……
Yuuki Shinomiya is a 20-year-old second-year university student.
The day before his entrance exams, he caught the flu and ran a fever over 40°C.
Naturally, he couldn’t take the exams and had no choice but to take a gap year before enrolling in his current university—truly a man with no luck.
Fortunately, Yuuki is handsome and brilliant, consistently ranking in the top three academically in high school.
With a kind personality that gets along with everyone, a gentle demeanor, and a refreshing smile, it’s no wonder the girls around him couldn’t leave him alone.
In high school, he was called behind the gym and confessed to multiple times with, “I like you, please go out with me.”
But he had no interest in dating girls he didn’t like and politely declined each time with, “I’m sorry.”
In the end, throughout his three years of high school, he never met a girl who made his heart race, and he never fell in love.
For Yuuki, that day’s events were nothing short of a bolt from the blue.
He was waiting for his train home at the university’s nearest station.
Glancing across to the opposite platform, he saw a girl standing there.
She was a breathtakingly refined and lovely beauty.
Dressed in a white dress, her long black hair—reaching almost to her waist—fluttered in the breeze, her large, adorable eyes, her translucent white skin, and her faintly melancholic profile were strikingly beautiful.
Yuuki’s eyes were glued to her.
The way she pressed a hand to her ear to keep her hair from swaying in the wind was indescribably picturesque.
Perhaps noticing Yuuki’s gaze, she turned toward him, and their eyes met.
At that moment, a gust of wind accompanied the arrival of a train, and she disappeared from view.
It lasted only about 15 seconds, but Yuuki was utterly captivated by her.
A beauty unlike any he had ever seen.
Truly his ideal type, right in the strike zone.
Yuuki noticed his heart racing and his face flushing.
Is this what they call love at first sight?
I want to see her again…
Yuuki’s eyes followed the train carrying her away for as long as he could.
※
A month later, one evening in mid-May, after finishing university classes, Yuuki was heading back to his apartment.
The days were getting hotter with each passing day.
A fire truck approached from behind, blaring its loud siren as it sped past Yuuki.
(A fire at this hour…?)
Following the fire truck with his eyes, Yuuki felt an inexplicable sense of unease.
(No way… It’s just a coincidence that it’s heading the same way…)
Reassuring himself, Yuuki hurried toward his apartment.
But his unease became reality.
The fire was at his apartment building.
Flames rose from the structure, and thick black smoke billowed into the sky.
Several fire trucks surrounded the building from a distance, with firefighters spraying water in unison.
“Danger! Please stay back, stay back!”
A barricade was set up in front of the apartment, preventing anyone from getting closer.
A crowd of onlookers, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, watched the fire from afar.
Flames roared fiercely from the building, accompanied by the sound of breaking glass and multiple explosions.
The heat was so intense it could be felt from where Yuuki stood.
Yuuki could only stand there, stunned, watching his apartment burn.
The acrid smell of burning filled the air, and the dry crackling of burning wood reached his ears.
By the time dusk enveloped the area, the fire was finally extinguished.
The apartment was completely burned down, and all of Yuuki’s belongings and furniture turned to ash.
※
Having lost his home and left in a daze, Yuuki explained his situation to a university friend, Kojima Kentaro, AKA Kojiken, and stayed at his apartment that night.
“Kojiken, thanks for letting me crash.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it. We’re buddies, right? But man, your apartment catching fire? That’s wild…”
“…Yeah, it’s really something else.”
Yuuki still couldn’t fully accept the reality.
“Don’t let it get you down too much. Something good’s bound to happen eventually.”
Kojiken patted Yuuki’s shoulder twice.
“Kojiken, you’re actually a pretty good guy, huh?”
“Yuuki, that ‘actually’ part is unnecessary.”
Kojiken scrunched up his face and laughed.
“Anyway, get some rest tonight. You can figure out what to do next when you wake up tomorrow.”
“…Yeah, you’re right.”
That night, Yuuki had a dream.
The beautiful girl he saw on the station platform appeared, smiling and beckoning him.
He tried to reach her, but he couldn’t find the stairs to the other platform.
Despite being only 20 meters away, the harder he struggled to reach her, the farther she seemed—a strange dream.
When he woke up, Kojiken was peering at his face with concern.
“You were having a nightmare. The fire must’ve really shaken you.”
Kojiken nodded to himself as he spoke.
Crawling out of bed and changing, Yuuki got a call from his mother.
He had already told his parents yesterday that his apartment burned down and he was staying at a friend’s place.
“Hello, Yuuki, are you okay?”
“Hey, Mom, morning.”
“Good morning. Did you sleep okay last night?”
“Yeah, I had a weird dream and apparently was having a nightmare, according to Kojiken, but I slept well enough.”
“A weird dream… Maybe the fire really got to you. By the way, Yuuki, you’re going to start looking for a new place, right?”
“Yeah, I was thinking of checking out some real estate agencies near the station this afternoon.”
“Good idea. You don’t want to inconvenience Kojima-san for too long. Oh, Dad wants to talk, so I’ll hand the phone over.”
Yuuki pictured his father’s worried face.
“Yuuki… You went through something rough…”
“Yeah, I never imagined my apartment would burn down…”
“You’re right… But it’s a good thing it didn’t happen in the middle of the night. If it had, you might’ve been asleep and not escaped in time… So think of this as a stroke of luck in an unlucky situation.”
Yuuki later learned the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
Thinking back, the apartment was over 40 years old, so it wasn’t impossible.
As his father said, it was truly fortunate the fire didn’t happen at midnight.
“You’re right. I’ll think of it as being lucky instead.”
“Yeah, that’s the spirit. By the way, the fire insurance should come through, but you’ll need money for a new place—deposit, advance rent, and all that—so I’ll send some money to your account.”
His father said he’d transfer about 300,000 yen to Yuuki’s account.
“Thanks, Dad.”
Fortunately, Yuuki had his debit card and smartphone, so he could manage his daily life.
“By the way, Yuuki, did you know Asuna-san is running an apartment business near your university?”
Asuna was the wife of Yuuki’s older brother, Daiki, who was seven years older than him.
The past tense is used for a reason.
On the morning of their wedding, Daiki died in a traffic accident.
A child crossing the street when the light turned green was about to be hit by a car running a red light. Daiki, who happened to be there, instinctively saved the child but was struck by the car himself.
Asuna became a widow before she could become a bride, a woman with a tragic fate.
“Huh? That’s news to me.”
“I only heard recently myself, but apparently, she’s running an apartment business with the insurance money Daiki left behind.”
“Wow, Asuna-san, huh?”
Yuuki had met Asuna a few times before his brother’s wedding, but she didn’t seem like the type to take the initiative to start something like that…
“I’ll call and ask if she has any vacant rooms. If there’s an opening, I’ll have her contact you.”
With that, his father gave him Asuna’s phone number.
“Okay, thanks, Dad.”
※
That evening, Yuuki’s phone rang.
It was from his sister-in-law, Asuna.
Though she became a widow on her wedding day, Asuna had already legally taken the Shinomiya surname before Daiki’s death.
Nearly four years had passed since the accident, and with no common topics to discuss, Yuuki hadn’t contacted her since.
“Nee-san, it’s been a while.”
“Yuuki-kun, long time no see. I heard from Dad about your apartment fire. That must’ve been tough.”
“Yeah… My room and all my stuff burned up.”
“You really went through something awful… So, Yuuki-kun, if you’re okay with it, would you like to live in my share house?”
“Share house…?”
His father had mentioned an apartment, but it seemed Asuna was running a share house.
“Yes, I used the insurance money from your brother to build a share house. It’s close to your university, so it’d be convenient. What do you think?”
“Uh, is it like a roommate situation?”
“Hmm, not exactly like a roommate setup. Everyone gets their own room, but the living room, bathroom, and toilet are shared. Our share house is spacious with good facilities, so it’s actually pretty popular.”
“Wow, really?”
“Yes, there’s one room available right now… Yuuki-kun, want to come check out the share house tomorrow?”
The share house was an eight-minute walk from Hakurindai Station, in the opposite direction of the town where Yuuki used to live.
Yuuki arranged to visit at 4 p.m. the next day.
“I’ll send the share house’s map data to your phone, Yuuki-kun.”
“Thanks, Nee-san. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Okay, looking forward to it.”
Right after hanging up, the map data arrived on Yuuki’s phone.
The share house was called “Venus Lounge.”
