Chapter 127 Royal Capital Festival of Spring Flowers, Songs and Dances
Melria Kingdom, the capital city of Melrithia.
We make our way through the heart of the capital city in a carriage.
Most of the houses are three stories tall, featuring wooden pillars and stone walls, a common architectural theme.
In the square, there are people playing instruments and singing, with crowds dancing around them.
It’s the capital city’s festival, the “Royal Capital Festival of Spring Flowers, Songs, and Dances.”
Flowers are elegantly adorned here and there, a reflection of the cultivation happening in the surrounding villages for this very festival.
The carriage continues, heading straight for the specialized carriage shop of the Commercial Guild.
Oh, before we arrive, we should unload our baggage.
I retrieve items from my storage box and start loading them.
Unloading baggage from the carriage isn’t our responsibility.
As we arrive in front of the shop, the carriage comes to a halt.
“All right, let’s get off.”
“Yeah.”
Upon Tomaria’s suggestion, we disembark from the carriage together.
After bidding farewell to the horse and driver who accompanied us for the past few days, we set out into the town.
First things first, let’s have lunch.
It was a little past noon. The timing was awkward, so we hadn’t taken a lunch break.
“Ed, Ed, meat!”
Without hesitation, Minya spots a food stall and bounces up and down.
She’s incredibly adorable, but her hunger is evident, so I can’t just keep watching.
“Got it, got it. Sir, five meat buns, please.”
“Sure thing!”
I receive freshly baked buns from the man wearing a headband.
Price-wise, they’re a bit higher than the wolf meat in Trieste City, considering the bread. But, I have no idea what kind of meat this is.
Given that the capital city is more urban, the cost of living might be naturally higher.
“Hey, mister, what kind of meat is this?”
“Well, it’s probably sheep or goat. You see, the Azhibellian Empire has a strong tradition of herding, so they import it from there.”
“I see, that makes sense.”
“And from here, we export sugar and silk brought by ship, along with salt and fish from Melrithia.”
“I see.”
I realize. The Azhibellian Empire boasts vast plains and a nomadic population.
They transport this meat all the way here.
They transport both live animals and salted or dried meat.
The dried meat my family eats back in Trieste City is likely made from this.
Conversely, Melrithia’s local products and imported goods are exchanged.
It’s a well-balanced trade system, with the trade volume ensuring equilibrium.
I see, it’s quite well-executed.
“Mmm, delicious.”
“Mm, it’s really tasty.”
“Delicious, meow.”
Well, everyone is just as usual.
This seems to be salted meat. The saltiness is stronger than I expected.
A salty flavor can be quite enjoyable too.
The slight sweetness of the bread complements it nicely.
There’s a version with both salt and pepper, and it’s unbelievably delicious, but pepper is expensive.
It’s likely imported directly, which is why it’s cheaper than in other cities, but it’s still pricey.
With our appetites satisfied, we head towards the square.
“Nyara-la~ papapa~ horiyara-la~”
Minya and the others recognize the music that’s coming through and start humming along together.
It’s just incredibly cute.
The people around us are smiling as they listen.
It’s really peaceful in a way.
I don’t know who or where the culprits are, but that whole ordeal about the royal family assassination seems almost unreal.
Perhaps it’s something not widely known.
Just when the memory of the previous death incident was fading over the years, “a member of the royal family dies” once again.
Externally, they probably pass it off as natural causes or illness.
It’s hard to imagine them officially declaring it as an assassination.
It truly seems peaceful here.
“Next up, I want to try this.”
“Oh, nice choice. The ‘Penge-ta,’ right?”
“Yeah!”
Having discussed it during our carriage journey, everyone is familiar with the name.
Penge-ta is a treat made by spreading a mixture of flour, water, and sugar thinly and then baking it.
It’s a famous confection in the capital city, available at various street stalls.
I’ve heard it’s cheaper here than in other cities because they directly import sugar.
On the griddle, several thin, five-centimeter-sized pancakes are lined up.
A quick flip, and they turn a lovely fox-like shade, enticingly baked.
Unlike crepes, they’re crisp, resembling delicate rice crackers, or perhaps sweetened galettes.
Well, just imagine something along those lines.
Oh, I recalled a better comparison. You know, the part that sticks out from a taiyaki. I used to enjoy that.
“Sweet, delicious!”
“This is yummy too.”
“Delicious, meow-meow.”
Oh, look, even Minya is all energetic. She must have found it quite tasty.
After the salty treats, now we’re indulging in sweetness. After all, they say girls are made of sugar.
We received an extra piece as a complimentary sample and got a set of ten.
We purchased four sets and shared them among us.
“The texture is delightfully crispy, and the mouthfeel is excellent.”
Indeed, as befits a renowned specialty of the capital city, it certainly garners high praise.
There’s still time until evening; what should we do next?
I’d like to see the port they say houses large sailing ships.
I also want to visit the fishing harbor and savor some seafood.
Yes, fresh fish. Perhaps not raw, but grilled fish would be nice.
And then there are clams, squid, octopus, crab, shrimp, and more.
Oh, and let’s make good use of my item box to stock up on salt, sugar, and pepper.
You can never have too many seasonings, and if there’s any surplus, it can be sold.
Since things are cheaper here in the capital city, it’s a good idea to buy them.
I also want to tour the royal palace and visit Mom’s ancestral baronial home.
Staying overnight is on the schedule at that baronial residence.
With so many things we want to do, I’m really looking forward to it.
