Chapter 1-28: A Quiet House for Now
“Your sister is quite the character.”
“Yeah, I have a hard time every day.”
“Haha.”
“Hey! You two! Keep your distance! No improper relationships allowed!”
“Huh?! What’s improper about this?!”
“Rafio, what’s for dinner tonight?”
“Don’t come over here! Don’t try to tickle me! I’m using a knife! Yuuma, keep an eye on her!”
“I really like egg dishes! Eggs are great, aren’t they? Especially the ones laid by fluffy birds!”
“Listen to me! Besides, most eggs that you do eat come from those birds!”
The kitchen was lively. It was kind of fun.
Rafio’s chicken rice was changed to omurice at Tsumugi’s request, but Rafio still didn’t have the skill to wrap it perfectly in egg. The dish ended up with scrambled eggs on top of the chicken rice, but it was quite good.
A little while later, I managed to send Tsumugi back home with Rafio reluctantly accompanying her, and also escorted Haruka home. Haruka’s house was nearby, about a ten-minute walk. Since she started using a wheelchair, her house had been remodeled for accessibility.
“Your sister is really unique.”
“Yeah. She’s noisy every morning. But she’s my only family left.”
“I see. Your only family. Hey Yuuma, if you ever need help with anything around the house, just let me know! I’ll help out with whatever I can!”
“Oh, okay.”
I could think of plenty of things that are troublesome, like my sister and the fights. For the latter, I do need Haruka’s strength.
“Count on me! I’ll fight properly. And you know, during the day, it’s usually just you and me together, right? I might have more chances to fight alongside you than your sister does!”
“That might be true.”
I might need to think about what to do if enemies appear during class.
We arrived at Haruka’s house. She suggested I come inside, but I politely declined. We waved goodbye, and I headed back to the apartment. Aina was at the table with a beer and some dried squid.
“Welcome back, Yuuma.”
“I’m back. So you’re drinking after all.”
She hadn’t had any alcohol at dinner earlier because of Haruka and Tsumugi, but as soon as they left, she got it out.
“I can’t handle things without drinking.”
“Do what you want. Where’s Rafio?”
“Over there.”
The small fairy version of Rafio was leaning against an unopened pudding cup. It seemed like he was too exhausted to even eat. Was dealing with Tsumugi that tiring?
“I can’t take it anymore. We need to do something about that devil. Exterminate her or something…”
“Is it that bad?”
“Feed me pudding.”
“Eat it yourself.”
“Ugh.”
He slumped onto the table and didn’t move.
Then I noticed Aina looking at me, smiling.
“What is it?”
“Nothing, really.”
“It’s making me curious.”
“I just thought it suddenly got quiet. Tsumugi went home, you went to escort Haruka, and Rafio is out cold.”
“It was lively with the five of us here.”
I meant the time when Haruka and the others were here, but Aina might have been thinking about when there were five of us in our family.
“I prefer it when it’s lively. So I was really relieved when you came back.”
“I just went out for a bit. You’re exaggerating.”
“Maybe.”
Aina took a sip of her beer, seemingly to hide her embarrassment. She didn’t need to pour it into a glass for me; she could just drink it from the can.
“By the way, I caught some news earlier, and there was already something about Liner.”
“That was quick.”
“For the past few days, the news has been all about magical girls and monsters. No one knows our identities, but everyone knows about us.”
“It’s a strange feeling.”
“Yeah. But it’s kind of exciting.”
“Exciting?”
“Sharing a secret feels fun, doesn’t it? A bit of thrill, a bit of guilt.”
Like the enjoyment of organizing a secret society.
“It’s a bit lonely that it’s not just a secret between you and me anymore.”
“Rafio’s been with us from the start.”
“Rafio doesn’t count.”
What kind of logic is that?
“Anyway, we share a big secret. Our group has grown, but it started with us. And also, I spend more time with you than anyone else, right?”
“Huh?”
“I mean, we’re siblings. I’m not with you when I’m at work, but we live together. If an enemy appears, we can fight together! Even during the day, I’ll come running! So rely on me.”
“Oh.”
She’s competing. Trying to show her importance on the same topic Tsumugi used earlier.
“I’m going to watch the news.”
I reached for the remote and turned on the TV.
“Hey! Don’t ignore me!”
“Okay, okay. I’ll rely on you, sis.”
“That sounded half-hearted! Show more respect for your sister!”
The news was featuring a commentator talking about the second magical girl. An older man, posing as an expert. What kind of expert on magical girls is that?
The scene switched to people on the street sharing their thoughts. They wanted us to protect them, were curious about our identities, speculated if we were secretly in cahoots with the monsters, and demanded we stop the monsters before they even appeared.
They’re asking the impossible. And stop accusing us without proof.
Some people declared they were fans of the magical girls. It seemed we had support from both men and women. With multiple magical girls appearing, fan factions had emerged. Some favored the pink one, others the yellow one.
We were being treated like idols.
