Chapter 2 : The Dragon
“……”
In a certain room, a beautiful elf woman was looking through some documents.
From her appearance to her demeanor, everything about her exuded the aura of a noble lady.
She had long blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes.
Her pristine white clothing elegantly framed her voluptuous figure.
“…Phew, I suppose it’s time for a break.”
The woman’s name was Elysia — an elf living among humans, known to many as the guild master.
She gently massaged her shoulders to ease the stiffness from the paperwork.
“My birthday is next week… Haha, for long-lived elves, birthdays aren’t particularly special. But ever since that child started giving me birthday presents, I’ve been eagerly looking forward to it each year.”
On the table, there was a photo of Elysia and a young boy.
In the photo, Elysia wore a smile reminiscent of a saint, while the boy beside her beamed innocently and warmly. This boy had rekindled in Elysia a sense of family she had long forgotten.
However, Elysia suddenly noticed something.
“Huh… why?”
The photo was protected by magic to prevent it from ever getting dirty, and the glass encasing it was specially made.
Yet, the glass was now cracked.
Moreover, the crack seemed to deliberately split the image of the boy, causing a bad feeling to rise in Elysia’s chest.
“…Minato.”
The moment she uttered that name, the worst news arrived.
“Master, something bad has happened! Minato… Minato-kun has fallen into the Abyss!”
“…What?”
Elysia felt an illusion as if everything before her eyes was going dark.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
‘I wonder what will happen to me from now on…’
I had fallen into the Abyss… yet I was still alive. More than that, I was facing a dragon who can talk in human language.
What is this… the dragon is so cool!
Somehow, I was calm enough to have such inappropriate thoughts about the current situation.
“I sensed a mysterious power from you… similar to that magic just now.”
“Magic…? That trash-like spell?”
“Heh, ‘trash’ you say. Even if I didn’t receive your healing, I would have recovered, but that wound would have taken at least three days… yet it healed in an instant. A human who can heal a dragon… who are you really?”
At those words, I could only stare at my hands in bewilderment.
“I’m not lying… Thanks to my master who taught me how to fight, I have some abilities, but I’m really terrible at healing magic. It takes me ages to heal even a minor cut.”
“Hmm? It doesn’t seem like you’re lying.”
I nodded in reply.
Apparently, a Saintess can even heal lost limbs if treated immediately, but as I keep saying, I have zero talent for magic.
My master even hesitated to say it, but my magic abilities were that poor… so, high-level healing spells were beyond my capabilities.
“Can you use it once more?”
“But the wound is already—”
Just as I was about to say that, the dragon drove its own claw into its flesh, causing bright red blood to gush out.
“Hey, what are you doing?!”
“See, there’s a wound. Now, can you heal it?”
This dragon is really strange… Well, it’s my first time meeting a dragon, so I can’t really say what’s strange or not.
I reluctantly cast a healing spell on the wound.
And much to my surprise? The wound closed up rapidly, the scales returned to their pristine silvery state.
“…Do I actually have a talent for magic?”
I thought as much, but deep down, I knew it wasn’t true.
“It seems our compatibility is exceptionally good.”
“Compatibility?”
“Dragons inevitably find a destined partner in their lifetime. In simpler terms, they are called ‘mates’.”
“A mate?”
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing, I am sorry.”
A mate is like a partner in the animal hierarchy… but why is this dragon suddenly talking about mates?
The dragon looked at me with gentle eyes as I stood there, probably with a dumbfounded expression.
“For us dragons, once we find a mate, it’s destiny that both cannot be without the other in every sense… meaning, your so-called useless healing magic becomes the highest form of magic for me… stronger than my own healing abilities.”
“Wow…”
“You still don’t get it?”
“What…?”
The dragon sighed… and then lowered its head, licking my face… it felt slightly slimy, but there was no bad smell… if anything, there was a sweet scent?
Then the dragon said something even more surprising.
“I have chosen you as my mate.”
“…What?!”
“A mate… to put it simply, it means getting married.”
“Marriage…?”
“Seriously… is it possible that you do not understand what it means?”
No, I’m not that stupid… so, the dragon’s words meant it chose me as its mate… we’re married from now on?
“Are we going to be a couple ?”
“Yes. I’m the wife and you’re the husband.”
“Ah, so you’re female…”
“Yes.”
The dragon nodded confidently.
While I still stood there in a daze… too much had happened for my brain to keep up, I eventually nodded to the proposal.
“Then… Do you want to get married?”
“Oh, you’re willing to accept it? I’m so happy, my husband!”
“Whoa!”
Her head alone was as big as my body, so when she embraced me, it was with great strength… yet her skin was soft, and her grip gentle.
‘Master… I ended up marrying a dragon.’
The dragon nuzzled her face against mine… she looked fierce, but thinking of her as a huge cat or dog made her seem cute… yes, I’ll just think she’s cute.
“What is your name?”
“It’s Minato.”
“My name is Mira — nice to meet you Minato.”
That’s a surprisingly cute name…
“Mira-san… nice to meet you.”
Upon hearing that, Mira-san purred happily.
However, her eyes soon glowed redder, and in a low voice that made me shiver, she said,
“A dragon’s bond is absolute. If it’s ever broken, I will devour you without mercy.”
“Ah, okay…”
“I will eat you and burn myself to death with my flames.”
“That’s heavy!”
“That’s what it means to be mates. Do you understand? I can no longer live without you.”
The responsibility is enormous!!
But… thinking it over calmly, why did I make this decision so easily…?
Falling into the Abyss made me somewhat reckless, but I feel I was too careless.
“What’s wrong? You look troubled…”
“Oh, well… it’s just—”
I honestly told her what I was thinking.
Mira-san listened to me until the end, and rather than showing any anger, she smiled softly.
“I understand it was too sudden. I’m just happy you’re considering it seriously — Minato, let’s deepen our bond as mates. I believe we’ll develop a great relationship… besides, I’m quite a devoted partner, you know?”
“Haha… I see.”
…With her saying that much, I can’t back out now.
It’s not that I’ve given up… it’s not that I dislike it… a genuine smile appeared on my face, and Mira-san and I laughed together.
“Well then, let’s get out of this place.”
“…What?”
“What’s wrong? Do you prefer staying in this gloomy place? I certainly don’t…”
“No, it’s just… we’re in the Abyss, right? Can we leave?”
“What do you think I am? I’m a dragon.”
“…Wow.”
Master… It looks like I can get out of the Abyss.
I might have caused a stir with my fall in the abyss, but I’m coming home now.
“You can climb onto my back.”
“Okay…”
I jumped onto Mira-san’s large back.
Then, Mira-san spread her wings wide and took off to the skies.
