Chapter 75 A Walk in the Neighborhood and a Rainy Night
It’s Sunday.
The morning has become refreshingly pleasant.
Since there’s no weather forecast available, we can’t really know the weather until the day itself. However, there’s a general tendency for it to be sunny during this season.
After having breakfast, let’s go out and have some fun.
I’ll bring along Lania.
Today, we won’t bring any weapons.
“We’re going for a walk in the neighborhood. Oh, and let’s visit our garden too.”
“The garden!”
“Yes.”
Our house is located on the outskirts of a residential area, with a field and a castle wall behind it.
Although our yard is small, we have peach and summer tangerine trees planted in it.
The peach blossoms have already fallen, and small green peaches have started to grow.
As for the summer tangerines, they have fruits, but I don’t think they’re ripe yet. It’s still before the season.
“Oh, I see. We still can’t eat the tangerines.”
“Yeah, it’ll take a while longer.”
“Hmm.”
The gluttonous fairy, Minya, expresses her disappointment.
Various plants are growing together in the garden.
“What about this? Pink Knotweed.”
[ Pink Knotweed – Plant – Common]
“Common!?” Well, I guess it’s normal. Not a premium item, just normal. It seems it’s not edible, though.”
I’ve seen something very similar to this even before I was reincarnated. Japanese Knotweed has three leaves like a clover. The flowers are pink and taste sour when eaten. I’ve tried them before.
Besides the regular type, there are smaller variations of Knotweed with yellow flowers. I’ve heard that the ones with purple leaves are called Purple Knotweed.
Due to its resilient nature, constantly regrowing no matter how many times it’s pulled out, Knotweed was valued during the Warring States period and even became family crests and such.
“Oh, I see.”
“I don’t really get it.”
It seems Minya found it difficult to understand.
Lania was nodding along, trying to grasp the information.
Meanwhile, Ciel is observing a butterfly perched on the Knotweed.
Well, it’s alright.
Let’s try picking a flower and letting them taste it.
“Here you go, give it a try.”
“Wow, sour.”
“So sour! It’s interesting.”
Well, that’s unexpected. They seem surprisingly delighted, and it makes me happy.
Maybe it would be nice to sprinkle these flowers on a salad.
Let’s continue our walk for a little while.
The backyard of the house is an olive grove.
And in the space between, onions are planted.
It seems they intend to make effective use of the land.
Quite interesting, I must say.
There’s a pond nearby.
It has a shallow depth, except for a slightly deeper, transparent and bluish area in the center.
Apparently, it accumulates spring water, which keeps the water clean.
Small fish are swimming around in it.
But what’s even more abundant are the tadpoles.
“There are so many tadpoles.”
“Yeah.”
Everyone gathers around to peer into the water.
They have black heads with tails attached.
Some of them even have hind legs already.
“This will turn into a frog, right?”
“That’s right.”
Even Minya knows that.
Frog eggs are part of a child’s basic knowledge.
There’s a small pond behind the slums too.
The water there is stagnant, but it’s home to various insects and such.
“Do you eat frogs? What about tadpoles?”
“Well, they don’t grow very big, so we don’t eat them.”
“I see.”
Minya’s questions keep coming.
Lania smiles affectionately, finding it amusing.
Ciel observes the tadpoles with great interest.
By the way, it seems they do eat larger frog monsters.
There are water striders on the surface, creating ripples as they occasionally move.
We don’t eat water striders either.
Leaving the pond behind, we continue our stroll around the area.
Upon closer inspection, we occasionally spot mushrooms growing.
However, they rarely grow big enough to be used for food, unlike on the other side of the slums.
[Hotarubukuro – Plant – Common]
It blooms with white flowers that resemble hanging pouches.
They were growing in clusters.
It’s quite a sight to behold.
Well, since it’s not food, Minya and Ciel don’t seem very interested.
I thought the city was just filled with houses and devoid of nature, but it seems different in the back.
My previous work mainly focused on the city center, so that’s the image I had, I guess.
After dinner,
The sun has already set, and there’s only a faint glow in the sky.
“Look, this is Tsukimisou.”
When written in kanji, it means “moon-viewing flower.”
During the bright daytime, the flowers remain closed and only open in the evening.
They bloom in a bright fluorescent-like yellow color, about a few centimeters in size.
【Matsuyoi-gusa – Plant – Common】
Actually, this is not officially called Tsukimisou.
I know that plants like this are often used in folk medicine, but the knowledge of herbal remedies is not widespread among ordinary people.
That’s why I don’t know much about it either.
Melun seems knowledgeable, though. I wonder if she knows about it.
Ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit.
Ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit.
Ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit ribbit.
“It’s so noisy.”
“What’s that, Ed? I can’t hear well.”
“Mew.”
Now, the Matsuyoi-gusa is beautiful, but it’s also incredibly noisy.
This is what they call the “Frog Chorus.”
Rain is coming.
I return home.
I lock the door.
There are no glass windows, but there are sliding doors.
I’m not exactly sure what they’re called, to be honest.
They weren’t present in the slums.
They’re those things attached to the outside of the window, slanted with a lid on top.
With these, I can feel at ease even when strong winds blow.
“Alright, time to sleep.”
“Goodnight, Ed, chu chu.”
“Goodnight, Ed-kun… chu.”
As usual, Minya comes with her chu chu attacks in the morning and evening.
Lately, even Ciel, influenced by Minya, gives a chu too.
Though her face turns red, she only does it once.
That, in its own way, is quite adorable and shy.
“Edoo.”
“Mew, myau.”
The door rattles.
The three of us embrace and sleep, while outside, we hear the fierce sounds of wind and rain.
It must be a storm.
I wonder if everyone in the slums is okay.
Although the temperature has dropped compared to usual, I feel warm because Minya clings tightly to me.
Natural heating is particularly effective in times like this.
It was a street filled with the sound of frogs. The frogs were in their element.
Leaving the windows wide open while sleeping in the heat turned out to be a bad idea.
The rain and wind continued throughout the night.
However, in the morning, it had cleared up completely, as if the typhoon had passed by.
I have no idea if this world experiences monsoons similar to typhoons.
“Wow! The sun! It’s so bright! The air feels so clean!”
Minya spreads her arms wide and runs around the yard.
She’s like a dog. Well, actually, she’s a cat.
The rain seems to have cleared the dust particles from the air, making the sky blue.
Occasionally, the frogs croak.
Pigeons and sparrows take flight.
Dragonflies fly together in a swarm.
The grass and flowers sway in the wind, creating a rustling sound.
The dappled sunlight also dances and sparkles.
I wonder if the dragonflies were carried here by the wind.
Today, Trieste appears to be peaceful at first glance.
However, some areas are a mess due to the heavy rain.
There might be some damage as well.
Let’s have breakfast and head to school.
