Chapter 1-13: Haruka Has Potential
During class, Rafio stayed quiet in the bag. He seemed to be looking at something on my smartphone.
Don’t use it too much. It wastes the battery and data. I told him.
When lunchtime arrived, I quickly grabbed Rafio and ran to the back of the school building.
“Yuuma! Let’s make that girl a magical girl! She has the potential!”
“Seriously… No, that’s impossible. You saw her, right? She’s missing a leg.”
“No problem. When she transforms, it’ll grow back.”
“Seriously?”
“Transformation makes a person’s body the best it can be!”
Even an old lady with a bent back can fight, as he said.
“She doesn’t seem to mind her life in a wheelchair. But she must want to run on her own legs again! Let’s make that dream come true!”
“That’s…”
It seemed plausible. If Haruka got such an offer, she’d likely accept it without hesitation.
I understood. Considering Haruka’s feelings, I should invite her to be a magical girl.
“Let me think about it.”
“There’s no time to think! We need to find two more magical girls right away! Preferably from this school!”
“You seem desperate.”
I understood that keeping our activities secret would be easier if the magical girls were people Aina and I knew. The fewer people who knew the secret, the better.
But why did it have to be from this school?
“We need to find them today! Before we have to deal with that fluff maniac again, we need to fill the magical girl slots.”
“Are you really that desperate to not have her as a magical girl?”
The fluff maniac referred to Tsumugi. Rafio seemed eager to avoid involving her as a magical girl.
What a personal reason.
“I absolutely refuse to make that devil an ally! She’s too young to be a magical girl anyway! It’s dangerous to bring an elementary school student into battle! I’m saying this from a humane perspective!”
You said this morning that an elementary schooler might be more suitable.
“Fine. I’m going to eat lunch in the cafeteria, so be quiet until then.”
“Alright. Just understand that we can’t let an elementary schooler fight.”
To be honest, I didn’t want high schoolers to fight either. Especially not Haruka.
And I didn’t want my sister fighting either.
“Yuuma! Let’s go home together!”
Today’s classes, including the physical measurement in gym class, went smoothly, and it was now after school.
During the day, I didn’t talk to Haruka. We each had other friends.
Rafio had scoped out a few female students who seemed suitable, but I firmly refused to let him approach them.
As soon as homeroom ended, Haruka spoke to me.
It wasn’t unusual. Our houses were close, and we took the bus home together. Neither of us was in any clubs, so unless we had plans, we’d go home together.
It was more convenient for Haruka. She needed help with slopes and getting on and off the bus.
But today, I wanted to avoid it.
“Uh, I have some errands to run. Sorry.”
I put on an apologetic face and declined. I didn’t really have any errands; I just didn’t want to deal with Rafio being noisy.
Actually, he was already noisy, struggling in the bag. My grip was starting to weaken.
“I see… Are you going on a date or something?”
“No. Why would you think that?”
“Just kidding. You don’t have a girlfriend anyway. See you tomorrow!”
Haruka said something that irked me as she maneuvered her wheelchair out of the classroom. I also left and headed to the back of the school building again.
“Phew! What are you doing? I was just about to recruit her!”
“I just don’t feel right about it.”
“Is it hard to explain the situation? I can do it.”
“It’s not that. I don’t like the idea of classmates fighting monsters.”
During break time, I checked some news sites and social media on my phone. Discussions about yesterday’s incident were everywhere.
Many were cheering for the mysterious girl who defeated the monster. People were afraid of another monster attack and were pinning their hopes on the unknown magical girl.
As I said this morning, they should rely on the police or the Self-Defense Forces. If it were unknown adults fighting, I could support them without worry.
“Am I being irresponsible? I’m already involved in the fight to save the world, but I’m not willing to engage fully.”
But involving my wheelchair-bound classmate or my sister, who was doing her best for me, was hard to accept.
My sister had already shown her resolve to fight, but I still didn’t want to burden someone who overslept and almost missed school today.
“…Alright. Take your time to think. But Yuuma, I need to go to a large grocery store.”
“Why so suddenly?”
“Aina asked me to cook. Even if I’m not great at it, I need to try. I researched while you were in class.”
“So, that’s why you were on my phone.”
“I was checking magical girl topics too. I even posted some encouraging words. It’s important for the world to recognize magical girls.”
That was one of Rafio’s goals.
“And I hinted that there are three magical girls, they’re all beautiful, and none are elementary schoolers.”
“Don’t post unnecessary things.”
