Chapter 1 : The Abyss
“I found something gruesome…”
It was more than enough to force me to confront my desire to escape from reality. I thought it was just another routine monster-slaying mission assigned by the Adventurers’ Guild.
“Hey! What the hell are you doing!?”
“Shut up! Just get down there already!”
Sure, I wanted new gear, but more than anything, I needed money.
I wanted to give a decent gift to the Guild Master, who not only took me in when I fled my wretched home but also taught me the basics of combat.
But… it seemed that wouldn’t be possible.
I wasn’t from a well-off family, nor did I possess any exceptional talent… Yet, despite this, some people disliked how well the Guild Master treated me and planned to attack me cowardly, casting me into the Abyss.
“…..”
Explaining the Abyss would take a while, but the immediate issue was the shocking sight before my eyes.
“…It’s a dragon.”
A wounded, silver dragon lay prostrate before me. This world is full of various magical beasts, but among them, dragons are particularly mythical creatures. Dragons are seen as symbols of both disaster and hope, sometimes guiding people as a beacon of light, and at other times, bringing darkness and destruction. They’re considered mythical because they are only seen once every few centuries.
“…What should I do?”
I thought I was on a direct path to death after being cast into the Abyss, yet here I was, witnessing a myth. This might be the most shocking experience since witnessing the Guild Master naked or remembering my reincarnation into this world.
By the way, I’m a reincarnator… but that’s irrelevant now!
“This is… terrible.”
The dragon lay breathing weakly. If it weren’t so bloodied, its silver scales would likely shine more brilliantly than any jewel worth millions of gold. The horns reminiscent of a unicorn and the fangs peeking from its mouth… Just imagine what kind of equipment could be made from these if I could take them back.
“…There’s nothing around.”
There was nothing useful at all. What am I even trying to do here… am I losing my mind in this situation? Because looking at this dragon in this state, I somehow wanted to help it.
“A mythical creature stronger and longer-lived than humans… What can a mere human like me do for it?”
Despite my complaints, I didn’t stop. I spread out all my belongings to check them… a bunch of medicinal herbs and a few expensive potions that could instantly heal wounds and neutralize poison, which I had acquired during the mission.
‘…Damn those guys.’
The faces of the attackers floated in my mind. It was clear they targeted me, but I foolishly thought we could talk it out… a naive mindset leftover from my peaceful life in Japan. Even if I might never escape from here, I swore to punch those faces if I ever did… With that resolve, I approached the dragon.
“Dragon-san… Are you okay?”
No response. Well, even though dragons are classified as magical beasts, it’s not like they can understand human language… In fact, if it were awake, it would probably either roast me with its fiery breath or gobble me up.
“…Damn it! Whatever happens, I won’t back down now!”
With determination, I started using healing magic on the dragon.
Humans… they end up doing things which make less sense when faced with death. To be honest… I had given up. I knew that my master and others might grieve, but I had resigned myself to my fate. Whether I starved to death, died of dehydration, or got eaten by magical beasts, at least a dragon would kill me quickly.
“Remember, no matter what happens, never give up until the end.”
My master’s teaching echoed in my mind… I’m sorry, master. If there’s one regret, it’s that my fall into the Abyss will likely be dismissed as an accident caused by my clumsiness. If this happens again… it’s frustrating that such scum are part of the Guild my master loves.
“Since it’s healing magic, please work properly!”
But I’m terrible at healing magic.
“The god who reincarnated me could’ve at least given me some perks…”
Complaining wouldn’t help, but making an effort, no matter how bad, is important. While the major wounds remained, the smaller ones gradually healed, revealing pristine silver scales.
“…Huh?”
Then I realized that I didn’t need to be doing this. The dragon’s breathing, which had been so weak, had normalized, and its severe wounds were healing rapidly.
“Amazing…”
I murmured in awe but kept my hand on the dragon. After watching its wounds heal for a while, I suddenly felt a gaze and looked around.
“…What is it?”
No one else should be here, right? Just as I thought that and looked up… I found myself staring into the deep crimson eyes of the dragon that had opened at some point. The silver scales were beautiful, but those eyes were even more so. Crimson eyes and silver scales… Yes, the dragon I wanted to save had awakened.
“…..”
I was speechless… but at the same time, I thought I might finally escape this fear. Those who fall into the Abyss are doomed… Knowing this, I just wanted a quick death… but then,
“Human… was it you who healed me?”
“…What?”
I blurted out in Japanese, which was useless in this world.
“…Eh, who?!”
The voice that echoed in my mind was dignified and female. I looked around, but I couldn’t find anyone else… which, if there had been, would have been a whole other problem.
“Where are you looking? There is no one here but you and me.”
“…Huh?”
No way… I looked back up at the dragon.
“Could it be…?”
“Yes, it’s true. Human, have you not heard? Dragons live in myth… and having lived for so long, we understand and can speak human language.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard that.”
“Is that so?”
I nodded. Dragons are indeed mythical beings and legendary creatures… but I’ve never heard of them speaking human language, and no such records exist… unless we’re talking about classified national documents.
“Well, leaving that aside… human, I will ask you again… Was it you who healed me?”
“Ah, yes…”
“I see.”
Master… There’s a dragon in the Abyss that speaks human language. Though I doubt I’ll be able to relay this information… This is undoubtedly a major discovery!
In the depths of the Abyss, a man met a dragon. This encounter not only changed the man’s fate but also became a pivotal moment in his life.
