Chapter 119 Establishment of Helhorn hot springs and public baths
The weather has become quite cool. So, today we decided to go to the hot springs.
“We’re going to the hot springs!”
“Hot springs!!!”
Minya and the others are familiar with the term “hot springs.” They know that it involves soaking in hot water to warm the body.
“We’re heading to Helhorn Hot Springs.”
“Yes!”
And so, we’re taking Mark, who still seems to have plenty of free time, with us. The Rapunzel triplets also expressed their interest in joining, so they’ll be coming along this time.
“Alright, I’ll be off, my lord.”
“Yes, have a safe journey.”
We bid farewell to Gid-san and leave Eldania.
Instead of the southern gate towards Trieste City, we head north through the northern gate towards the capital city. If we were heading to the capital city, we would turn right and proceed east.
This is the route to Helhorn Mountain’s East Fort. We borrowed a carriage and all of us are riding together.
Clip-clop, the horses pull us forward.
In front of us, to the north, stands the towering Helhorn Volcano, with an elevation of over 3,000 meters. We are taking the East Fort route through the foothills of the eastern side and passing through the mountain pass, a path once used by the Elf Knights.
Usually, people travel between Eldania and the Elven Territory, but after Eldania collapsed, direct carriages from the capital city started to operate at a rapid pace, easing the situation considerably.
We steadily climb up the mountain path.
“The mountain is huge, isn’t it?”
“Yes,” Minya leans her head out of the carriage and looks up.
Indeed, Helhorn Mountain is imposing and magnificent when seen up close. The path meanders left and right as we ascend.
Before reaching the East Fort, there’s a small settlement. Steam rises from the village.
“Here we are, Helhorn Hot Springs.”
“Yay!”
“Hehehe.”
We stop the carriage in front of the hot spring inn.
Minya and the others excitedly jump off the carriage and run around. The older sisters watch them and laugh.
Finally, we’ve arrived at Helhorn Hot Springs. The faint scent of sulfur fills the air, the unmistakable fragrance of hot springs.
“Wow, look at all that steam! And the smell!”
“Yes, it’s amazing. So much hot water.”
“It’s like a paradise of hot springs.”
“Indeed.”
Minya and the others must have keen noses as they sniff around, getting all worked up by the scent. They look like playful dogs running around the yard, except they are cats.
Together, we enter the hot spring inn. Right beside the entrance, there’s a separate access point to the hot springs from the accommodation area.
“All right then, see you later. The baths are separate for men and women.”
“Wow, Ed is a boy, so see you later!”
Minya and the others charge into the women’s bath, followed by the Rapunzel triplets.
I, on the other hand, enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot spring with Mark.
“Hehehe!”
“Oh, stop it!”
“Wow, meow, meow!”
The hot springs are divided by a wall, and we can hear the girls’ voices from the other side. They seem to be having a great time over there. As long as they aren’t disturbing the other guests, it’s all right.
On the men’s side, though, there don’t seem to be any other customers at this time of day.
“It’s so peaceful.”
“Yes, indeed. Ahaha, Ed-kun.”
Mark and I laugh, listening to Minya and the others’ voices in the background.
“When we climb up here, we’ll reach the East Fort and then the Elven territory, right?”
“That’s correct.”
“Have you been there before?”
“Just once. I ventured into the Elven territory, but the Lord there was in a bad mood and I had to come back quickly.”
“I see.”
“After the collapse of Eldania, it seems that fewer people pass through here.”
“That’s true.”
“It would be nice if Eldania could be restored.”
“I agree.”
Splish-splash.
While contemplating the future of Eldania and the Elven territory, we soak in the warm water.
After leaving the bath, we decide to stay overnight here.
We still have some time.
“Hot spring manjuu!”
“Yay!”
The contented little fairies join us after their bath, and we all enjoy hot spring manjuu.
“Delicious!”
The filling of the manjuu is not red bean paste but sugar-pickled greens, like turnip leaves.
It’s not bad at all.
Apparently, they import these sugar-pickled greens from the Elven territory.
And now, dinner time.
It may be obvious, but it’s quite a feat that a mountainous hot spring inn in Japan can serve sashimi and other delicacies thanks to their logistics efforts. Of course, here in the inland area, there’s no seafood, but instead, the main dish was a hearty wild boar hot pot.
They also offered a variety of mountain vegetables, which were incredibly delicious in their own right.
The next day, we leisurely rode our horses down the mountain.
It was slightly chilly higher up, so the hot spring was just perfect.
As we descended, it started feeling a bit warmer.
Finally, we returned to Eldania.
By the way, even in Eldania, I wanted to take a bath.
The hot spring at the Lord’s mansion hotel had reopened in autumn, but it wasn’t accessible for the general public.
Therefore, we decided to set up the Eldania Public Bath in the city center.
The plan had been in place for a while, and it was nearly completed.
Before the official opening, we went on an inspection tour to Helhorn Hot Springs to learn more about their bathing culture.
Applause, applause.
“The Eldania Public Bath is now open!”
Applause and cheers filled the air as everyone, led by the skilled Dwarf craftsman, eagerly headed to the baths.
Working as a carpenter was always sweaty work, even after the summer had passed.
Due to religious beliefs, just like in modern Japan, the baths were separated for men and women. Although it didn’t affect the children, everyone entered their respective baths.
Moreover, we had arranged some private family baths as well.
In Trieste City, there used to be a water bath culture at the water facility near the fountain, but it had faded away with time. Nowadays, using a water towel to wipe oneself had become the norm, and public baths were only found in noble estates.
With Eldania being initially set up as temporary tents, there were similar concerns, and it seemed that those who cared used water towels to freshen up.
Now, thanks to the Eldania Public Bath, citizens could enjoy a relaxing bath experience once more.
