This time, it was Lydia-san’s turn to interrupt the red-haired elf mid-sentence. The two of them clashed again, glaring at each other.
“Come to think of it… I almost forgot because of how amazing Liam-kun is, but we still haven’t settled the score between us, have we?”
“Yes. While being able to witness Liam-san’s impressive strength is always a wonderful sight to behold, but let’s properly settle the score right here and now.”
The impending danger was almost palpable. The two of them seemed ready to pounce at each other again. I quickly said to them.
“Wa-Wait! If you two keep fighting, not just this training ground but even the entire Magic Academy could be destroyed! So, how about we call it a day for now?”
“Indeed… It seems I got too headed from the battle as well. Just like what Liam-san said, it might be best to stop for today.”
Fortunately, they seemed willing to stop fighting for today. But the fact that Lydia-san emphasized the ‘today’ part meant they were planning to have a duel again someday… But that wouldn’t solve anything! Fighting was never the answer! Ah, right!
“How about we all go out for a meal together? You know, to deepen our friendship?!”
“Having a meal together with Liam-kun?! Yes, please! I’m in!~”
“If Liam-san is the one suggesting it, then of course I shall go.”
Thank goodness. Hopefully this could help the two of them get along better. We then left the Magic Academy in order to search for a restaurant to eat at. But then, I was suddenly reminded of the time when I went out to eat with Zayn-san and the others.
I wonder how Zayn-san and the others are doing now…
◆◇◆
After drinking at the tavern until late at night, Zayn and his two companions showed up at the Adventurers’ Guild around noon the next day.
“Alright. Let’s go take an easy quest.”
Zayn said as he walked up to the quest and three women appeared. One of them spoke to him.
“Zayn, could you please pass a message to Liam-kun for me?”
“Huh???”
Zayn cocked his eyebrows, looking a bit irritated, but the woman didn’t even falter. She continued on.
“I actually want to talk with him in person, but he’s not around today… You know, he healed me without charging me anything the other day after I returned from completing a quest, so I—”
“If you’re talking about Liam, then you’re out of luck. We just kicked him from our party yesterday. So I’m afraid I can’t pass your message to him.”
“Huh?!”
Upon hearing Zayn’s statement, the three women immediately went stiff. One of them then exclaimed.
“Yo-You kicked Liam-kun?! But why?!”
“Why? Because he’s in the way. That’s all.”
“But Zayn, you owe all of your party’s success and reputation to Liam-kun…. We all know it’s all Liam-kun’s doing…”
One of the women muttered under her breath in a voice low enough that Zayn couldn’t hear. And then…
“Well, if Liam-kun is not with you then I don’t need you too. bye.”
The woman said coldly before all of them turned around and left Zayn.
“The heck with them?”
“They’re probably just jealous because we’ve been doing really well lately. Just ignore them.”
“Right~”
“You’re right… Well, now that idiot is gone, we can’t just pick a quest at random like we used to, but…”
Zayn said as he scanned the quest board. His gaze then stopped on one particular quest. The corner of his mouth then curled up into an ugly grin.
“Orcs, huh? We always had that idiot fight them most of the time. I don’t know how hard it is to defeat these orcs, but that idiot could take a bunch of orcs in an instant.. That means the three of us should be able to complete this quest if we work together.”
“It’s going to be a piece of cake for us~”
“Easy peasy~”
“Alright. Let’s take this quest. At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before we can become S-rank adventurers.”
And so, Zayn and his two companions burst out laughing. Their laugh echoed throughout the entire Adventurers’ Guild, making the other patrons look at them in disdain.
Little did they know… They would soon be defeated by a single orc. In fact, not just defeated. They almost died from facing a single orc even.
