Chapter 2: Sibling Dinner Table
My house isn’t as big as Kirino-san’s, but it’s a decently spacious single-family home.
With five siblings, it has to be this big.
“I’m home!”
“Welcome back, big brother.”
Ayuka, the third daughter, greeted me when I got home.
Ayuka is about my height, has blonde hair tied back, and always looks at me with slightly judging eyes, like a girl from a doujinshi.
“Big brother, you came home pretty late today. Did something happen?”
“N-No, nothing happened. I just hung out with a friend for a bit.”
I lied on the spot.
I could’ve told the truth, but they probably wouldn’t believe me anyway.
“Hmm, a friend, huh…”
Ayuka gave me a look that said she didn’t buy it at all.
What? Is it that hard to believe I hung out with a friend?
Okay, yeah, I’ve barely ever come home late from hanging out with friends… or maybe never.
“Whatever. I’ll let it slide for now. Anyway, Rinka-neesan already made dinner, so eat.”
“Got it.”
I walked into the living room.
Rinka, the second daughter, always makes dinner.
I really owe her a lot.
She’s super responsible and handles chores without cutting corners.
She even makes breakfast and our lunch bentos.
“Welcome back, big brother.”
“You’re late, Kiyoto.”
When I entered the living room, Rinka and Fuzuha, the youngest, were already seated.
For some reason, in the Nuregami household, everyone except the eldest sister has to eat dinner together.
Rinka made that rule.
“Come on, sit down already.”
I put my bag down and sat next to Rinka as she told me.
The seating order goes by age: Fuzuha in middle school second year, Ayuka in middle school third year, Rinka in high school first year, and me in high school third year.
“Hey, Kiyoto. Before we eat dinner, don’t you have something to say?”
Rinka, with her short black hair and androgynous face, prompted me to apologize.
“Uh, sorry for being late. I was hanging out with a friend, so I lost track of time.”
“You? With a friend? That’s a joke, right?”
Fuzuha, who’s petite with brown hair tied in a bun, cut in.
“Come on, there’s no way a normal high school guy like me doesn’t have any friends.”
“You’re not normal, big brother.”
Ayuka muttered that with a sigh.
Can’t these guys say something nice about me for once?
“I don’t know if you were really with a friend, but next time you’re late, make sure to let us know.”
“G-Got it.”
Rinka is great at taking care of us, but she’s strict about house rules and behavior.
She even sets curfews for Ayuka and Fuzuha, who are still in middle school.
Because Rinka’s been doing kendo since she was little, I’ve developed a bias that kendo girls always talk like guys.
“Let’s eat.”
“””Let’s eat.”””
We all put our hands together and started eating.
Rinka’s cooking is usually like a diner meal.
She changes the miso soup or type of fish daily so we don’t get bored.
The portions are just right for each of us.
I’m a light eater, so even this amount is tough for me.
But there’s no way I can leave any food behind.
“Hey, Kiyoto, don’t put your elbows on the table.”
“S-Sorry.”
“Fuzuha, don’t slurp your miso soup so loudly.”
“Okay, Rinka-nee.”
As you can see, Rinka is strict about table manners too.
If I left any food, she might actually grab her kendo stick.
“””…”””
In our house, talking during meals is considered bad manners.
So, an awkward silence hung over the table.
Wait a second.
Isn’t there a one-hour anime special I wanted to watch airing right now?
Crap, I forgot to record it!
“Uh, can I turn on the TV for a bit?”
“Do you think I’d allow that?”
Yeah, figured.
Guess I’ll wait and buy the DVD later.
The table went back to silence.
“Thanks for the meal.”
Ayuka finished eating first.
She eats so neatly that not a single grain of rice is left in her bowl.
“…”
But Ayuka didn’t get up from her seat.
That’s because of our old-fashioned family rule: no one can clear their dishes until everyone finishes eating.
“Ugh, hurry up and finish already.”
Ayuka grumbled, annoyed at the three of us still eating—specifically at me, the slowest eater.
“Ayuka, don’t rush people just because you’re done.”
“…”
Rinka scolded her, but Ayuka just ignored it.
Lately, Ayuka’s been clashing with the family a lot.
She’s probably fed up with Rinka’s strict rules.
What should I do?
Maybe as the eldest brother, I should show some authority and tell Rinka to ease up on the rules.
“Hey, Rin—”
“Shut up and eat.”
…Am I really cut out to be the eldest brother?

Rinka is badass 😭
