Chapter 40: Haruto Reflects on That Day
Morning
Alice’s Room
My name is Haruto de Medici.
I hold the most prestigious title in the Kingdom of Laodecia, that of the Duke of Leinster.
Right now, I am incredibly happy.
In front of me is a breathtaking beauty with pink hair and deep blue eyes that resemble the ocean. She’s holding our adorable baby and smiling gently.
Of course, this baby is my daughter.
Watching them, my cheeks naturally soften, and I strike up a conversation.
“Alice, you know you can have the maids take care of the baby if you want.”
However, Alice firmly shakes her head, her lips drawn tight.
“No, I can’t do that. This is our child… I’ll take care of her until she’s old enough to understand the world.”
I feel an immense weight in the word “until” that she just used.
Alice is an unusual girl.
Despite being the eldest daughter of a ducal house, she doesn’t seem to mind doing tasks that commoners or maids usually perform.
Well, she only shows this side to me…
But it’s because Alice has this side that I was able to get her pregnant.
It all happened a year ago.
Due to a distortion in time and space, some powerful monster emerged from a forbidden realm. To exterminate them, I led a team of high-class adventurers, nobles, and knights to the border of the Kingdom of Iras.
The King granted me complete command. Using all my knowledge, I prepared to confront these creatures. Although Laodecia is relatively far from the forbidden realm, every few decades, a distortion in time-space occurs, and powerful monsters appear.
Normally, the best we could do was to hold them off until powerful mages and adventurers from the empire or other kingdoms arrived. But this time, they believed in my capabilities and decided to eliminate the monsters directly. And for good reason.
These monsters are potent. Any attempt to stall them would result in enormous casualties. That’s why they decided to utilize my powers to attack the monsters before they could destroy our city walls and towns. We already knew the location where the gate spawned due to the distortion, thanks to information from neighboring countries.
We had set up iron fences around the area where the monsters were expected to appear, creating an impregnable fortress. About a hundred of us were there, including me—nobles and adventurers. However, none of them were equipped with wands or swords that you’d expect to see in medieval fantasy stories.
Instead, they were armed to the teeth with a staggering number of mortars, rocket launchers, and machine guns. By the way, Isaac and Abel, who have always been of great help to me, were also there. Thanks to their magic amplification and magic transfer spells, I was able to summon this vast arsenal.
As time passed, and while we were on high alert, countless gates opened, and an endless stream of monsters began to pour out.
Rough estimate… Ten thousand!? That’s far too many.
“What… What is this number!?”
“We heard from the neighboring country that there’d only be a few hundred!”
“This is impossible… We’re all going to die…”
“The documents I read said the Kingdom of Laodecia would have no more than a thousand monsters arriving due to distortions in time and space!”
Most of my armed subordinates were in despair.
Our fortress was located in the mountains and held the high ground, giving us humans a significant advantage. However, facing this overwhelming number, anyone would feel fear. Agnes-sama told me that monsters get excited and become more destructive when they sense human fear. Her explanation seems accurate; the monsters are quickly advancing toward our position.
Low morale can negate the advantages of even the best weapons. At this rate, annihilation was a real possibility.
That’s when it happened.
“You fools!!”
“Know your ignorance!”
Isaac and Abel, both former adventurers, yelled out loudly, and then they continued.
“Have you forgotten the strength of Duke Haruto when he defeated Alan?”
“If you follow Duke Haruto, even if we were just ten people, we could defeat this swarm of monsters!”
The diminutive Isaac and the burly Abel clenched their fists tightly, glaring at everyone who was losing hope.
Then the captain of the knights, holding a machine gun near me, spoke up, full of regret.
“We can do this! Haruto-sama is with us! We will fight alongside him! We will win! Aaaaaah!”
The knight captain’s war cry inspired the other nobles, adventurers, and knights to let out their own battle cries.
“Ooooooooooh!”
Though we were only about a hundred strong, the noise could rival that of a thousand, or even ten thousand. I open my mouth to encourage them.
“Using the weapons I’ve summoned, we will surely win! Please, believe in me.”
Then, taking a deep breath and widening my eyes, I scream with all my might.
“Don’t underestimate modern weaponry!”
“Oooooooh! Haruto-sama’s modern weapons are the best!”
The monsters looked at us, momentarily puzzled, but then their eyes gleamed and they charged.
Alright, timing is everything…
“All units, ATTACK!”
I yell and blow a whistle.
Simultaneously, bullets, rocket missiles, and mortar shells, a staggering amount of ammunition, strike directly into the crowd of monsters.
“Blugh!”
“Blah!”
The monsters let out dying screams as they fell one after another.
The scene was reminiscent of a commercial for a zombie-killing game you’d see if you played that video on your smartphone. Crushing the gathered monsters with modern weaponry, there was something incredibly satisfying about it from an onlooker’s perspective.
As the one in command, I made sure they were properly handling their weapons. And they were. Smiling even.
“Damn, this is so fun…”
“The monsters can’t even get close! Take that! Take that!”
“Wow…this is interesting!”
“I’m out of bullets. Can someone lend me some?”
“No way! I’m keeping all this fun to myself!”
“What? Seriously?”
“Ahahahahaha!”
“Hehehehe!”
“Bwahahahaha!”
“This is so fun!!!”
“…”
I silently watch as they relish the slaughter.
Then, Isaac and Abel, who have been firing rockets like crazy, approach me.
“Lord Haruto! We’re out of rocket ammo!”
“Could you summon more? If possible, other types too…”
“Yes, of course. But I’ll need a boost in magic power and a transfer of it…”
“Understood!”
The two turn around, take out their wands, and Abel speaks loudly.
“Everyone, give me your magic power! Duke Haruto will summon more ammo for us! I’ll amplify it!”
Hearing his words, the other nobles, adventurers, and knights nod with smug expressions.
“Take all the magic we can offer!”
“Mine too!”
“Take it all!”
A mass of magic power immediately gathers in Abel’s wand. Then he shouts.
“Magic Amplification!”
The mass of magic power grows even larger.
“Bro, it’s all on you!”
“You got it! Magic Transfer!”
Isaac infuses the mass of magic power into my body.
I immediately summon an incalculable number of bullets, rocket shells, and mortar shells. They eagerly start using the ammunition right away.
With this amount, it looks like we can eliminate all the monsters charging at us. With faces as fierce as bloodthirsty vampires, they attack the monsters and once again echo the same words.
“Haruto-sama’s modern weapons are the best!”
Their voices seem even more spirited than before.
[Postscript]
I intended to finish the battle scene in one part, but it ended up being longer than expected!
