- Chapter 11 - The Magic Guild and the Adventurer's Guild
Firstly, Mei and I opened the door and stepped inside. The door rubbed against the floor, emitting an unpleasant noise.
The inside was just as shabby as the outside, if not worse. It was moldy and cobwebs were everywhere.
“Is this really a guild? Is there anyone here at all?”
“Master, there’s someone at the counter.”
The place was neglected and in disarray, which was disheartening, but upon Mei’s prompting, I saw a person at the counter. Perhaps a receptionist? They were slumped over the counter, seemingly unaware of our presence.
“Hey, wake up.”
The person was breathing, not dead, just asleep, so I shook their shoulder to wake them up.
“Hmm…”
The person who lifted their head was a young Human woman, about 20 years old, with messy auburn hair and thick, round glasses. She wore a blue robe.
“Um, oh! Are you here for herb gathering? I’m sorry, I don’t have today’s portion yet!”
“? What are you talking about? I’m here to register a magical device.”
“Wha? Magic, huh? A child?”
“Who are you calling a child! How rude!”
“Ah!”
I slammed my hand on the counter, causing the woman to jump back. How impertinent.
“Master, it can’t be helped given your appearance.”
“Ugh, that’s hard to hear…”
Indeed, I look just like a child, and currently, I am concealing that I am a High Elf. By Human standards, I am nothing but a child.
“I’m sorry for startling you.”
“No, I should be the one apologizing. So, you mentioned a magical device?”
Mei bowed respectfully. To thrive in human society, it seems necessary to be considerate of others.
Well, let’s get to the point.
“Yes. I want you to look at my magical device.”
“Ah, I see. You’re a mage’s apprentice then, sent on an errand?”
“Who said I’m an apprentice!”
“Wha! No, you’re not?”
“Master is actually a magic device artisan.”
“Oh wow, a child artisan, that’s impressive!”
“Stop calling me a child!”
“Ah, um, you’re kind of scary…”
The woman brought her hands up to her chin, her voice trembling like a frightened puppy. What an unsettling person…
“Anyway, I need you to register this magical device.”
“Oh, um, about that, we can’t actually register magical devices here.”
“What? Can’t? What are you talking about?”
What does that mean? This is a Magic Guild, right? Surely, registration should be done here.
“Um, you really don’t know?”
“What now?”
“Registration of magical devices is now handled by the Adventurer’s Guild…”
“What! What does that mean! What are you planning!”
“Ah, no, that’s why… we no longer handle anything related to magical devices…”
What? That doesn’t make sense. It’s a joke, right? A Magic Guild that can’t register magical devices?
“So, who manages it then? You must manage registered magical devices here, right?”
“No, that too was transferred to the Adventurer’s Guild four years ago…”
“What the…?”
I looked up to the sky, bewildered. I had been concerned that the Adventurer’s Guild was becoming too powerful, but to think they’d take over magical device management…
“I’m sorry for any trouble.”
“It’s not something to apologize for. We just weren’t aware. Well, no use bothering you then.”
Though reluctant, if the Magic Guild no longer handled it, I had no choice but to head to the Adventurer’s Guild.
I promptly left the Magic Guild and made my way to the Adventurer’s Guild.
“However, Mei, it used to be that the Magic Guild handled magical device registration, right?”
“Yes, until just a few years ago.”
“Just a few years ago, but that girl said it had been four years since it changed to the Adventurer’s Guild. When exactly was that?”
“It was about ten years ago.”
Ten years ago… that explains it.
“Mei, indeed ten years is but a moment for us Elves, but for Humans, it’s a significant amount of time.”
“I see, I shall be more mindful in the future.”
Well, Mei has mostly spent time in my mansion. She may come down to the town occasionally, but her sense of time is still largely based on Elf standards.
Now, the location of the Adventurer’s Guild… I don’t need magical devices to find it, let’s just move quickly.
“Good grief, the guilds are quite different from each other.”
The Magic Guild was quietly situated on the outskirts of town, while the Adventurer’s Guild faced a major street with a respectable exterior. The town had many stone buildings, but the Adventurer’s Guild was a rather splendid red brick building, quite large with a spacious yard and even a garden. It was a three-story building, not just tall but also broad.
The guild’s sign was impressive, and the entrance featured large double doors, making me almost laugh at the contrast with the previous guild.
Upon entering with Mei, I found the interior quite spacious, easily accommodating about fifty people.
There were five receptionists at the counter in the back, some attending to adventurers, while others were available.
It was a bit early for adventurers to return, but soon enough, those who had finished their quests would likely flood in. It was best to handle our business quickly.
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, how cute. What’s up, little boy?”
Again with the child treatment here.
“Hey, when did this place start babysitting kids?”
“And that kid’s got some nerve, walking around with a sexy maid like that,” remarked a crass adventurer from a distance. As expected, the Adventurer’s Guild also had its fair share of misinformed folks.
“I heard that this is where magical devices are registered.”
“Magic device registration? Oh, that’s done on the second floor… who’s going to register it?”
“Me! Fine. It’s upstairs then. Excuse us.”
I turned my back on the puzzled receptionist and Mei and I headed to the second floor. There, a blonde, blue-eyed receptionist sat at the counter. The area was quiet, and she yawned openly before her piercing blue eyes fixed on me.
“This isn’t a playground for children, you know.”
Her tone was exasperatingly dismissive. I was getting used to it, but it was still frustrating how people made assumptions based on appearance.
“I’m not here to play. I came to register a magical device.”
“A magical device registration?”
“Yes. You do that here, right?”
“Yes, but who? The maid? You don’t look like a magic device artisan.”
“That’s what I’ve been telling you, it’s me!”
“Huh?”
The receptionist furrowed her golden eyebrows in confusion. Despite being a customer, I was met with poor treatment.
“I don’t have time for jokes.”
“This is no joke!”
She had appeared idle until a moment ago.
“Fine, I have some time now, so let’s deal with this.”
“That’s not something you say to someone in front of you…”
“Alright, what kind of magical device do you have?”
Her lack of enthusiasm was palpable. Could she really handle this?
“First, this one.”
“Which one?”
“This, this bracelet!”
“Oh, that. What about it?”
I was growing weary…
“This bracelet is an Infinite Storage Infringering. It’s imbued with a space-time magic formula that allows the wearer to store items inside it by thinking about them. The capacity is limitless.”
“So, you’re saying you can stuff whatever you want into this bracelet?”
“That’s the basic idea, yes.”
In this area, where neither Myrfl nor magic vehicles had penetrated, this device might fetch a good price. Registering it couldn’t hurt.
“Pfft.”
“Huh?”
“Ahahaha! An Infinite Storage Ring, that’s hilarious!”
The receptionist began banging on the counter, laughing hysterically. What was so funny about that?
“Haha, that’s funny. What else do you have?”
“Other than that?”
Could it be that something as standard as an Infinite Storage Ring wasn’t enough for registration?
“What about the Magic Self-Propelled Carriage, the MagiLoader?”
“A magic what?”
“This is essentially a carriage that moves by magic instead of horses. It can travel freely on roads, much faster than a horse.”
This was something not yet seen in the town. Surely, it would be eligible for registration.
“A carriage that runs on magic without horses? Ahahaha! That’s amazing! If such a thing really existed, it would revolutionize travel from city to city!”
“Right, so can it be registered?”
“Ha, ha, ha, are you kidding? Register? That’s just a child’s fantasy, it’s impossible.”
“A child’s fantasy?”
“Yep, it’s going to get busy soon, so go play house at home or have your maid entertain you. Shoo, shoo.”
Her dismissive gesture, like shooing away a stray cat, made something inside me snap.
“Don’t mess with me! That’s it, Mei! Remember, we’re never registering anything here again!”
“Sure, sure, just don’t come back, it’s too much trouble.”
What an infuriating woman! I stormed out of the guild immediately.
