Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 25 Mage’s weapon
Continuing on Monday morning at the Adventurers Guild.
I have three gold coins and a few silver coins left in funds.
Of course, I don’t intend to spend all of it and end up broke.
“Minya, do you want a staff or something? I want to ask. I want you to be able to defeat goblins on your own. Ideally, even stronger enemies.”
“Of course, if it’s what the savior desires, Minya will do anything to show it.”
Why are you so loyal to me, Minya?
It’s not just about the gratitude for a night’s lodging and a meal.
“Do you want a staff? Or should we make you a healer with a sword? How about a mace?”
“Well, honestly, I’m not sure.”
“Yeah, I see.”
“Maybe I should consult with Lania or Mama.”
“Right, should we go fetch Lania then?”
“Yes.”
We’ve made it all the way to the Adventurers Guild, but let’s go back for now.
Even though it’s an extra trip, it’s my fault for not realizing that Lania wasn’t here.
“Thank you very much.”
“Oh no, not at all. Keep up the good work.”
After receiving encouragement from the shopkeeper, I left the Adventurers Guild, feeling a bit smug.
Phew, I didn’t get bothered by any ruffians today either. The Adventurers Guild is surprisingly safe.
I walked slowly, passing through the castle gate, heading towards Lania’s house.
“Laaaniiaaa-chan!”
“Yes, I’m coming!”
It was Lania. Today, she was wearing a dress, a blue and white one that looked better than what we were wearing.
“What’s up, Lania? Nice dress.”
“Hehe, I bought it.”
“With a gold coin?”
“No, it was with silver coins.”
Dresses are usually the most expensive when bought with gold coins, but if you search for hidden gems or look for second-hand ones, you can buy them with silver coins.
The brown mass-produced clothes are even cheaper. And if they’re second-hand, even more so.
She really is a girl after all. She’s so cute.
“You look great, Lania.”
“Really? Yay!”
She looked so happy and adorable.
“Actually, this dress has an enchanted effect that boosts attack magic. It was a hand-me-down from a noble young lady, but it seems there’s no demand for it, so it was on special sale. My mother bought it for me yesterday.”
“Wow, that’s amazing.”
“See, I told you it’s awesome.”
I also found a Severing Sword, you know. But there’s no point in comparing. It’s a joyous occasion when party members enhance their combat abilities.
“I also bought a Severing Sword, for one gold coin.”
“That’s impressive, but it’s expensive, right?”
“Well, yeah.”
I took out the sword from my item box to show her.
I could actually keep it strapped to my waist, but just in case, I had stored it discreetly. It would draw attention if I kept taking it out and putting it back in while in the city, so it was better to have it out for now.
Naturally, a strap for hanging the sword from the waist came with it.
I tied and secured it around my waist. It felt somewhat uneasy.
I took another look at Lania’s blue and white dress.
It had a slightly sailor-style design, with pleats on the skirt, making it cute.
Ah, so this is what a mage, no, a magical girl’s outfit looks like.
And if you were to buy it brand new, it would cost around ten gold coins as a custom order. But she got it as a second-hand item on special sale for silver coins. Even I would be tempted to make an impulse purchase.
With Lania all dressed up, we passed through the castle gate once again.
“Hey, Ed.”
I was stopped by the gatekeeper, who happens to be a familiar face. We know each other by name.
He’s a friendly old man.
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“What happened to that sword?”
“I bought it.”
“You wanna become a knight or something? Don’t push yourself too hard.”
“I won’t push myself. I value my life. I’m more of an adventurer, to be honest.”
“Not a knight, huh? Alright, an adventurer then. Hmm.”
“What’s with that reaction?”
“Oh, it’s nothing. Just do your best.”
“Ah, thanks.”
“You can pass.”
Well, if you pass through every week, you’ll at least recognize a familiar face.
Even though the gatekeepers are on a rotation, there aren’t many of them.
Minya and Lania were having a conversation behind me.
I thought it was a girls’ talk, but they were discussing about weapons.
Rod is good, or maybe a mace.
For a staff, probably a wand, after all.
I don’t really understand the difference between staffs.
The image I have of a rod is a staff with a large gem at the tip.
A wand, I think, is a more magical staff.
A mace is a hammer with a weighted end, a striking weapon.
All of them can be used for hitting.
Come to think of it, in my previous life on Earth, there was a story about an old wizard who relentlessly beat people with a staff.
We arrived at the Adventurers Guild.
“Thank you.”
“Hello.”
“Sorry for the interruption.”
We exchanged various greetings and entered the guild.
The cowbell rang out in an empty space.
Since I rarely have the opportunity to enter regular shops, I’m not quite sure about proper etiquette. In my previous life, it was common not to greet when entering a store.
“Oh, what’s this, a little boy swaggering around with a sword.”
Oh no.
Thugs, ruffians, veteran adventurers, old-timers…
They have different titles, but he’s a dangerous old man.
In his forties, with messy hair and a mix of white hair and a bearded face, he looks like a rough character. His clothing is so worn-out that it could be mistaken for someone from the slums.
However, he’s wearing partial armor on his upper body, which signifies that he’s an adventurer.
“Well, you see…”
“Aren’t you running errands?”
“No, I had some extra income, so I wanted to get staffs for them.”
“Oh, I see.”
The face that was teasing me suddenly changed into an expression of someone sharp and astute.
His eyes, they’re different from before.
“Okay, let’s have your brother give it a look.”
“old man?”
“Not an old man, I’m still in my thirties.”
“I see.”
I can’t say it’s a lie. His face looked serious, and he’s intimidating.
He casually leads me to the shop on the left.
“Staffs, both white and black ones.”
“Uh, yes, those for white mages and black mages, suitable for beginners and children.”
“That’s right.”
“I wonder if we have them…”
“Don’t say you don’t have them.”
“Understood!”
Don’t scare the shopkeeper, old man.
I can’t say it because he’s intimidating, though.
Wait, I never mentioned white and black to the old man, so how does he know?
Seems like he’s been an adventurer for many years, after all.
I’ll slightly revise my evaluation of the old man in a positive direction.
“Here, take a look at these.”
“No good, they’re too long. Consider their height, they’ll be dragging them around.”
“You’re right.”
Minya is smaller than me, so long staffs won’t work.
The old man seems to have a discerning eye. His gaze is sharp. If only he could be a bit gentler, he might be a nice person.
He chose a short white wooden staff with a red gem at the tip for Minya, and a mysterious black staff with a decorative piece and a blue gem at the tip for Rania.
“Wow, they’re so cool!”
“Yes, I’m happy.”
By the way, the price was two gold coins. Originally it was three gold coins, but for some reason, the old man gave a discount of one gold coin equivalent using the points on my guild card.
Hmm, he really is that helpful… Well, looks can be deceiving.
Before Lania could discuss covering the cost herself, the old man and I settled the payment, so I ended up paying the two gold coins from my wallet. I won’t have a girl pay a large sum of money while I entrust my life to her—just thinking about it is enough to make a man cry
