Chapter 29: Being a Good Little Brother (2)
“I’m home~!”
Right after I promised Aira I’d stay with her as long as she wanted, Nee-san walked through the door—just in time for dinner to be ready.
…I knew everything would be fine, but all of a sudden, I started feeling kind of nervous.
“Welcome back, Nee-san. Um… you’re always working hard, and I just wanted to show some appreciation, so… I made dinner tonight. Was that okay? I didn’t mess anything up, right?”
“Huh? You made dinner, Hiroto~?!”
Nee-san’s eyes went wide with surprise.
“Y-Yeah.”
“Of course it’s not a problem! I’m really happy—thank you~…But wait, when did you learn how to cook?”
“…I looked stuff up on my phone and gave it my best shot.”
Which wasn’t a lie.
I really did check recipes online.
Obviously, I couldn’t exactly tell her I learned to cook in another world… for the daughter I raised there.
“Mmm~ Thanks, Hiroto. That really means a lot to me.”
While I was still thinking about all that, she smiled warmly and gave me a gentle pat on the head.
…Man, this is kind of embarrassing.
Especially since Aira’s probably right here, watching all of this.
…Not that I’m gonna stop her or anything.
It’s been eight years since I last got a head pat from Nee-san, so…
Yeah. It’s not weird. Probably.
“I’m gonna go change real quick~ Since you went through the trouble of making dinner, I gotta eat it while it’s still warm~”
“It’s already set up.”
Relieved that Nee-san was genuinely happy about the whole thing, I quietly got back to work—lining up the dishes and setting out the chopsticks.
“Thanks for waiting~!”
And right as I finished getting everything ready, Nee-san came back in fresh clothes—perfect timing.
““Let’s eat!””
We said it together and started digging in.
“Mmm! This is great, Hiroto. I never would’ve guessed it was your first time cooking!”
“Glad to hear that.”
…Technically, it wasn’t my first time.
But there’s no way Nee-san could’ve known that, so I kept my expression calm and just went along with it.
“Thanks for the meal~! Seriously, it was delicious, Hiroto.”
After we finished eating, Nee-san gave me a big smile and said that again.
“Yeah. …Starting now, I might not be able to cook every day, but I want to help take some of the load off you. So I’ll start making dinner more often.”
“Aww, that’s sweet—But really, I don’t mind handling it myself, y’know~?”
“I want to do it.”
“Well then, if you’re not too busy, I’ll let you take over sometimes~”
“Yeah. Next time, I’ll make sure to give you a heads-up first.”
After that little exchange, I started feeling kind of embarrassed for some reason…
So I headed off to the bathroom to get the water running.
“You can go in first~”
When I asked Nee-san if she wanted to take her bath now, that’s what she called back.
…That was nice of her, but it also brought one very specific concern to the front of my mind.
Was I… going to end up bathing with Aira again?
…W-Well, look. It’s fine.
Same as yesterday—I’ll just do my best not to look her way, and we’ll get through it.
There’s no real way around it anyway, so…
I took a deep breath and gave myself a little mental pep talk.
