Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 87 Goblin alarm
A few days after our battle with the goblins…
“Hey, have you heard? The goblin incident.”
“Yeah, the goblin alert, right?”
“That’s it, the goblin alert.”
This topic has dominated our conversations at school. It’s the perfect gathering ground for such rumors.
Lately, goblin sightings in the forest have become increasingly frequent. We’ve confirmed that there are more than twice as many goblins roaming around compared to before.
Ironically, the first report came from our party.
Once goblins start multiplying, their numbers can grow rapidly.
Finally, the city of Trieste issued an official notice yesterday afternoon.
“In the name of Count Zeckenbauer, the ruler of Trieste, a goblin alert is hereby issued.”
Naturally, it became a problem in Lanierda. Well, we’re right in the middle of it.
The defensive walls being built by the ruler in Lanierda are still unfinished, barely halfway done.
“We couldn’t finish the walls in time.”
“Yeah.”
“Our lord is quite foolish.”
If only the ruler had made their decision a year or even a month earlier. We can’t help but speculate and gossip, even though we know it’s all hypothetical.
As expected, the harpy messengers flew through the sky, delivering the first reports and requests for assistance to the capital and other cities.
About ten mercenaries promptly arrived from the nearest town, Draxia.
In broad terms, the ruling army consists of the regular knights, the common soldiers made up of civilians, and the mercenary corps.
The number of mercenaries is usually quite small during normal times. People who sense the impending danger gather together and form groups.
The knights are full-time employees, while the mercenaries are like temporary or part-time workers. Their equipment and provisions differ significantly.
Schools have been closed since the alert was issued.
The children are still involved in herb harvesting, but only a few remain for the drying process. The rest have started mock battles resembling Ed’s poop wars.
“Uryaa!”
“Teiyaa!”
“Oops, an opening!”
Well, considering we started with swordplay, we’re pretty good at it now. Some of the kids have been practicing since then and have made significant progress.
These kids have gathered together and formed an adventurer-like party, just like us. However, since there aren’t many girls in the slums, it’s mostly a group of boys.
Their equipment recently upgraded to iron swords. They are a few years older than us.
The construction of the defensive walls is progressing rapidly, but without increasing the number of workers, the progress is slow. However, due to budget constraints, only a few more workers have been added.
Instead, temporary watchtowers have been set up at three locations: the new East Gate, new North Gate, and Northeast Gate of Lanierda’s defensive walls. From these towers, you can have a panoramic view of the grassy clearing where the tree stumps are. If goblins emerge from the forest, the first report can be quickly transmitted. They’ve installed iron plates with hammers, enabling them to ring alarm bells.
Thinking about it, this is what a real alarm bell is supposed to be. It’s unrelated, but it reminds me of the bells that rang during the fire incident.
Thus, the mercenary corps was stationed at the gates, and adventurers filled the guild. The preparations were underway.
However, days passed, yet the goblins did not overflow. Seasoned adventurers conducted reconnaissance in the forest, and while encounters were occurring at twice the usual rate, their numbers did not increase further.
And then, a week went by.
The goblin alert was downgraded to a goblin caution. Some of the people who were urgently recruited grew impatient with the lack of any developments after a week and left.
Consequently, more people are returning to their regular jobs today, as they resume their usual routines.
“I think it’s still a good idea to reinforce our forces, even at this point.”
“Ed thinks the same, and so do I.”
“It’s just Harris who agrees with us.”
It was decided that schools would reopen under the caution level.
The students continue with seemingly peaceful learning, singing the alphabet songs and practicing simple multiplication, as if nothing has changed.
However, I also know.
Ever since Gid-san became aware of the goblin alert, he has been wearing his sword at his waist. It’s been the same since his inspection visit to Eldania, I believe. Even with the downgrade to a caution level, he still keeps his sword equipped.
Gid-san can sense the unsettling atmosphere. There’s a possibility that the noble elves can actually feel the presence of goblins gathering in the distance.
Gid-san doesn’t say anything. He remains silent, but his demeanor is as close to a yellow light as possible.
In reality, the adventurer’s guild hasn’t relaxed their state of vigilance. The fact that the caution level is still in effect is proof enough of the threat.
However, the number of adventurers on standby is decreasing day by day.
At Lanierda Blue Sky Elementary School, they celebrated the lifting of the goblin alert by treating everyone to rabbit meat. It was actually a party thrown by the group returning from their guard duty at the lookout mountain.
Of course, their guard duty was specifically for the goblin caution, so it doesn’t mean that everything is completely safe.
Everyone gathered around, enjoying their grilled rabbit meat and engaging in conversation.
“The meat is delicious.”
“It’s meat, just meat.”
“It’s proof that it’s safe now.”
“It’s been a peaceful day again.”
“Maybe the goblins won’t come back anymore.”
The general atmosphere was optimistic, much like the children.
A few days later, it seemed that half of the mercenary corps would be leaving. The reason being the unpleasant smell coming from the west.
In the west, there are pseudo-human wars. While there aren’t any major conflicts, there are occasional minor clashes over power struggles.
In the Elven Kingdom to the north, the Holy Nation of Titania, there has been a dispute over who will govern the Salvatoria Duchy since it was occupied a few years ago. However, there is hardly any open combat. It seems they are engaging in political battles behind the scenes, unbeknownst to us. However, it could be relevant to Gid-san and the others, so we need to be cautious.
That’s how the feeling of vigilance started to relax on a Wednesday. It was just before school ended.
Clang, clang, clang, clang, clang…
The alarm bells of Lanierda began ringing from the New North Gate. In response, the bells echoed from the Northeast Gate and the New East Gate.
Goblin Stampede.
Finally, the goblins must have surged forward in a massive horde. Tension ran through our ranks.
