Chapter 11: Liam Gets His Magic Power Measured
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
My vision was enveloped in a bright light. I couldn’t see anything, but within the next moment, a new scenery unfolded before me. I could see the big tree stretched out before my very eyes. A city made entirely of thriving plants around the tree came into my view.
“A-Amazing…! So this is Magistus…!!”
Everything was made from nature. Houses were made from trees and beautiful flowers blooming everywhere. It made me feel as if I had stepped into a completely different world, even though the Elf Kingdom was still located in this world.
“I’ve heard the rumors of the elf Kingdom, but… This city really lives up to its expectation as the central city of the Elf Kingdom.”
“Yes, I agree…”
After that, I walked around Magistus with Lydia-san. We asked one of the elves for directions. Wondering where was the place where we could learn magic. We discovered that the formal name for that place was the Magic Academy. Once we had obtained that information, everything went smoothly after that. We were able to arrive in front of the Magic Academy. I entered the building together with Lydia-san. Inside, there was a female elf stationed at the counter.
“May I ask what brings the two of you here?”
“We heard we can apply for a short-term magic lesson here. We want to apply for that program.”
“I see. You’re interested in short-term magic lessons, not the regular enrollment, right? In that case, we will need to measure your magic power first with this magic power measuring instrument.”
The female elf took out a crystal ball and explained.
“It’s simple, really. The stronger the magic power you channel into this crystal ball, the brighter it will shine. Conversely, if your magic power is on the weaker side, the crystal will only let out a dim shine.”
“I see… In that case, Liam-san. Please go ahead and have your magic power measured first. I will go after you!”
“Okay, Lydia-san!”
I nodded to Lydia-san before I placed my hand over the crystal ball. Then, I channeled my magic power into it, just like I had done with the teleportation circle earlier. But then…
“…”
The crystal ball didn’t shine at all. It didn’t even emit a faint glow. Seeing this, the female elf coughed, looking a bit awkward.
“Si-Since the crystal ball doesn’t shine at all, I think enrolling in the short-term magic lesson would be a little too difficult for you. B-But! You can still enroll for the regular course though!”
“-?!”
Hearing this, Lydia-san immediately raised her voice. She looked really angry.
“How dare you disrespect the man who has been acknowledged by me, Lydia Astoria? I am a proud knight of the Astoria family and this man has saved my life and he is someone who I have chosen to support!”
“The-The Astoria family? Lydia Astoria?! Y-You must be the S-rank adventurer…?! Bu-But why did someone of your standing come to this humble place…?!”
The female elf looked very surprised at the revelation. Then, in a slightly nervous tone, the female elf continued.
“Ho-However, although I’m aware of how rude I am, but the fact still remains. Even though this gentleman is someone who Astoria-sama has acknowledge, but his aptitude in magic is a bit—”
But before she could finish her words, I stepped in between Lydia-san and the female woman.
“Lydia-san, it’s fine. I’m aware I’m still lacking in many things. That’s precisely the reason why I come to this place. I want to improve my skills.”
“But—”
“Oh, you’re using the crystal ball! Wow~ That crystal ball sure brings back memories.”
A cheerful voice came from behind us, a complete opposite of the calm and quiet ambience in the Magic Academy building. We turned around and there stood the female red-haired elf we had met yesterday.
“You are…”
“-?!”
I was a bit shocked to see someone I recognized, but then Lydia-san took a step ahead of me. She looked a bit cautious for some reason. But then…
“Gr-Great Mage-sama…?!”
“…Huh…? Great Mage-sama…?”
Becoming even more confused, I repeated the female elf’s words again. The red-haired elf was still smiling excitedly. She wasn’t even the least fazed.
“That boy’s magic can’t be measured with a simple magic measurement device. You know, I heard this boy restored the teleportation circle within just one second. Isn’t that right… Cute Human Boy?~”
The red-haired elf said so as she gave me a playful wink. I couldn’t help but be taken aback by the look in her eyes.

Chapter 12: Liam Gets His Head Patted
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“How dare you flirt with Liam-san right before my eyes…! Have some shame! You insolent one!!”
“Why are you so angry all of a sudden?~ I just said that if you’re going to measure Liam-kun’s magic, you will need a proper tool, not that… Cheap things. That thing can’t detect Liam-kun’s magic properly~”
“How dare a frivolous person like you utter Liam-san’s name—”
Lydia-san took another step forward and grabbed the hilt of her sword. Seeing that, I quickly tried to calm Lydia-san.
“Ly-Lydia-san! Judging from that female elf’s reaction, this red-haired elf must be the S-rank mage that we had heard of before! Sh-Shouldn’t we calm down first so we can have a proper talk without causing any trouble here?”
“There’s no way we can have a proper talk with someone like her.”
“But still—”
Just when I was trying to convince Lydia-san that it would be best to handle the situation with a cool head, the female elf from the Magic Academy approached the red-haired elf. The female elf from the Magic Academy still looked a bit flustered.
“Gr-Great Mage-sama! Di-Did you just say this gentleman was able to provide sufficient magic power to get the teleportation circle working again in just one second…?”
“That’s right. I meant exactly what I said. Well, I didn’t see it happen myself though. I heard it from the people who were working there. They said Liam-kun here only needed one second to get the teleportation circle working again. Now, do you understand? Do you really think such powerful magic power could be measured with this cheap magic measuring instrument? No, no need to answer me. Of course the answer is impossible~”
“I see… If what Great Mage-sama said is true, then it would be difficult for this device to detect this gentleman’s magic power…”
“Exactly~”
After the red-haired elf finished her explanation, she then tried to approach us. However, before she could get any closer to us, Lydia-san stepped forward, placing herself between me and the red-haired elf.
“You know~ I’m not interested in talking with you. I want to talk with Liam-kun, who’s behind you. Could you please step aside?~”
“As long as I’m still alive, I will never allow someone like you to exchange words with Liam-san.”
Sensing the rising tension between them, I quickly moved in front of them. I realized the situation would take a dangerous turn if I let them be.
“Si-Since Great Mage-sama has something to say to me, then I will be honored to listen to you. Lydia-san, please calm down. Please.”
I asked, feeling a bit scared Lydia-san would refuse to calm down. Thankfully, Lydia-san sheathed her sword after a brief pause.
“How could I possibly refuse after Liam-san asked me so earnestly like that? Very well. I will step back and simply observe the conversation quietly.”
“Thank you, Lydia-san!”
After thanking Lydia-san, I turned my attention to the red-haired elf. She then asked me.
“There’s a lot I want to ask, but why would someone with such amazing magic power like you come to a magic school?”
“Uh… I-I’m not amazing or anything, but I came to this place because I wanted to attend the short-term lesson program.”
“But Liam-kun, don’t you think you’ve already mastered the stuff they can teach you in the Magic Academy?”
Surprised at how much she was overestimating me, I quickly shook my head and responded.
“N-No! That’s not true! I mean, compared to Lydia-san and the Great Mage-sama, I’m still lacking in many things… In fact, I just recently got expelled from an A-rank party…”
“Expelled from an A-rank party…? You, Liam-kun…?”
The red-haired elf woman looked genuinely bewildered.
“M-My apologies! Please don’t mind what I just said before!”
Upon hearing my words, the red-haired elf woman leaned forward to meet my gaze and gently patted my head.
“Being born with such powerful magic power can come with its problems too, huh…? But don’t worry. I understand how amazing your magic really is, more than anyone else…”
“-?! Ah… Umm…”
Feeling embarrassed from being patted on the head, I was about to say something when suddenly, Lydia-san pulled the red-haired elf woman away from me and yelled.
“How dare you pat Liam-san on the head! Even I… Even though I haven’t… I can’t tolerate this any longer!!”
Lydia-san drew her sword out and pointed it at the red-haired elf woman as she declared.
“I challenge you to a duel!”
