Chapter 38: The Sharp Hunter Maid
Two adventurers led us to a nearby waterfront.
The area was illuminated with magic stones that emitted a mysterious light, and various people, such as couples and families, were enjoying their packed lunches and having barbecues.
There were also quite a few party-going youths, similar to the vibe of Paripis(party people), or so it seemed. It had a feeling similar to Kamogawa in Japan.
With just my takoyaki, the stomachs of five people wouldn’t be satisfied.
Therefore, I bought some squid skewers from a guy with a nice attitude, as well as huge boar skewers being sold around the river, and charcoal-grilled chicken with added spices.
The menu mainly consisted of protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
The two adventurers, one muscular and the other slender, gestured for us to come over.
Since we didn’t know the geography around here, we decided to leave it to them.
Eventually, they found a suitable spot, as they nodded in agreement, and signaled to us.
And so, we settled down in a quite nice spot.
I summoned leather seats and paper cups with summoning magic and prepared ourselves to start drinking.
“This beer is quite an expensive one! But since we’re friends. Come, cheers!”
“T-Thank you very much…”
The burly man tilted the bottle of beer and poured it until the very brim. Watching that scene, Lindsey muttered in surprise.
“That bottle… Could it be the highest-grade beer that’s only available in the Illus Kingdom?”
“Oh… you sure have a discerning eye. Miss Purple Maid.”
“Agnes-sama’s trading company has tried to import it many times, but it’s such a precious alcohol that they failed every time.”
For real!
“Um… Is it really okay for us to have this?”
As I asked them with a worried expression, the slender man casually spoke.
“Hey, buddy, don’t hold back, just enjoy the drink. We’ve got top-notch maids around, so it’s almost rude to have such a modest place.”
“…”
I was so moved that I couldn’t find the words to respond.
The burly man poured beer into Lindsey’s and Elyse’s cups, and their cheeks softened. Then, he was about to pour beer into his own and the slender man’s cups, but Elyse, in her excitement, interrupted.
“What a wonderful gathering! We really like it! The beautiful river, the gentle light, and the great atmosphere!”
She enthusiastically gestured with her index finger, pointing out various things.
Lindsey then placed her hand on the bottle of beer held by the burly man and looked at him. He seemed to understand the meaning behind Lindsey’s gaze and shook his head.
“I-It’s fine. We…”
“No. We can’t just passively receive such a wonderful beer. As servants of the Medici family, we can’t bear that.”
“T-Then…”
Looking a bit bewildered, the burly man handed the bottle of beer to Linze. She then poured beer for the two rough-looking adventurers.
“Who could have imagined that… the maids from the duke’s household would be pouring us beer…”
“Truly… life is incredibly unpredictable…”
The two muttered quietly as they looked at the beer in their paper cups.
Well, whether you’re in a completely different world or not, when you have beer in hand, delicious food around, and people to share it with, there’s no choice but to go with it.
I grinned and looked at everyone’s faces. They seemed to understand the meaning behind my expression and returned the same confident grins.
“Well then…”
“Cheers!!!”
The tradition of toasting was the same in both Japan and this other world.
“Well… there’s something I’d like to ask you two.”
“Huh?”
“What is it?”
As we enjoyed the drink and food, the sound of the flowing stream soothing our senses, a question suddenly surfaced in my mind. So, I voiced it out.
“I’d like to know your names.”
“Come to think of it, I didn’t tell you, huh?”
“That’s right.”
They exchanged glances and let out a small sigh. Then they turned to us and spoke.
“I’m Abel.”
“I’m Isaac.”
The big guy was Abel, and the smaller one was Isaac.
“My name is Lindsey.”
“I’m Elyse!!”
The two maids who were enjoying the food and drink beside us also introduced themselves.
In that case, I should also…
“I am Haruto de Medici.”
“Haha! There probably isn’t a single person in this kingdom who doesn’t know your name, bro!”
“That’s right! You’re a hero, after all!”
They gave me a thumbs up and praised me.
But honestly, I didn’t feel particularly pleased.
Because…
“Abel-san and Isaac-san are heroes too.”
Yes, these people are heroes as well.
Without Abel and Isaac’s magic transfer and amplification, I wouldn’t have been able to summon the battleship Yamato. Therefore, they deserve their fair share of recognition.
However, they said,
“We’re just humble adventurers. We’re not as strong as you, bro, and we don’t even have courage.”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
“No, your deeds have been recognized even by King Bern himself! So, if you were to visit the royal palace even now, you would be treated as honored guests and would receive a title of nobility, an Earl, and a substantial reward!!”
I was desperate. It wasn’t even about myself, yet why was I feeling so excited?
However, the two of them shook their heads.
“Why…”
I muttered seriously.
Then, Elyse, who had been listening to our conversation beside us, asked like an inquisitive child.
“Um… Abel-san and Isaac-san, why did you become adventurers?”
After finishing her beer, Lindsey turned a sharp gaze toward the two adventurers.
“I’m very curious as well. I’ve witnessed your actions up close. While it’s undoubtedly true that Abel-sama and Isaac-sama are adventurers when viewed from a distance, their gestures and behavior don’t seem like those of people who have been living this kind of life.”
“!!”
Both Abel-san and Isaac-san tensed up at Lindsey’s observation. However, to divert attention, they quickly drank the beer in their paper cups.
“Oh! I thought that too! It’s like, easy to talk to them… or rather, I feel a sense of familiarity…”
“…”
While they maintained their composure, Lindsey fixed them with a gaze sharper than a guillotine and questioned.
“You two are of noble origin, aren’t you?”
