The Demon and the Healer - Chapter 26- Chaos in the Capital~2!
‘Where….am…’ The moment when my mind regained the ability to process my whereabouts, I instantly snapped open my eyes.
The first thing I was greeted with was a deep raven sky. It seemed like it was about to rain. The thumps of something humongous crashing to the ground reverberated profoundly, reminding me that the threat hasn’t been subdued.
“Aaahh!!!” I audibly groaned as I supported my damaged body and got up to have a look around the place. Urgency working as a great fuel to force me to get up.
‘Oh lord… ‘ I couldn’t help but feel my heart-shattering at the result of the chaos which ensued because of our previous failure.
The Titan not only tackled Helios’s attack but also released it to bestow nothing but mayhem upon the capital, destroying everything in the path, and snatching hundreds of lives in the process.
I tried my best to not let any innocent life get sacrificed today, yet…
I have no clue where Helios and the others were. The knight order was engaged to keep the Titan distracted but all they were doing was to forge their lives in nothing but merciless extinction. I do not have the strength to put even a dent over it. In some minutes the Titan would crush the whole empire and here I would watch it helplessly…
The sense of dread made my already weakened legs more feeble before I plopped down at my place, unable to snatch my gaze away from the sight which has unfolded in just a few minutes.
‘No… I can’t give up… I won’t give up! This is my home, my people! How can I… ‘ I utilized some mana to heal my broken bones so I could move freely before I landed on my feet and activated my Third Eye to search for Glain and Grace first.
Some meters ahead, I found a familiar mana signature but it was feeble enough to be counted as a dying person’s remaining essence. But I didn’t lose hope and ran as fast as I could to reach there.
Lost on option as to how I could remove the debris, I took a wooden stump from the piles of rubles before I placed it in support to a fulcrum before I began exerting as much strength as I could. I do not know Mana Fortification but I possess decent strength thanks to all the weight training I have done in the past.
**CRACK**
The wooden stump cracked but I didn’t lose hope and continued my struggle to set my friend free of her misery.
“Ahhhhh!!” With a strong push, I finally lifted the broken wall beneath which lay the unconscious Witch.
I chanted a healing spell that deals with both the physical and mental realms of a body. Her mana core was still stable which was a plus point and so were her internal organs. Just a steel bar was impaling her ribs and injuring her lungs, but it didn’t take me long to heal her after I pulled away the bar.
“…Char?” Grace parted her lids as her vitality returned. I couldn’t help but let my tears roll down as I saw my friend once again alive and breathing.
“Yeah, it’s me. It’s me…” I hugged Grace and assured the girl of my presence while trying to calm myself down as well.
We might have lost our connection some months ago on bad terms, I simply cannot leave my friend to die out there when I have the capability to save them.
“Now, hurry and find Glain. He’s three blocks away, near the public church.”
Grace somehow rose to her feet before she gave me a weird glance…of embarrassment? Nevertheless, she nodded and took off toward Glain, to save him.
She has enough potions in her spatial storage to save Glain and bring him back to action.
‘Now, I just need to find Helios… ‘
I sprang to my feet, my observative skill working actively to search for the Embodiment of Light. It was heart-wrenching to hear those many weak cries of the people but I need to save Helios first since he is the only one who could make any difference in this situation.
‘Found him… ‘I began dashing toward the place where Helios was when suddenly I heard a familiar voice from behind.
“Don’t do this, Charlotte.” My eyes widened before I twirled on my feet to see a familiar raven-haired man whose eyes unlike generally, carried a sense of sadness.
“Ray…no, wait. Can you help with this Titan, Ray? Many people-”
“Let’s go, Charlotte. This is not a place we should be.”
For a moment, I couldn’t believe that it was Ray who was saying this but because of my skill, I could sense the darkness in him which made me sure that this one is not fake.
However, his words were not making any sense in this scenario at all. Why is he talking like this?
“What are you saying, Ray?! We need to stop this!”
“You don’t understand, Charlotte. This is all a trap to kill me and separate us. Please listen to me and let’s go back.”
I was blank in my head for several moments.
I did hear his words but it was getting hard to comprehend it’s meaning.
…so according to Ray, the emergence of the Titan is a part of the plan of the Empire to subdue Ray, and all these lives are wasted just to separate us?
Even though Ray is someone special to me, I couldn’t help but treat his words as total rubbish.
“..if you don’t want to help, then it’s fine. Just don’t expect me to turn myself away from my people…”
If Ray didn’t want to help then I cannot force him. Though I hoped that for the sake of what we share between us, he would not leave me here. However, I couldn’t expect Ray to do everything just because he have feelings for me.
I know that yet…somehow, I felt betrayed…
‘No time to wail… ‘ I was about to continue my march when suddenly a warm hand pressed over my shoulder, bringing my feet to a halt as I heard Ray’s whisper before he jumped into the battlefield.
“Stay here, woman. I can handle this alone…”
