ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The dragon appeared above the knights’ barracks. Contrary to expectations, it was covered in white scales and feathers, a completely pure-white form. But its eyes were red.
The beating of its membranous wings sent wind down all the way to the ground. The dragon looked down on us, fixing its gaze intently.
Carnivore… And a man-eater at that!? We’re not food, damn it!?
“Kaito, get back. I can’t do much, but… I’ll fulfill my duty as your guard.”
“Aisha, don’t push yourself—”
I didn’t even finish saying it because a violent gust blew us away. The dragon had dived and landed in the square. The impact and the flapping of its wings whipped up winds stronger than a typhoon, and my body slid across the ground.
“Damn it, it’s already here!”
Clawing at the training ground’s dirt like I was digging my nails in, I clung to the ground against the storm. The first to move were the Margrave Wahlheit and Vice Commander Mial. Drawing their swords, they charged the dragon’s massive body with magically strengthened legs.
“Haah!”
Giin!
A metallic clang rang out. Even blades reinforced by magic didn’t seem to leave a scratch on the dragon. If it made a metal sound, that meant the dragon’s scales were as hard as steel. This was bad—our weapons weren’t working at all.
Vice Commander Mial leapt onto the Margrave’s sword, and in the same motion, the Margrave swung it, launching him right before the dragon’s eyes. A blade formed of magical power extended like a towering sword, striking the dragon head-on.
The dragon recoiled, but it wasn’t injured at all. Not a drop of blood, not even a scratch on its scales.
The white dragon drooled from its mouth, let out a growl, and then roared toward the heavens.
―GROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRHHHH!”
What kind of voice was that!? Even a lightning strike in front of me wouldn’t be this loud!
Judging that the dragon had entered combat mode, the Margrave and Vice Commander added more attacks. They were probably trying to overwhelm it with strikes before it could counter. But none of their attacks looked effective. Even Aisha, who had been focused solely on guarding me, was starting to show signs of panic.
“Not even that much damage works? Then how the hell do we beat it…!?”
Not working? Yeah… It’s not working.
Wait. Something was off. I looked into the dragon’s eyes. It deflected the attacks, saliva flying from its mouth, but its gaze was fixed elsewhere. At me? Was it looking at me? No… not me.
What then? Why… Despite ineffective attacks and without countering… What was it looking at? At the supplies I had laid out.
“—I see! Aisha, Etna, Pirika! Help me!”
I pulled out a bunch of blue tarps, had everyone spread them out, and piled as much food as I could buy on top.
“Margrave! Vice Commander Mial! That’s enough—stop attacking!”
“What!? Kaito, you—do you intend to get yourself eaten!?”
The Margrave looked at me in shock. But the dragon didn’t take the chance to attack. Just as I thought.
Eaten? No way.
“—I’m going to feed it!”
I stepped forward onto the battlefield. I walked into the space between the dragon and the Margrave’s group, standing right before it. It was drooling; it had to be starving.
So that’s what you want? That’s fine.
I shouted at the dragon with all the strength I had.
“—You’re hungry, right!? Eat all you want! There’s plenty here!!”
The dragon, which until then hadn’t moved much, lumbered forward. The Margrave and Vice Commander stopped in alarm at its strange behavior, as it ignored their presence. The dragon lowered its nose toward the food spread on the tarps, then turned to look back at me.
It was almost like it was asking me for permission. So I answered.
“Go ahead. It’s all yours. Eat as much as you like.”
As if taking my words in, the dragon slowly lowered its head again and began to eat the bread, jam, honey, and meat laid out on the tarps. Right now, this dragon was eating a meal. Simply chewing the food calmly, savoring it.
The Margrave and Vice Commander were dumbfounded at the sight.
“Maybe it got a taste for the food that Commander Sharon’s unit left behind. The smell must have drawn it here, huh?”
I asked aloud, and in place of an answer, its long tail thudded against the ground. So even dragons wagged their tails, huh. Though it raised dust clouds and made the earth shake, so I wished it would be a bit more careful.
When the dragon finished everything on the tarp, it let out a lonely whine. Then it turned to look at me again.
Don’t worry.
“There’s more. I can bring out as much as you want. Did you like it? Then eat until you’re full.”
I said that and began ordering more—sweets, meat dishes, prepared meals—laying them out one after another. Aisha, the others, and even the Margrave helped me arrange them.
Of course. Even a dragon gets hungry. And of course it wants to eat tasty food.
“Eat as much as you want. You don’t have to worry about being hungry ever again.”
At those words, the dragon looked delighted and started eating again. I wondered—did Japanese food taste good even to a dragon? I hoped it did.
If you’re going to eat, better that it’s delicious—then you’ll be happy.
Over and over, I brought out more food, giving it everything it wanted. Did I give it enough for, what, two hundred million portions? The dragon devoured it all with obvious relish.
Eventually, its movements slowed, and it curled up. I thought it was about to sleep, but then something strange happened. The white dragon’s body began to shine and change in size. Before my eyes, it shrank smaller and smaller, until finally—
“…A girl!?”
What stood there was a young girl with pure white hair, dressed in white clothes. At the sight, the Margrave exclaimed in shock.
“—A dragonkin!? No way, an Ancient Dragon!?”
“Dragonkin? Ancient Dragon?”
I tilted my head, and Vice Commander Mial came over to explain.
“Ancient Dragons are a special kind of dragon, skilled in magic and able to use unique spells. It’s said that when they descended into human lands long ago, they used transformation magic, and the form they took was that of dragonkin.”
“Huhhh.”
So, a special type of dragon. One that can even transform into a human.
That must be why it had suddenly appeared on the mountain without being seen in its dragon form. From what I heard, they were an extremely rare race. But why would one be out here, in the frontier? Or maybe because this was the frontier?
If they were rare enough, that meant they deliberately avoided human eyes. Which would put them in beast-infested, uninhabited places… Basically, way out here in the borderlands.
While I stood there dazed, the dragon girl ran up to me. She tugged on my pants and cupped a hand over her mouth. Wondering what she was doing, I bent down to listen. The girl whispered softly.
“Um… Thank you. That was delicious… Can I have some more?”
The way she said it was so cute, the gap between her and the dragon form from earlier made me burst out laughing. And of course, the answer was obvious.
“Yeah, sure. I’ll let you eat as much as you want.”
