Chapter 1-12: Haruka is a Cheerful Fool
While holding down Rafio, who was struggling in the bag, I tried to change the subject by asking a question.
“By the way, Haruka, why don’t you use a prosthetic leg?”
If someone is paraplegic, a wheelchair makes sense. But if the loss is due to amputation, a prosthetic leg seems viable. It’s not easy, but you can walk with one. Exercising should also be easier with a prosthetic.
“Ah, yeah. I do want to use a prosthetic leg eventually. But in my case, I don’t have a knee left. Even with a prosthetic leg, walking is really hard and requires a lot of training. Whether you have a functional knee makes a big difference.”
Haruka said this while moving her left leg, which was visible under her skirt. I averted my eyes as her skirt moved, almost revealing what was underneath.
“You’re not the type to avoid training, Haruka.”
“Well, yeah. But there’s another reason. I’m still growing.”
“Huh?”
“I’m still growing!”
“Yeah, I got that. But why does it matter?”
“Prosthetic legs are made to fit a person’s body, right? The part that connects to the leg, its thickness, and the height of the remaining knee need to match. Basically, it has to fit my height.”
“I understand that.”
“And I’m still growing. I’ll keep getting taller and develop a nice model-like figure. If I get a prosthetic now, it will probably soon become unusable. So, I’m waiting for that time!”
Then Haruka gave me a thumbs-up with a proud expression. It was a sign of confidence.
Indeed, Haruka was a cheerful fool. Unlike Aina, she was an optimistic fool.
Because of this personality, she managed to overcome the tragedy of losing a leg on her own. Instead of being depressed, she fully embraced it as a part of her identity.
She’s strong. Foolish, but strong.
“I see. That makes sense.”
“Just wait until I become a nice-bodied model, and you’ll fall for me!”
“Sure, sure. I’ll be careful.”
I responded lightly to her joking tone. She wasn’t serious.
By the time we’re in our second year of high school, most people stop growing taller, and it’s mostly about gaining or losing weight. I didn’t point out that fact.
Besides, Haruka already had a good figure. She had maintained her slim shape from her track team days, and her legs, though one was missing, were slim with just the right amount of flesh.
Her chest was also well-formed. Not excessively large, but noticeable even through her clothes.
Seeing her next to Aina, who was quite flat, might make Haruka look better than she was.
Eventually, the bus stopped at the nearest station to the school, and I helped Haruka off the bus as I did when she got on.
A short walk from here would take us to a typical public high school. Haruka and I studied there.
At that moment, my phone vibrated. It was a call, but from whom?
“Yuuma! Why didn’t you wake me up? I’m going to be late! Ahh!”
It was my sister’s frantic voice. There were loud crashing sounds in the background. She must have tripped or something.
She must have overslept thinking she could sleep a bit longer.
“I did wake you up. Make sure to lock the door when you leave.”
There was nothing more to say. I hung up without waiting for a reply.
“Who was that?”
“My sister.”
“Hmm. You seem close to your sister, Yuuma.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I could hear her excited voice just now from just calling you by your name.”
Excited? Maybe she seemed like an amusing spectacle from the outside.
“I also talk a lot with my younger sister, but if I had a brother, I don’t think we’d be as close as you are with your sister. Anyway, I can take it from here. Thanks again!”
Haruka gave me a thumbs-up before reaching out to her wheelchair wheels.
The area around the bus stop is a slight slope, so I pushed her there. The school grounds are flat, so Haruka can move her wheelchair by herself.
At this point, she no longer needed my help. There were many other students around, and plenty of same-gender friends she could easily talk to.
Haruka uses the elevator, which regular students aren’t allowed to use, to get to the second floor of the school building. Watching her chat with classmates, I went to my seat.
“Let’s make her a magical girl!”
Amid the morning classroom chatter, Rafio spoke up.
He had been unusually fixated on Haruka for a while.
“We’ll discuss that later.”
“Ugh.”
I couldn’t let anyone in the class see me talking to a stuffed animal. Besides, homeroom was about to start.
I take my studies seriously because I promised my sister I’d get into a good university.
The classroom buzzed with talk about yesterday’s monster incident and the magical girl rumors.
It was a major event nearby, and a pretty magical girl resolved it, so naturally, everyone was curious.
No one in the classroom knew what the magical girl looked like, but they kept saying she must be cute and they wanted to meet her.
Some even speculated she must be a worthy heroine of justice.
That magical girl is now frantically rushing to avoid being late.
The chatter continued until the teacher arrived to start the homeroom.
