- Episode 41: Hands on Hands.
Episode 41: Hands on Hands.
Two days later, the day finally arrived.
It was the local fireworks display at a nearby river. It was held on a weekday, and although it was not a big fireworks display, it was said to attract people from all over the town. Many people look forward to it because it’s a lively event with food stalls. Incidentally, for us local teenagers, it is also famous as a romantic event. New couples are born on this day.
Last year, of course, we had nothing to do with such an event, just me, Kazuharu, and Asuka eating food and watching the fireworks. I found out later that Kazuharu had turned down numerous invitations from women to go to the fireworks with us. I don’t think we should think too much about the reason for…
This year, Itsuki Sana will be joining us. And the relationship between the four of us will probably change a little …I don’t know if it’s the right thing to do. But I wanted to move on.
After school, I went home and changed my clothes before heading to the meeting place. The meeting place was in front of the ticket gate of the station nearest the launch site. I suppressed my prevailing feelings and headed for the station.
“Yoo.”
When I arrived at the meeting place, Kazuharu called out to me. Asuka was beside her. It seems that only Sana has not arrived yet.
“Itsuki-san said that she’s coming from the bus, so it might take a little longer.”
“Oh, I see…”
From Sana’s house, it would be more convenient to take the bus to get here.
However, on the day of the fireworks display, the transportation system is usually paralyzed, so it is inevitably delayed. Trains are not delayed that much, but the roads are unusually crowded with cars.
That’s when I thought that she might be significantly late.
“So-sorry! I wonder if I am late⁉”
Sana’s voice came down from behind me.
“No, it’s okay. It was earlier than I thought…”
It was when I turned around while saying that.
There was Sana, dressed in a light pink yukata with polka dots. Perhaps because she was not used to wearing such an outfit, she was squirming and looking embarrassed.
There she was, wearing a light pink yukata with polka dots. It’s a great way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your money.
When I saw her, my thoughts completely short-circuited and I just admired her. The light pink yukata would make a normal girl look a little young, but her blonde hair and aqua blue eyes harmonized well with it, making her look not so young. Another problem is that her style is so good that it intrigues me in many ways.
“I’m sorry, but I think it’s weird. My mom told me to wear it because it’s a special occasion, and she dressed me…”
She glanced at me with dyed cheeks.
Kazuharu and Asuka were all praising it, saying, “It looks good on you!” But the thing is that I can’t say anything about it.
“What do you think about it…. Kaoru-kun? Is it weird?”
Asuka elbowed me in the back. That’s when it hit me. I’m too much of a man to be mute here.
“Well, ….it’s really cute. It looks good on you.”
“Really,…? If so, it’s alright.”
I don’t know what to do anymore because Sana, who is blushing and looking down in embarrassment, is just too cute.
In fact, it would be nice if I could say that she is the cutest of all the people gathered here today, but I am ashamed of myself for not having the courage to say that much.
I don’t know why I feel like Kazuharu is looking at me and Sana like that and clenching his teeth, but I know I shouldn’t worry about that.
“Let’s go to the riverside stall and buy something. If it gets late, the streets will be crowded.”
I nodded at Asuka’s suggestion and we quickly headed towards the fireworks venue.
The road to the venue was more crowded than I expected, and if we weren’t careful we might get separated.
We had to go through a residential area to get to the riverbank where the fireworks were to be held. Normally, the road would be wide enough, but since people from not only this town, but also from all along the route had gathered, it was crowded with people.
As Asuka and Kazuharu were talking to each other, they were walking a little faster. Just when I thought that I would be left behind, I heard a voice next to me, “Ah”. Sana had tripped over her unfamiliar clogs.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m sorry. I knew I shouldn’t have come to such a crowded place in an unfamiliar outfit.”
Sana smiled bitterly and looked at her feet. The clogs must be quite difficult to walk in. I’ve heard that it also hurts your feet.
“Here, …….”
I held my hand out in front of her in a reserved manner.
I didn’t want to suddenly hold her hand and have her scream again in this crowd, “HIAAAAA⁉” or “I’m going to get pregnant!” So I decided to leave it up to her to decide what to do. Besides, it would give me an idea of the success rate after this.
“Ehhh….”
Sana’s eyes widened, and she looked at my hands in surprise.
I couldn’t see the backs of Kazuharu and the others because of the crowd, but that was okay for now.
“Let’s leave them alone and take our time. They’ll probably be at a stall on the riverbank anyway. It won’t matter if we’re a little late, right?”
When I said that, Sana nodded her head and gently took my hand. I let out a small breath of relief. When I glanced at Sana, I saw that her face was dyed red and she was staring at the ground in embarrassment.
I wondered how long it had been since I had held hands with her like this. Probably since the day I introduced Sana to Kazuharu and the others, when we held hands in the hallway before playing catch.
Perhaps it was because she was nervous, but her hands were cold even though it was summer.
“Do tell me If I’m walking too fast.”
“Yeah….”
I laced my hands with Sana’s, intertwined our fingers, and then squeezed her hand. Then we started to walk slowly through the crowd.
