Chapter 12: Joint Class (2)
“Haa, haa, haa.”
I never thought a two-thousand-meter run would be this tough.
It felt like I ran more than ten laps already.
I don’t hate endurance running, and compared to ball sports, it’s not so bad.
I just need to run.
But even I wanted to switch this class to soccer because the heat made two thousand meters brutal today.
It seemed everyone else felt the same; even the usual fast-paced popular kids were out of breath, and the whole class was slow.
Except for one person.
“Kiyoto-kun!? You look like you’re about to collapse!”
Someone called from behind, and a third person’s hands supported my posture.
“Th-Thanks… Kirino-san.”
“You don’t need to force yourself to talk.”
Kirino-san alone didn’t slow down at all.
She wasn’t out of breath and barely even sweated.
But every time she passed me on a lap, she fixed my posture, so my time would likely be worse than usual.
“Maybe you should’ve sat this one out today.”
I thought so too.
I was causing Kirino-san some trouble, after all.
I debated quitting now, but every time I passed the first-years timing us at the lap line, I felt silent pressure.
I didn’t have the energy to look their way, but that pressure made me hesitate to drop out.
“Senpai, good job!”
“Wow, senpai, forty seconds faster than me!”
“Huh? Aren’t you slow, senpai? You’re in a sports club, but slower than me, a non-athlete. Aren’t you embarrassed?”
Those were the encouraging words from the juniors waiting for us after we finished the two-thousand-meter run.
As for me—
“Uh, R-Rinka, h-how did I do…?”
“…”
Rinka glared back and forth between the timer and me.
Well, no surprise there.
I timed Rinka, and honestly, she was faster than any guy in Class 3-E.
Though, the only guys’ times I knew were Kouta Akasata’s and that friendly, not-so-noticeable popular guy who talks to everyone equally.
“I know you’re not in any clubs. But even considering that—”
Rinka started to say something but stopped herself.
Huh? What? What’s wrong?
“No, I should just praise you for finishing the run safely.”
!?
Rinka openly praising me…?
What’s going on?
This was as impossible as me going a week without indulging.
“By the way, are you feeling okay today? Your face looks—”
Another impossible thing—Rinka worrying about my health—when—
“Kiyoto-kun!”
Kirino-san’s voice called me again, and before I knew it, she was between me and Rinka.
“Good job…”
Rinka froze, looking at me, and Kirino-san stiffened.
“What’s wrong, Kiyoto-kun!? Your face looks awful!”
Oh, that’s what it was.
Come to think of it, my nausea had been getting worse.
“Let’s go to the nurse’s office.”
Kirino-san put her arm around my shoulder.
But Rinka stopped her.
“Sorry, he’s my brother. I’ll take him to the nurse’s office.”
Rinka put her arm around my other shoulder.
“Um, you’re Kiyoto-kun’s sister, right? I’m his classmate, so I’ll take him to the nurse’s office. You can go back to class.”
Kirino-san gently urged Rinka to step back.
“No, you can return to class. I failed to notice my brother’s condition, so I’ll take responsibility and bring him to the nurse’s office.”
I never thought Rinka would say something like that.
I discovered another one of her charms.
“It’s not your fault as his sister. If I had insisted he sit out, this wouldn’t have happened.”
“No, I caused this by forcing him to warm up. So leave this to me.”
The warm-up was basically nothing compared to the run, so that wasn’t the reason.
But neither of them showed any sign of backing down.
If they didn’t hurry, I’d really throw up…
“Hey, Nuregami, help out a bit.”
The teacher called my last name.
Huh? Not me… right?
“See, the teacher’s calling you. Leave this to me.”
“…”
Rinka stared silently at Kirino-san.
Without saying anything, Rinka went to the teacher.
“Kiyoto-kun, can you walk?”
“A little…”
In the end, Kirino-san practically carried me to the nurse’s office.

Chapter 13: Sisters’ Fight
“I’m home…”
I opened the front door after returning from school.
After sixth period, I was taken to the nurse’s office, but they said I didn’t have a fever or anything.
My bad complexion was probably just from overeating lunch and feeling nauseous.
“…”
Rinka stood at the entrance, which was unusual.
When I came home late, Fuzuha or Ayuka usually greeted me.
Since Rinka was in the kendo club, she often got home later than me.
“…How’s your condition?”
“Huh?”
Did I hear that right?
It felt like Rinka just asked me about my condition.
“I’m asking how your condition is.”
“Uh, the nurse checked me, and they said nothing’s wrong…”
Rinka was worried about my condition!?
Now I was starting to worry about her.
“…I see.”
Rinka nodded once and straightened her posture.
“I’m sorry about today.”
Then, she bowed and apologized to me.
…Did something bad happen at school?
What’s wrong? Want your big brother to listen?
“No, it’s fine, it’s fine. Nothing was wrong anyway.”
Don’t take it so seriously, I thought, wanting to pat her shoulder, but I didn’t have the courage for that yet.
Rinka raised her face, still looking stern, but it seemed a bit brighter.
“Dinner’s ready, so sit down quickly.”
She turned her back and headed to the living room.
I followed her back and went to the living room too.
“…”
At the dining table, Fuzuha and Ayuka sat, but unlike Rinka, they looked clearly upset.
They weren’t just glaring at me… this time, it was at both me and Rinka.
“…You’re late.”
Ayuka spat out her irritation.
“S-Sorry. I wasn’t feeling well at school today.”
“That’s not what I’m asking. Why did it take you so long to get here from opening the front door?”
Ayuka pressed further.
Huh? It didn’t take that long, did it?
Rinka just apologized to me, so it was probably less than three minutes.
“Hey, that doesn’t matter now. Let’s eat already.”
My dinner portion was smaller than usual today.
Even so, I wasn’t confident I’d finish first.
From there, we started eating in silence again.
But today, the air felt even more tense.
In this kind of atmosphere, people say you naturally eat faster, but that didn’t happen at all.
It seemed I was the only one, though, because Ayuka had already finished eating.
She acted casual while trying to clear her bowl.
But, of course, doing that caused—
“Hey, Ayuka, I always say to clear the bowls after everyone finishes.”
Rinka stopped her.
Normally, Ayuka would make a face but reluctantly obey, but not today.
“Hey, Rinka-neesan. Don’t you think waiting for everyone to finish is kind of stupid?”
“What did you say?”
Rinka’s voice dropped two octaves at Ayuka’s words.
“I always thought this, but Nii-san eats so slowly. Waiting for him is such a waste of time, isn’t it?”
Half of me was hurt by the casual insult, and half was excited.
“Anyway, from today, I’ll clear my own dishes as soon as I’m done. Oh, and if you don’t like that, you don’t have to make my share anymore, Rinka-neesan. I’ll just eat out with friends.”
Ayuka went that far!?
“…”
Rinka said nothing.
She just stared at Ayuka silently.
“Well, I’m going back to my room.”
Ayuka, looking fed up, cleared her bowl and went upstairs.
“Hey, Ayuka-nee!”
“Fuzuha, you still have miso soup left.”
Rinka stopped Fuzuha, who tried to chase after her.
“But Ayuka-nee…”
“Just finish eating. I won’t forgive leftovers.”
“Okay…”
The dining table went quiet again.
During all this, I couldn’t do anything, but well, what can you do?
