Chapter 1-2: Mysterious Otherworlder
My ordinary life was disrupted on an evening when the forecasted rain arrived.
As usual, today’s classes ended without any incident, and I was preparing dinner at home when my phone rang. It was from Aina.
“Yuuma! It’s raining! Come pick me up! I forgot my umbrella!”
“You didn’t forget it; you never planned to bring one in the first place.”
This idiot never thinks about checking the weather forecast or carrying a folding umbrella.
“No, I really forgot it! The last time it rained, I decided I would always carry an umbrella! It just happens I just forgot about it today!”
The next day, she had completely forgotten her resolution and hadn’t remembered it until today. She definitely just never planned to bring one.
“Hey Yuuma! Come pick me up at the station! Please!”
“Get wet and come home.”
“How can you be so cruel to your beloved sister!?”
“Alright, alright. I’ll come get you, so just wait quietly.”
I didn’t want to go, but if I didn’t, Aina would keep causing a scene at the station.
It would be a nuisance to others. There’s a small commercial building, a shopping center, and a shopping street with bars near the station, so there’s a fair amount of foot traffic.
I grabbed two plastic umbrellas and left the apartment. Seeing the pouring rain, I understood why she was reluctant to come home drenched.
The station was a short walk in the opposite direction of the bus stop I use to go to school in the morning.
There’s a bus stop at the station too, but it’s not far enough to bother taking the bus, so Aina walks to the station every morning.
“Yuuma, you came! As expected, my little brother is really a cute sister-loving brother!”
“Shut up. Don’t hug me. Let go. Stop it.”
Aina spotted me inside the station and ran over to hug me.
She truly dotes on me. I’m happy that we’re close, but her expressions of affection are silly.
Imagine how a high school boy feels when his sister hugs him at a station where his acquaintances might see him.
Aina is only slightly shorter than me, so we might be mistaken for a couple. Though, with her in a suit, I doubt it.
“Hehe. I knew you’d come, Yuuma.”
“Let’s go home.”
“Oh, you’re embarrassed. So cute.”
“Nee-san, you’ve got a nice figure. How about becoming a magical girl?”
“Huh?”
A childlike voice suddenly interrupted our conversation.
It was indeed a child.
A boy about ten or eleven was looking up at us.
He had a strikingly handsome face, uncharacteristic of Japanese people, and his hair was pure white, making him stand out.
This boy said,
“How about becoming a magical girl?”
I didn’t understand what he was getting at. Was he talking about an anime or something?
“Um, Yuuma, do you know him?”
“Nope.”
Aina looked at me with a troubled face. I was just as puzzled. Was this kid just trying to play with us?
I didn’t have time for this, so I tried to figure out how to get rid of him.
“I see. I took a friendly human form, but you don’t believe me. Hey, boy. Give me your hand.”
“Huh?!”
“Eek!”
His imperious tone made me respond more harshly than I intended. The kid recoiled in fear.
“No, Yuuma. He’s just a kid, be gentler.”
“Y-Yeah, listen to her, boy! Now, just give me your hand!”
“Hey, don’t get cocky.”
“Eek!”
When Aina showed a bit of kindness, he hid behind her and continued to scold me. What was with this kid?
“So, Yuuma… he asked for your hand, right? Like this?”
Aina, instead of me, extended her hand to the boy.
Immediately, he jumped lightly, and his body began to shrink and transform.
The boy vanished, and in Aina’s palm was a small, four-legged creature. It was covered in white fur, had long pointed ears, and slightly upturned eyes.
At first, I thought it was a rabbit. But it also looked like a cat or a fox.
It had a small bag around its neck.
Sitting in Aina’s hands, it was just the right size. Its weight made her hands sink slightly.
“Hey. Once again, how about becoming a magical girl?”
It spoke in the same voice as the boy.
“Wh-What!?”
Aina screamed in astonishment, but I was just as shocked.
But I understood this wasn’t something to discuss openly in a crowded place, especially not with Aina, who might shout at any moment.
If a classmate saw me arguing with a stuffed animal-like creature, my school life would be over.
“This way.”
“Ugh.”
I grabbed the white creature and pulled Aina along, running to a secluded corner of the station.
I heard the creature’s pained cry, but I didn’t care.
“Hey. What are you? Who are you?”
“Let go, boy! I don’t want to talk to you!”
It struggled in my hand. When I loosened my grip, it immediately escaped and jumped onto my head.
“Once again, how about becoming a magical girl?”
“Um… first, can you tell me your name?”
“Don’t entertain him, sis. Let’s just drop this thing off at the animal shelter.”
“Eek!”
“Come on. Just listen to him. So, what should we call you?”
“My name is Rafio. I’m from another world.”
“Another world, huh.”
Aina repeated the unbelievable term “another world” with a weak voice.
Arro Note: Nee-san can be roughly translated to big sister, but it is also sometimes used to refer to an older woman, who is kind of a stranger to you. They use it on someone they don’t know the name of. Using something in English while keeping the Japanese atmosphere was kind of hard so I decided to use that instead and just explain it.
