Chapter 118 Parks and warehouses, late autumn beacon day, harvest festival
We decided to establish a park in the heart of the residential area.
“This is going to be a park?”
“Yes, a park. There aren’t many of these in Trieste City.”
“That’s true.”
The park will have spaces for physical activities, a grassy area, a sandbox, and an array of trees. We’ll plant several edible acorn-bearing trees. Additionally, we’ll introduce cherry, maple, and ginkgo trees.
For shrubs, we’ll have hydrangeas, camellias, and more. To enhance the park’s charm, there will be water channels and even public slime restrooms.
Our vision for the park is to create a place where children can play even when the city develops, and there are no vacant lands left. We also aim to make it a peaceful retreat for families and couples to enjoy leisure time together.
In modern-day Japan, some people avoid drinking untreated water, but in this low-tech world, it’s perfectly normal to do so. The water from the water channels is used for daily life as well as for drinking.
Moreover, these parks serve as evacuation areas during emergencies like fires.
In one corner of the park, there is an emergency food storage facility—a warehouse.
“Wow, there are so many identical warehouses here.”
I went to see the completed warehouse district with Minya, but there wasn’t much else to see. Some of the warehouses had their doors open, and it was apparent that goods were being transported inside.
Therefore, we named the street right next to the main street in the capital city the “Warehouse District” and constructed identical warehouses there. In this world, famine is even scarier than fires, so half of the warehouses are designated as public food storage, while the other half are rented to private individuals.
It seems the capital city is quite cramped, and there aren’t many such spacious warehouses available. Having these food storage facilities also serves as a backup for the capital.
The city is starting to take shape, but it’s mostly superficial at this point—there’s still very little in terms of the daily lives of the residents.
Autumn is coming to an end.
Yes, that’s right. The “Day of the Beacon,” marking the end of autumn, is approaching.
“Smoke is rising!”
“It’s finally here.”
“Wow, look at the smoke swirling!”
From the lord’s mansion, we observed the scene with excitement.
Indeed, we can’t see the smoke from the capital city.
On the northern side, the foothills of the Helhorn Mountain are visible, with smoke rising from both the West Fort and the East Fort.
To the southwest, we can see the smoke from Barrel Town’s beacon, and a bit further to the west, the beacon smoke from Exis Bridge is visible.
In the western direction, we can spot several beacon smokes from Trieste City and the Watchtower Mountain.
“Look at the smoke!”
We laugh and cheer.
Although in an emergency, this would be a serious situation, on the Day of the Beacon, it’s a regular occurrence to see the smoke, so we’re quite relaxed about it.
Today is a clear and beautiful autumn day. Yesterday, it rained, and the air is exceptionally clear, allowing us to see far into the distance.
“Autumn’s clear sky, smoke rising in the distance – Ed, a haiku from the heart.”
Anyway, it’s been peaceful lately without any abnormalities, which is good.
The next day.
The morning starts with a lively atmosphere outside.
We know the reason for the commotion. It’s the day after the Day of the Beacon, which means it’s the Harvest Festival.
Delicious dishes are being carried outside one after another.
In the central square of the city, tables were set up, and a delightful array of dishes was on display.
Ale was also being served.
There were white bread, black bread, consomme soup, and tomato soup.
French fries, cookies, and even pizza were among the offerings, among many others.
The highlight of the feast was a whole roasted pig, sizzling and cooking on that spinning contraption.
“It all looks so delicious.”
“May we help ourselves to the food too?”
“Of course, go ahead!”
I casually grabbed some fries and started munching on them.
“Look, it’s the youngsters from the Lord’s Mansion! You’ve grown up, haven’t you? Here, have a drink, bottoms up!”
“No, that won’t do. Young ones, here, have some lemonade.”
“Yay!”
We quite like lemonade.
“Cheers!”
We raised our cups filled with lemonade and made a toast.
Casually, we enjoyed eating bread and pizza.
Mmm, it’s delicious!
“Hehehe.”
“It’s so tasty.”
“Yummy, meow meow!”
The hungry little fairies are still lively today, munching away happily.
They seem to be quite active, and there’s no sign of them gaining weight.
Back when they first arrived, they were so thin.
Minya, Lania, and even Ciel, they all looked as if they were just skin and bones.
The maids from the Lord’s Mansion are bringing out dishes and serving drinks.
They take turns resting and eating, so they seem to be doing fine.
They’ve put on a little weight, and their cheeks are plump.
They’re becoming more like little girls now.
But they still haven’t developed any curves on their chests yet.
Great! It seems they are growing well and thriving.
I think they’ve grown a bit taller in the past six months.
Their beauty is also shining brighter. Minya’s golden hair is stunning, and Lania’s hair resembles the clear blue sky, which is equally beautiful. Little Ciel remains as charming and adorable as ever.
Today is the Harvest Festival, a celebration of the year’s harvest, a time to give thanks to the gods. In Japan, “Labor Thanksgiving Day” is a similar occasion, called Niiname-sai. In English-speaking countries, Halloween might be considered a similar event.
Though cultures differ, Harvest Festivals are quite popular.
Now, let’s drink, eat, and sing!
“Nalalalalala na, nya nya ♪”
“Nyanyanya ♪”
Miinya and the others also began singing. Their voices harmonized in a charming chorus.
Today, they are singing a familiar song, a classic tune often sung during the Harvest Festival. The girls’ high-pitched voices seemed to blend into the clear blue sky, bringing joy to everyone in the city.
Their cute rendition of “Nyaninyanyaa~” was heartwarming. They were all dressed in matching maid outfits for children.
I’ll capture this moment in my heart like a photograph.
Time continues to pass, but let’s fill it with cherished memories.
