She is Reading My Thoughts Again Today - Chapter 43
Joke Day
After the school festival, the topic ‘school trip’ began to be talked in class. Where do you want to go, who do you want to do free activities with, what do you want to buy, and so on. Those are the topics of the conversation.
School trip. It is held on the second semester of the second year, perhaps it’s the biggest and the most awaited event in the three years of high school life. We will spend five days and four nights with our classmates.
“Are you looking forward to it?”
“I’m not so excited about it.”
“I’m depressed.”
“Why?”
I thought she would be looking forward to it.
“I’m not good in groups.”
“Ah…”
What comes to my mind is a memory of my middle school trip. Free activities and hanging out with friends are fine, but the problem is spending time with friends at the hotel. If it’s a big group, you’ll be encouraged to join the group even if you feel reluctant. But if there’s only two person in a group, it’s just eternal silence. The silence itself is not that bad, but it feels really awkward and uncomfortable when you bath and sleep with people you aren’t close with. She nodded her head in agreement.
“Indeed.”
Thinking about that awkwardness is starting to depress me as well.
“If you want to go somewhere, travelling alone is the best.”
“It must be tough for you to travel alone.”
“Still, it’s much, much better than sleeping and waking up with other people.”
The more we talk about it, the more depressed we got.
“I don’t want to go.”
She sighs and plopped down at her desk, her hair is glistening in the setting sun, I can’t help but to think that she looks really beautiful. But I still can’t believe how depressing it makes her feel.
“Well, lets just not go there, shall we?”
I’m only half serious about it. No, it’s not something for me to decide, my parents are paying for me after all. It’s just a joke.
“I’m joking.”
I muttered. I felt embarrassed and laid my head on my table. All I can see are shadows and lights coming through the gap between my arms. I can hear her holding back her laugh. She must think it’s really funny.
“Please go on to the field trip Hokuto-san.”
“Why?”
“I’d like to have some souvenirs.”
Does she think that I will buy it for her? When I ask her in my mind while staring at the light, she nods and cheerfully answer,
“Of Course.”
“…just in case, what do you want?”
“Cute things.”
“What?”
“I want something cute.”
“I’ll choose the cutest one.”
“Yeah, choose the cutest thing you can find in a cute shop.”
“I’ll definitely take you with me when I do it.”
“You’ll let me choose? I won’t hold back you know?”
“You’re not even holding back right now.”
“Am I not?”
The one that caught my eyes when I look up is Nao Kisaragi who is mischievously smiling at me.
“I’m getting a little excited about the school trip.”
“That’s great then.”
