She is Reading My Thoughts Again Today - Chapter 16
140 Yen Testimony
“One my classmates know the details of Nao’s situation. His name is Kazumi Yano. I’ve arranged a meeting for you to talk with him after school today at 5:00 in class 6-2, so be sure to go there and don’t be late.”
Then, I looked at my watch and saw it was 4:55.
“It’s 4:55! Why didn’t you tell me about it sooner!?”
“Hehe… Sorry.”
I’ll scold Mikinori about his terrible timing later. I left Mikinori’s classroom quickly and went to class 6-2. I appreciate Mikinori setting up a meeting for me, this this is too sudden, he could’ve told me about it sooner. As I arrive at class 6-2, I stood at the entrance for a while to catch my breath. Before I open the door, I saw a figure through the window. As I opened the door, the woman who was appeared to be Yuno-san turned towards me.
“Are you Yano-san?”
She tilted her head.
“That’s right.”
Then, she told me to sit down, so I pulled out a chair and sat down quietly.
“I’m surprised that you want to know about her past when it is weird enough just to be friend with her. I wonder if you are really in love with her.”
“That’s not true.”
I responded to her question as if it was natural for me to answer it that way. She just responded ‘Yeah, yeah’ to my answer. She seemed not interested with my answer even though she asked it herself. Maybe it’s because my reaction wasn’t interesting.
“Well, never mind. It’s kind of a long story, so don’t get all worked up about it.”
She let out a long deep sigh and began to talk.
“If I’m not mistaken, it was in the fifth grade. There was a boy who frequently took and broke other people’s belongings. Everyone in the class suspected and know for certain it was his doing, but none of us had evidence so we couldn’t do anything about it. One day, one of our classmates lost their summer crafts. I think we talked about it for a long time that day. We asked each other like ‘it is gone? who did it?’. Our teacher wouldn’t start the class until the culprit is found. I think it was a waste of time, but at that time the situation was pretty serious. Then, the whole class had a meeting with the teacher, but we still couldn’t figure out who is the culprit. It was at the fourth period; we weren’t allowed to have lunch until the culprit is found. Suddenly, Kisaragi stood in front of the culprit bouncing.”
As I recall, Kisaragi was bouncing when she first talked to me about her ability as well. Is it a habit or something?
“Then? Please continue.”
“As Kisaragi was standing in front of the culprit, Kisaragi said ‘I just wish this discussion could be over as soon as possible. He came early in the morning, stole the craft and buried it in a hole he dug in the third-grade field.’ The whole class went silent after hearing what Kisaragi said.”
Yuno-san told the story with a tone as if she was telling a ghost story. I couldn’t help but to think she is a really good story teller.
“At that point, the culprit’s face turned pale. ‘How does she know what I’m thinking? I didn’t say anything about it. Why? How? Please stop, I’m scared.’ The culprit said. At the end, it was really him who did it, it was a bizarre sight.”
The culprit must be frightened. It is terrifying to be in that kind of situation and suddenly someone who can read you mind show up.
We took a breath and continued the conversation.
“Some of us half-heartedly got up and dug around the third-grade field, and sure enough, we found it. They dug up someone’s craft that looked messed up and destroyed. Since then, the culprit has been on the unfortunate side of bullies.”
“What about Kisaragi?”
“After the incident, Kisaragi became the center attention of the class, she was admired. But she never really tried to socialize deeply with anyone. I guess that’s why the story turned into a rumor.”
“I think that’s just how it is. No one would think well of someone like that.”
“Can you really say those kinds of things?”
“Yeah, well.”
“I can’t help but wonder. Why don’t you shake her off?”
I was asked a question that I could answer instantly, but instead, I choked up. She slightly smiled seeing my reaction.
“Well, it seems you won’t tell me why.”
Then she exhaled and stood up stretching her arms.
“Well, that’s all I can tell you for now. I heard she had a rough time in middle school, but I was at a different school with her, so I don’t know the details of it.”
Was the rumor widespread? Or is the world smaller than expected? Its like our previous meeting with Kisaragi’s middle school friend, it feels like the world is revolving around her somehow.
“That’s all I need to hear. Thank you very much.”
I bowed my head and thanked her for spending her time to tell me her precious story.
“No problem. I don’t know what it adds up to, but I hope it helps.”
She smiled and went in front of the vending machine pointing at a coke. At the end, the price of the testimonial was not expensive, but it wasn’t cheap either.
