Chapter 11 : The Dragon’s Fear
‘Was it a success…? No, not yet.’
The moment I arrived at the castle with Mira-san, my master was already in my arms.
She was staring blankly at me with a calm, somewhat dazed expression. It seems that even in this state, she recognized me.
“Is that you, Minato?”
“Yeah.”
See, she noticed after all. Well, since I’ve spent so much time with her, she would recognize me no matter how I’m dressed. But, breaking into the castle so daringly made me feel like a real villain, and I can’t help but feel a thrill.
“This is… pretty exciting.”
“Kuku, if you’re going to do something big, you might as well enjoy it.”
Before we headed to the castle, Mira-san was already in high spirits. It’s probably a reaction to having lived as a dragon all this time. The mix of fear and surprise in people’s reactions to sudden events, seeing sights she’d never seen before, and the act of rescuing my master itself is fresh and enjoyable for her.
“I’m sorry, Master. I’ve come to rescue you.”
“I heard… that someone would come to save me.”
“It’s not just a rescue, but more like an extraction. I don’t want anyone bothering you anymore. And I want people to know that you have someone special looking after you.”
“I see…”
“So, Master, for now, please be my most precious person.”
“Yes~♡”
Alright, this should be fine. Right now, Mira-san’s presence is overwhelming everything else here, even more than mine. The silence is almost tangible, with no one daring to move. None of the people here have ever seen a dragon up close, let alone expected to meet one.
“Lady Elysia! What is the meaning of this?”
However, there was one who moved. It was the second prince, Isaac—the main culprit behind all this. I need to respond to his question calmly.
“Allow me to answer on her behalf… First, she is someone really important to me. No matter if you’re a prince, I won’t take kindly to anyone bothering her. Besides, hasn’t she always rejected you? I’m a Dragon Rider—a person who tamed a dragon from the legends. I asked to keep my identity hidden.”
A Dragon Rider doesn’t exist… but it sounds pretty cool. The stares directed at my master, whom I called my precious person, split between envy at how much power and connections I must have and fear of the unknown.
‘Hmm?’
At that moment, I noticed a familiar face in the corner of my vision. It was my old family… a once poor baronial house that has since recovered splendidly. They don’t know I’m still alive… or rather they think I’m dead.
“…Haah, I don’t feel anything.”
Shaking off my thoughts, I continued, addressing Isaac and the other royals and nobles.
“Prince Isaac.”
“What is it?”
“You certainly love Elysia, don’t you? I’m not saying your feelings are a lie. But have you ever considered this? No matter what happens, you will inevitably leave her behind and die.”
“…..!?”
This stings even me… My master, being an elf, lives a long life—much longer than humans. Races with a long life-span usually bond with those of similar lifespans, but between an elf and a human, the human always dies first.
“From your reaction, I guess you never thought about it.”
Isaac bit his lip in frustration.
“I’ve said a lot, but the conclusion is simple: don’t interfere with her life anymore. Respect her way of living, inherent to elves, instead of imposing your will on her.”
“…..”
“Of course, I consider her very precious… There’s no room for anyone else. If anyone tries, they can be kicked by a dragon straight to hell.”
Well then, it’s time to leave. The king and queen, as well as the prince, must have a lot of questions for me and my master, especially about our connection to the dragon. As soon as we jumped onto Mira-san’s back, she spoke up.
“From now on, you must absolutely not bother Elysia. She has someone who cares for her, and I, a dragon, am watching over her. If you don’t want to provoke a dragon’s wrath, refrain from any excessive actions.”
A dragon spoke…!?
Seeing the people’s uniformly shocked expressions, I smiled wryly as we left. The full moon in the sky seemed closer than ever, as if flying brought it nearer. I stared at it in awe, feeling a sense of completion.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
“It was my first job as a dragon in a while, and it wasn’t bad. But how did you manage to say such cringe-worthy lines?”
“Haha… but it was necessary, right?”
“Indeed, it attracted more than enough attention. The fear directed at me and the change in how they look at Elysia was remarkable.”
“……”
“Master?”
“Elysia?”
Suddenly, I noticed that my master had gone quiet. When I turned to look, I saw she had leaned against my back, sound asleep.
“She must be exhausted.”
“She has been tired lately.”
“Yeah.”
Well then, let’s give her some time to rest.
I wish we could have enjoyed the beautiful moon together, but there will be plenty of chances to ride on Mira-sN’s back. We’ll enjoy it together next time.
“Elysia’s connection to a dragon might draw some interference from other countries, but we’ll handle it the same way then.”
“Thanks, Mira-san. You’re the best.”
“Of course, I am your wife after all!”
…Just how amazing is my wife?=
“By the way, I noticed some people who harbored ill feelings towards you. Who were they?”
“My family.”
“Oh?”
“They’re quite ambitious. Officially, I’m dead, but if they find out I’m alive, things could get complicated.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, with you around, they might propose something outrageous like using the dragon’s power to conquer the world.”
That family would definitely say something like that without shame.
“If you wish, it can be done.”
“No thanks. I’m not interested in ruling the world—having you by my side is enough.”
“…Fufu, I see.”
And so, we returned back to the guild with Master in tow.
Naturally, rumors about my master’s connection to a dragon spread quickly.
While contact from the royal family ceased, my master started receiving many letters from other countries… mainly about the dragon.
Although I anticipated this, I still felt guilty. But she always gently reassured me not to worry about it.
