Chapter 19: Sakura’s First Experience (1)
That evening, Sakura was sitting at the counter of Café Valencia, reading a book as usual.
Yuuki was busy handling orders, and Sakura occasionally followed him with her eyes from the corner of her vision.
After 4 p.m. on a Monday, the café began to fill up.
Then, Misato-mama approached Sakura with a flustered expression.
“Sakura-san, I have something to discuss. Do you have a moment?”
Misato-mama, who doesn’t look like she’s in her forties, is a cute, ageless beauty and the café’s patissier and manager.
“Huh? What is it?”
“It’s a bit hard to talk here, so I’m sorry, but could you come inside?”
Misato-mama beckoned Sakura to the kitchen.
Wondering what it was about, Sakura glanced at Yuuki.
But he was focused on making drinks, seemingly unaware of her.
Entering the kitchen, Sakura saw the master, Shintaro Nanatsumori, busily cooking.
Noticing Sakura, the master flashed a charming, mature smile.
It seemed he was already aware of the topic.
As Sakura curiously looked around the kitchen for the first time, Misato-mama began speaking.
“I’ll get straight to the point. Sakura-san, would you consider working part-time at this café?”
“Huh? Me…?”
“Yes, you wait for Yuuki-kun to finish work every day, right? If you could help out in the meantime, it would be a huge help…”
“…”
Sakura was thrown off by Misato-mama’s sudden offer, unable to find words.
“We actually have a part-timer who works weekday evenings, but she called to say her child was injured and hospitalized, so she needs to take a month off…”
According to Misato-mama, the part-timer has a young child who broke their leg and will be hospitalized for about a month.
Since the child is still small, she needs to stay with them and take care of their needs, so she asked for time off.
“Please, could you work part-time for just one month? It’s our situation, so we’ll pay generously, and we’ll provide staff meals too.”
“I see… But I’ve never worked a part-time job before.”
“Really?”
“Yes, my father doesn’t allow me to work.”
“I see… Your father is strict, isn’t he? Hmm, that’s tricky.”
Misato-mama, hearing about Sakura’s family situation, held her head in her hands.
“I know it’s a lot to ask, but could you please consider it? Just until the part-timer returns, please…”
Misato-mama clasped her hands together in a pleading gesture.
Seeing Misato-mama’s desperate state, Sakura thought hard.
Her father would absolutely oppose her working…
But Misato-mama was genuinely in trouble…
After much thought, Sakura reached a conclusion.
This job was for a limited one-month period, and it wasn’t for money but to help someone.
Convincing herself of this, Sakura decided to accept Misato-mama’s offer.
“Alright, I’ll help out for the one month until she returns.”
“Thank you, thank you, Sakura-san… I hate to say this after asking, but will your father be okay with it?”
“It’s… probably not okay, but I’m not under constant watch, and one month should be fine, I think.”
“Really? That’s a huge help. You know, the café’s been crazy busy in the evenings lately, so I was at a loss. Thank you so much, Sakura-san.”
Misato-mama took Sakura’s hands, bowing repeatedly.
“But I’ve never done customer service. Will I be able to do it?”
“That’s fine. I’ll teach you the basics thoroughly, so leave it to me.”
“Yes, please take care of me.”
“Sorry for the selfish request, but could you start working today?”
“O-Okay, I’ll do my best.”
“Then, please change into this uniform. The women’s changing room is at the back of the kitchen.”
Misato-mama handed Sakura a Café Valencia uniform on a hanger.
It was a clean white short-sleeved blouse paired with a calm café mocha-colored knee-length flare skirt.
The blouse’s small round collar and orange embroidery on the cuffs added a touch of accent.
The off-white apron had the “Café Valencia” logo embroidered on the chest.
After changing, Sakura emerged from the changing room.
“H-How do I look…?”
“Sakura-chan, it suits you perfectly!”
The white blouse enhanced her refined aura, and the flare skirt swayed lightly with her movements.
The tightly tied apron ribbon accentuated her slim waist.
Her long black hair was tied into a high ponytail to keep it out of the way.
“With your great figure, you can pull off any uniform perfectly!”
Misato-mama nodded with satisfaction, praising Sakura’s uniform look.
“Now, let’s get started with the basics of customer service.”
Misato-mama took out a handheld terminal.
“This is the handheld terminal for taking orders. First, you input the customer’s table number… Then select the menu item and enter the quantity. It’s easy once you get used to it.”
Sakura followed Misato-mama’s finger movements with a serious gaze.
“When a customer arrives and sits, smile and say, ‘Welcome, have you decided on your order?’
After taking the order, repeat it back to confirm.
For example, ‘Let me confirm your order: one café latte and today’s cake set, correct?’
That’s the most important part.”
Next, Misato-mama handed Sakura a silver circular tray.
“This is the trench.
You use it to carry food and drinks.
Try holding it empty first.
The trick is to support it with your whole forearm from the elbow, not just your wrist, for stability.”
Sakura held the trench, focusing on her center of gravity as instructed.
“The menu includes drinks like coffee, tea, and juice, food like pasta and sandwiches, and our pride, cakes and parfaits. You’ll learn the details over time, so don’t worry.”
Finishing her explanation, Misato-mama patted Sakura’s shoulder with a pon.
“Alright, that’s the basics. You’ll have to get used to the rest through practice. You know the saying, ‘Practice makes perfect’… It’s okay to make mistakes, so just give it a try. If you’re stuck, ask me or Yuuki-kun anytime.”
“Yes! I’ll do my best!”
Sakura’s first part-time job experience was about to begin.
T/N: It’s kinda hard to read it on just one paragraph isn’t it? I’ll be separating the dialogue content as it’s separated in the raw moving forward.
