Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 142 Fairy and lost child
Amidst the summer of August, the sky stretched wide under the clear sun, granting us a comfortably warm day despite the heat.
Following our lunch, we found ourselves by the castle gates, engaging in sword practice alongside soldiers and Beast-san.
Minya, Lania, and Ciel observed from the sidelines, engrossed in studying the nearby wildflowers.
Eventually, they ventured beyond the gates, busy gathering flowers and crafting hair ornaments and such.
“Hey, where did Minya and the others go?”
“They were picking flowers over there just a moment ago.”
“No, they’re not here.”
Suddenly, they had vanished from sight.
“Trouble. We need a search party immediately.”
The carpenters and others took to scouring the town.
Hunters and adventurers, who have recently started appearing here and there, formed teams and ventured into the forest for the search.
Beast-san, along with us, also formed a team and followed suit into the woods.
“Let’s find them as quickly as possible.”
“You got it!”
◇◇◇
In the early afternoon, we were playing just outside the castle gates.
“Oh, it’s a fairy!”
Gazing into the forest, I noticed a glowing orb floating.
Ah, yes, it was the same fairy I had seen before.
As if drawn in by an enchantment, I found myself walking toward it.
Even now, looking back, it’s like I was under some kind of spell, swaying as I advanced.
“Hey, Minya-chan.”
“Minya-chan!”
Lania-chan and Ciel-chan also noticed and followed me.
And so, the three of us entered the woods together.
“There was a fairy.”
“Did you see it clearly?”
“Yeah. This way.”
I sensed a strong magical presence somehow. I had felt this before, in the forest near Lanierda.
“Oh, over there.”
“It’s true, it seemed to sparkle for a moment.”
“Where, meow?”
Lania-chan seemed to catch a glimpse too, her eyes wide open.
Then, she turned her face towards me and nodded, making a curious sound.
Look, it’s the fairy.
“We need to follow quickly.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah.”
“Fairy, meow-meow.”
At that moment, I was filled with urgency.
Why? I couldn’t quite explain.
Yet, I continued following the fairy deeper into the forest, step by step.
I had ventured into this forest many times before, so I was somewhat familiar with this area.
“Minya-chan, um, whereabouts do you think we are?”
“Huh? Maybe somewhere a bit to the west?”
“The atmosphere around here feels different somehow.”
“Could be. Maybe, I don’t know.”
We had already lost track of our current location.
I believe we’re still within the Exis Forest.
As for direction, we might have headed straight west from Eldania, perhaps a bit south of the Western Fort.
“Even though we’re not sure, the fairy is this way.”
“Yeah. But are we okay not to turn back?”
“We still have time until evening, don’t we?”
“Well, that’s true, but…”
Even looking back now, I must have been enchanted by the fairy.
My judgment was clouded.
“We might be lost.”
Lania-chan said with a concerned tone.
“Yeah, did we get lost?”
“It’s possible.”
“Meowww…”
I decided to admit that I was lost too.
“I’m getting hungry, meow.”
“Yeah, me too. Let’s gather things we can eat from around here.”
“Sure, let’s do that.”
And so, while following the presence of the fairy, we began to gather food.
As we looked around, we spotted familiar plants here and there.
“These are heart-shaped, wild taro.”
“Indeed.”
Ed-chan had appraised these before.
We had been taught about various types of plants by Ed-chan.
So, we had become capable of distinguishing them.
I dug up the wild yam with a wooden branch.
It was easier to dig up than I had expected.
“We did it, we did it!”
“That’s impressive.”
“We did it, meow.”
And then, we continued on our way.
“This is a tomato.”
“Yes, it is.”
“Wild tomatoes, meow.”
Harvesting the red fruit from the tomato tree, I could easily distinguish it since tomatoes were the only ones around here that grew to such a size. I hadn’t heard of any similar poisonous plants.
As time passed, the sun began to set.
“Mushrooms!”
“You shouldn’t eat mushrooms without Ed-kun’s guidance.”
“Oh, right, yeah.”
Lania-chan stopped me.
Come to think of it, she had mentioned not to make hasty judgments, as even similar-looking mushrooms could be poisonous. Although these mushrooms looked delicious, we passed them by this time.
With a slight sense of regret, we continued on, still sensing the presence of the fairy a little further ahead.
Finally, we arrived at a small spring.
The fairy’s presence seemed to disperse around this area, making it hard to locate.
“What a beautiful spring.”
“That’s true!”
“Meowww.”
Lania-chan’s enthusiastic exclamation prompted agreement from both of us.
“Let’s drink some water.”
The three of us scooped water and took a sip.
“It’s getting dark, and we don’t know the way back.”
“True.”
“Let’s start a fire here and make it a camp.”
“Got it!”
“Meow, meow.”
We gathered firewood, and Lania-chan used her magic to ignite the fire.
“Phew, now I feel relieved.”
“It’s somewhat mystical with the fire and this beautiful water.”
“That’s right, hehe. It’s strange how even though we’re in the forest, there’s no sense of monster presence.”
“Yeah, this area might be what they call a safety zone.”
It’s like a story.
In various places throughout dungeons and fields known as mazes, there are places blessed by higher beings, spirits, fairies, and such. These are called safety zones, where monsters don’t come near.
I used to think it was just superstition or fairy tales, but it might actually be true.
We shared such stories and laughed.
We skewered the taro on branches and roasted them. After rinsing the tomatoes with water from the spring, we bit into them whole.
We were smiling.
There was a hint of loneliness, but somehow, I felt everything would be alright.
“It’s alright. Ed-kun will come to pick us up.”
“Because it’s Ed-kun.”
“That’s right, meow.”
“Ed-chan is my savior after all.”
Encouraging each other, we huddled together and fell asleep.
The next morning…
“Hey there, Minya.”
“Hey there.”
I woke up suddenly. The sun had already risen.
Despite being outdoors, we had fallen into a deep sleep last night, tired from our journey.
“Ed-chaaaan!”
“Hey!”
We called out, and a response came back.
Safely, we managed to reunite.
Except for our main equipment, we had stored most of our belongings in Ed-chan’s mysterious item box, so we weren’t carrying much.
Ed-chan came running.
We all embraced and held each other tightly.
We made our way back through the forest together.
And so, we managed to return to Eldania. However, on this day alone, our usually gentle Papa scolded us.
Such a small summer adventure became a cherished memory.
