Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 122 First ice
The osmanthus tree was blooming with its small orange flowers.
“Ed, these flowers smell so nice.”
“Yeah, it’s osmanthus, probably.”
[Osmanthus – Plant – Common]
It bears many small orange flowers, emitting a unique and pleasant fragrance in the air.
But this particular tree is a male tree.
In Japan, there are only male trees, and they can only be propagated through cuttings since they don’t produce fruits.
However, in this world, there are original species like in China, so there are, of course, female trees as well.
In Japan, there is a related species called “Usugikunmokusei” that bears plum-like purple fruits.
In other words, it produces similar-looking fruits.
Well, I don’t think it’s precisely the same as the trees in Japan or China.
The former lord seems to have liked trees that bear fruits in the garden, making it enjoyable to stroll around the grounds.
Collecting them and making soap or something might be a good idea.
However, I’ll put that on hold since Harris, the productive unit that used to handle such tasks, isn’t here in Eldania.
And so, autumn deepened as time went on.
“Alright then, kid. I’ll be back in spring, so hang in there.”
“Goodbye. We’ll come back to earn more.”
“Goodbye.”
“Farewell.”
Each carpenter departed in the regular carriage or the rented horse-drawn carriage.
Winter is approaching soon.
Back at the main building of the Adventurer’s Guild, in front of the fountain square, there’s the Raffalier Church and the Seven Seven Company.
There are several shops along the main street, a row of tenement houses, another set of houses on the residential streets, and the warehouse district.
And then, there’s the citizens’ park.
A considerable number of houses have been completed.
With this, the year’s work is done.
Everyone is heading back to the Trieste City and the capital.
Winter brings snow. Unlike Trieste City, it seems that here, it can accumulate up to several centimeters.
Our hands are numb, and it’s difficult to work.
Especially for outdoor carpentry work, it’s a significant issue as it heavily relies on using hands.
Therefore, during winter, it seems we’ll be focusing on indoor renovation work, similar to the tasks of a construction company.
The capital city also has such jobs, so we’ll continue with them again next spring.
“The carriage has left, huh?”
“Yeah.”
“It feels lonely now.”
“Indeed. How about we have something warm to eat?”
“Sure.”
With the carpenters gone, all the lively men and energetic women have left.
Only a few guards managing the city gate and doing miscellaneous tasks remained, along with a couple of merchants.
There are a few food stalls in the barrack huts.
Apart from that, some newly established large shops, now running as both stores and warehouses.
Oh, and Bielcera -san has set up one of his branches here too.
Well, during winter, there’s regular travel between the capital city and Trieste City, so the Lord’s Mansion Hotel is still operational.
The maids are working harder than usual to do an excellent cleaning job before the New Year.
During winter, trade with the Elven Country is mostly halted.
Climbing the winter mountain, Mount Helhorn, requires a life-or-death determination.
Of course, there are some with reasons to pass through, but the western and eastern forts of Mount Helhorn are said to be closed and barricaded.
One winter morning…
Cuddled up with the Heating Fairies, Minya and I felt incredibly warm.
Children’s body temperature is higher and cozier than that of adults.
It feels so pleasant, but somehow, I managed to get out of bed and wake up.
“Peep, peep, peep, piu.”
A type of small bird I don’t usually see chirped from a branch of a tree with fallen leaves.
It had a stylish pattern of black and white with a touch of red.
It must be a bird that migrated from further north.
“The bird is cute, isn’t it?”
“Yeah.”
Minya is cute too, in her own way.
She always wears a maid outfit suitable for any season, so her appearance doesn’t change much.
Though you can’t see it, she adds an extra shirt underneath.
When it’s too cold, she also puts on a cape.
“Oh, it’s quite chilly today. There’s ice.”
“Ice? You’re right, it’s like shaved ice.”
“Yeah, indeed.”
Minya has seen ice both normally in the Elven Country and also created it with ice magic.
As for me, I don’t have many memories of seeing natural ice.
Trieste City is a bit warmer than here.
It’s just a slight difference, but Eldania is, after all, a bit more to the north.
“It’s so solid.”
“Yeah, it is.”
“And slippery too.”
“That’s right. Be careful not to slip when walking.”
“Got it.”
Even though I warned them, they are having fun sliding on the frozen puddle.
They are quite robust.
Their physical coordination seems good as they hardly ever fall.
Sliding back and forth, they are really enjoying it.
Both Minya and Ciel are doing great.
On the other hand, Lania is more of a strategic thinker, so she’s a bit cautious.
I see, this really reflects their personalities.
The breath they exhale appears like white smoke. Indeed, the air is considerably cold.
“Winter is almost here, huh?”
“Yeah.”
When I think of winter, it’s all about Christmas and New Year.
“That’s right. What do you want to eat?”
“Definitely, some fried chicken!”
“Yeah, for sure.”
Though it’s not exactly called Christmas, there’s a tradition of celebrating after the winter solstice.
There’s a suspicion that this custom was spread by the reincarnated individual, but in December, we decorate coniferous trees with various ornaments.
So, in my mind, I’ve been calling it Christmas.
As for New Year, it’s still New Year.
For Christmas, we eat chicken.
Whether it’s pheasant or regular chicken, well, we can’t exactly have Eggbird for dinner.
As for cakes, I’m not too familiar with them. I grew up in the slums, so I’ve never seen them.
When the temperature drops below zero, there’s a chance of snow.
As someone who isn’t too fond of the cold, I’m a little anxious.
Now, we have three girls this year.
I’m looking forward to what kind of Christmas and New Year it will be. A fun, joyful White Christmas. Let’s keep our expectations high!
