Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 94 Discovery of Chili peppers
It was Saturday, so I decided to explore the forest once again.
While there are many things available for sale in town, there are also plant species that are not even sold there.
I stopped by my neighbor’s place and brought Lania along.
We searched while passing through the stump-dotted plains in search of Elder Mushrooms.
“Oh, there’s an Elder Mushroom.”
[False Elder Mushroom: Mushroom, Not Edible (Highly Poisonous)]
Oh no…
There’s another one nearby.
[Elder Mushroom: Mushroom, Edible]
“All right, safe to eat. I did it!”
While it may be tempting to become complacent when there are Elder Mushrooms nearby, it’s important to double-check everything.
At the entrance of the forest, I received a blessing from Minya.
“Please greet Bell as well.”
“Yes!”
Ciel’s face blushes slightly, but then she becomes focused and starts ringing the bell.
“Under the divine protection of Raffalier-sama…”
Ding dong, ding dong dong, dong, ding dong.
The tune is different from before.
Perhaps she practice on her days off, refining her skills.
It’s good to see they have a sense of ambition.
And so, with our company’s doubled power, we enter the forest.
Hehehe.
Today, we’re heading northeast.
If we go straight, we’ll reach Exis Falls, but we ignored all the surrounding vegetation last time. This time, we’ll focus on the plants and trees.
Hehehe.
“Oh, a fallen tree. It’s a wood ear mushroom!”
Minya keenly spots it.
Yes, indeed, it appears to be a wood ear mushroom based on my appraisal as well.
I’ve never heard of a poisonous mushroom resembling a wood ear, but let’s be cautious nonetheless.
And so, we continue walking for a while.
“Tomatoes? Oh, wait, these look thinner.”
Among the grass with branches resembling tomatoes, there are several red and green fruits.
However, they are not round; they are elongated.
There are only a few possibilities that come to my mind, but it’s best to appraise them to be sure.
By the way, even appraising requires the use of magic, to some extent.
I believe I have a decent amount of magic power, but it’s not unlimited, so I can’t appraise every single plant I come across.
[Chili Pepper: Plant, Common]
Ohhh, it’s a chili pepper!
I thought it might be a small variety of bell pepper or a slender paprika.
Until now, I’ve relied on Sansho pepper and black pepper for spiciness.
I’ve been wanting some chili peppers.
“Is this sweet? Is it delicious?”
“No, it’s spicy.”
“Huh, spicy? I don’t want it then.”
“It’s not like that. It’s delicious in its own way.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes.”
Minya-chan is such a foodie.
Now that we’ve gathered some tomatoes and found several chili peppers nearby, we continue collecting them as we walk.
And so, we returned home.
We manage with a simple menu for lunch.
In the afternoon, I put the chili peppers in a basket-like sieve and dry them.
They become dried chili peppers.
I often slice them and use them in cooking. Somehow, I feel like dried ones are better than fresh ones.
“It looks so delicious with such vibrant colors, but it’s spicy?”
“Yes.”
“Hmm.”
They all make faces that show they don’t fully understand.
“Want to give it a try?”
“Yes.”
“Divide it into three pieces, take just a small bite from the corner. It’s still going to be extremely spicy.”
“Hmm.”
“Kyaaa!”
“Ueeeh!”
“Myaauu!”
The sounds of their screams echo through the kitchen.
They rush to the water pitcher on the counter.
There’s a ladle-like utensil, so they use it to drink water.
“Whew, I thought I was going to die.”
“This is a no-go.”
“There’s no way I’m having this, meow. It’s too spicy, meow, definitely not delicious, meow.”
After going through such an ordeal, all three of them have come to understand the spiciness.
It’s all about the experience.
Although I won’t try it myself.
Everyone recovers and it’s already evening.
“Ta-dah! For dinner, we have… Peperoncino!”
“Huh, what’s that?”
“I’m thinking of making gnocchi alla peperoncino.”
“Hmm, will it taste good?”
“Well, at least I hope so.”
They probably have no idea what it is.
All three of them are looking at it with a curious expression.
I start making the gnocchi.
It’s a shame that there aren’t any pre-packaged pasta options available.
I wish they would start selling them, but I have no knowledge of making dried pasta.
I’m not sure if you simply dry them or not.
I roughly boil the gnocchi.
Using wild garlic from the meadow, forest-grown chili peppers, store-bought olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
A little twist.
I sauté a bit of wild boar meat.
Then I add dandelion greens.
Once we have something like garlic-infused oil, I add the gnocchi and toss them together.
And voila, it’s ready!
“That smells really good.”
“The scent is mostly from the garlic.”
“Oh, garlic, meow.”
“Well then, shall we eat?”
“With gratitude to Raffalier-sama, let’s dig in.”
“Bon appétit!”
Now, let’s enjoy the meal.
The three of them are looking at my face.
“Huh? Aren’t you all going to eat?”
“Yes,” “Meow.”
Oh, really? Well then, let’s dig in.
“…Delicious!”
I’m thoroughly satisfied on my own.
Peperoncino, here it is.
I’m glad to have encountered Peperoncino once again.
“If you say so, then I’ll give it a try.”
Although they all seem anxious, it looks like they’re willing to taste it.
“Mmm, delicious!”
“It’s tasty, Ed-kun.”
“It’s a bit spicy, but I think it’s delicious, meow.”
Yes, yes.
I don’t know why, but they do sell tomatoes and such.
But they don’t sell chili peppers.
It seems like they’re not commonly used in cooking either.
Melun and Gid also liked it.
“It’s spicy, but it’s delicious, Ed-kun.”
“That’s right. It’s unique, but it’s tasty.”
That’s what they said.
It’s good to know that even the Elven Lord approves.
