Chapter 34: Helping People…?
After holding hands with Aira—fingers still totally locked together like a couple—we wandered into a random café and grabbed some breakfast.
…That part was fine.
But now, here we were again.
Walking through town.
Still holding hands like that.
Still doing the “lovers’ hold.”
We’re supposed to be parent and child, right?
…Well, I guess super close family might do this kind of thing too.
Yeah. Let’s go with that.
“Aira, just checking, but… is there anywhere you want to go today? Anything you wanna do?”
“As long as I’m with Hiroto, anywhere’s fine.”
Sweet answer…
But yeah, that makes sense.
Aira barely knows anything about this world—aside from the bits and pieces I told her while we were still in the other one.
So it’s not like she could name any places she wants to visit.
“In that case, let’s just wander aroun—”
But before I could even finish that thought, something down the street caught my eye.
…Maybe it’s not super rare these days—honestly, I don’t even know anymore.
But to me?
It definitely stood out.
There was a girl being hassled by some sketchy, flashy-looking guy.
…Stuff like that only happens in manga, right?
I mean, seriously—I always thought it was just fiction.
But here it was. Happening right in front of me.
Guess I’ve got no choice but to step in.
The me from before the whole other-world thing probably would’ve looked the other way.
But after everything I went through over there… that’s not an option anymore.
Even if that sleazy dude tried to throw a punch, I’m confident I could shut it down—smooth and peaceful, no problem.
And more importantly…
The girl clearly looked uncomfortable.
Just as I was about to step in and help the girl, something bizarre happened.
One of the two—the guy—suddenly vanished.
…Or rather, he didn’t exactly disappear…
He was just now lying flat somewhere completely out of her line of sight.
I froze mid-step, caught in the world’s dumbest superhero pose, totally stunned by what just happened.
Then I glanced to my side.
Aira wasn’t there anymore.
I quickly turned back toward where the guy and girl had been.
The girl—clearly freaked out by the guy vanishing into thin air—panicked and bolted.
She ran off without looking back.
And right at that moment, Aira casually appeared next to me again—like she’d never moved at all.
“Uhh… Aira, that was you… wasn’t it?”
I asked because, well… who else could it be?
Not that I was mad or anything.
Sure, the girl got scared, but Aira did technically save her.
It still counted as helping someone.
“…Yeah.”
“I’m not angry or anything, but… why’d you do it? I mean, even if you hadn’t stepped in, I was already planning to help her myself, y’know?”
“That’s exactly why I did it.”
…Huh?
What?
“…Hiroto is mine. If she fell for you, that’d be a problem.”
While I stood there trying to process Aira’s words, she quietly added that last part.
…Okay, hold on. There’s way too much to unpack here.
First off—
I’m not hers.
I mean, sure, in the sense that I’m her parent, you could technically say I “belong” to her…
But I seriously doubt that’s what she meant.
And secondly—
It’s not like people are gonna fall for me that easily, right?
…Well, whatever.
At the end of the day, no matter why she did it, she still ended up helping someone.
The guy wasn’t dead or anything.
Didn’t even look hurt, really.
So yeah. All’s well that ends well.
“Good girl, good job.”
With that, I gave her a gentle pat on the head.
“Really? I did good? You’re happy too, Hiroto?”
“Hmm? Yeah—I’m happy.”
I mean, come on.
What kind of parent wouldn’t be proud when their daughter helps someone?
