- Chapter 3 - I’m no Longer Happy Even if You Call Me Your Best Friend
I’m no Longer Happy Even if You Call Me Your Best Friend
I’m a girl who stands out in class.
I’m a type of person who doesn’t talk to other people and spends my time alone.
While everyone around me was introducing themselves and talking to their new friends, I just sat on my seat, gazing out the window. It’s clear that I don’t want to communicate with anyone.
I’m not good at communicating with other people, especially with guys.
While I was gazing out the window, he suddenly called out to me.
‘Hello, nice to meet you.’
I guess he greeted me out of concern because I was alone. A boy who was sitting next to me spoke to me.
‘…hi.’
It would be rude to ignore him completely, so I should at least greet him back.
That was the end of our conversation.
He will surely think that I’m a unsociable girl and won’t get involved with me anymore.
I thought so, but he kept talking to me after that.
As we get to know each other, we found out that we like many things in common, such as our taste in games.
When he forgot to bring his bento for lunch, I shared my bento with him and he happily ate it…anyway, I feel so comfortable being with him.
‘You don’t enjoy being with me, do you?’
It’s a habit of mine to ask him that question.
I’m blunt, not very friendly and always negative thinking.
I just say anything that’s on my mind.
I heard this kind of people are called downers.
I just thought that there is no way he enjoys being with me.
Touya looked stunned when I first ask him that question, but then he eventually smiled at me.
‘I’ll ensure you that I enjoy being with you and make you happy so that you don’t have to worry about it.’
He said so confidently.
‘Hmm, that’s a lot of confidence.’
‘Of course, I’m used to it. You can just be who you are in front of me.’
I didn’t have high hopes for it, but…even though it’s sometimes frustrating, being with him is really fun.
We are always together, talking, playing…it’s nothing special, but we certainly had fun.
Somewhere along the way, I found myself stop asking him that question.
Then one day.
‘Hey.’
As the two of us were about to leave school, we were called out by someone. I turned around toward the voice and saw two boys looking at me.
‘Are you guys dating?’
‘‘……ha?’’
Me and Touya simultaneously said so.
‘What is this guy talking about?’
I thought so to myself.
If a boy and a girl are talking to each other, you would immediately assume that they’re a couple? What are you, a five-year-old girl?
I glanced at Touya, wondering what he thinks about it.
‘We’re best friends. It’s only natural that we get along well, right?’
At that time, I nodded to Touya’s words.
But now, I’m no longer happy even if he calls me his best friend.
For Touya, I am a good friend of his. We are not really in a relationship, but we are close enough to hang out and have dinner together.
But for me…Touya is more than just a best friend.
I have spent my days with these feelings buried deep in my heart.
‘…what? You want me to go out somewhere with your male friend alone? In short, you’re asking me to go on a date with your friend?’
And today, when Touya asked me to do so, something inside me snapped.

It’s a little while later after Iko said we were going to her house instead of the ramen shop or a family restaurant. We finally arrive at her house.
“I’ll make you some hot cocoa. Sit down.”
“Okay then.”
I do as Iko told me so and sit down on the sofa in front of the TV.
Yoriko’s parents are working overseas and she currently lives alone in an apartment. When we feel like to hang out with each other but don’t want to go anywhere, I just usually go to Iko’s apartment.
I wait for Iko for a while and she finally comes back from the kitchen.
“Hmm. Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“Oh, thanks.”
Iko comes to sit next to me, handing me one of the two cups of hot cocoa she made.
Is it just my imagination or she is closer to me than usual?
“Then, let’s continue our conversation from earlier. I’ve changed my mind.”
“Eh, you’re not going to accept that request!?”
This is not good, I have to convince Iko somehow…
“I want to accept that request, it’s a request from my best friend after all, but before that, I want to do something first.”
“Hmm, what is it?”
Iko closes the distance between us. Our shoulders touch each other.
“I’m pissed that you don’t see me as a girl. That’s why—”
Slowly, Iko’s face comes closer to mine…
“That’s why—can I stop being your best friend?”
“Eh? Hmmph…!?”
