Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 117 Construction Rush and Mill
In the fall, a full-fledged construction rush began.
One reason was that during the summer, the temporary workers had time off due to the extreme heat.
Another reason was that construction companies from the capital city were hired by investors to participate in several projects.
“Wow, there are so many people here!”
Minya walked through the city streets, impressed by the bustling scene of construction.
Houses were being built all around.
What amazed Minya even more was the technique of building entire streets with the same specifications, resulting in rows of identical houses. It was quite a spectacle.
Even the main shopping street followed a similar pattern, with multiple buildings featuring common facilities such as storage areas and open spaces for displaying goods.
The construction process involved creating the foundation and then quickly assembling the wooden framework using a large workforce. The walls were made of stone.
Compared to modern Earth’s construction methods, it all had a simple and rustic feel, making the construction process faster and less complicated.
Everywhere, people were busy with woodwork and stone cutting.
City planning was decided through collaboration between myself, the interim ruler, Gid, and various individuals from organizations like the Adventurer’s Guild and the Church.
Officially, the land itself belongs to the ruler, at least in name.
In the capital city and Trieste City, there is hardly any new land available, so apart from rebuilding, there are no newly constructed houses. This has made the construction companies extremely enthusiastic.
Normally, they handle a lot of expansion, renovations, and repairs. However, large-scale new construction projects like this are highly profitable, so everyone is motivated to do their best.
Managing to handle the influx of people in eateries and accommodations has been a real challenge.
Eldania is located between Trieste City and the capital. It is closer to Trieste and borders the Elf territory, separated by mountains. Historically, there were trade relations with the Elves, and Eldania used to handle a lot of Elf-made potions and goods.
However, now that the trade routes with the Elf territory have been devastated, distribution companies are making efforts to run long-distance carriages between the Elf territory and the capital to cope with the situation.
To ensure logistics stability, it was deemed essential to establish a buffer between Eldania, the Elf territory, and the capital while wholesaling goods in Eldania. This presented a business opportunity for merchants, prompting them to invest in the city’s construction.
Those who build the buildings can generate rental income. Having real estate assets translates to passive income, and everyone wants that. In the capital city, opportunities for new passive income streams are limited, as it has become a stronghold of vested interests. Hence, emerging large-scale merchants and nobles are eager to invest in Eldania.
“Wow, it’s spinning around and around!”
Here, we have a flour mill. Minya’s eyes are spinning with excitement, and it’s quite amusing to watch. I wonder if her eyes ever get dizzy; it’s a curious thought.
Until now, we used small stone mills to grind wheat flour just enough for the day. However, with the increasing population, we can’t afford to spend time on such manual labor.
That’s why we decided to establish the indispensable “Flour Mill” for the city’s development. It’s what they call a waterwheel mill.
Though the city has a network of water channels, the terrain is not entirely flat, and there are some places with differences in elevation. Particularly downstream in the back, there was a two-meter drop, so we extended the water channel there and installed the waterwheel.
Thanks to the woodworking skills of the dwarven gentleman, we now have a waterwheel and a fully automated stone mill grinding machine installed. It operates 24 hours, producing wheat flour and more.
Previously, we used to import wheat from the capital and grind it into flour there, but it was economically unfavorable due to the higher prices. To achieve the city’s independent production, the waterwheel mill was essential.
If, by any chance, the bridge on the road to the capital were to collapse, it would hinder carriage transportation, and if thieves and monsters started to appear frequently, it would be a disaster. We need some flexibility to avoid such situations.
“There’s nothing around here. It’s a nice hill.”
“Yes.”
“Slimes are walking around, though.”
“That’s right. We’re going to build the Grand Eldania Cathedral and a school here.”
Then, a little distance away from the city center, on top of a hill, we plan to construct the “Holy Eldania Cathedral.” It will be a chapel for the Raffalier Church, and we aim to make it a tourist attraction.
The city center is quite cramped, making it challenging to establish a large church there. However, in the outskirts, there is available land.
Next to the cathedral, we have decided to build the “Eldania High School” and the “Eldania Central Elementary School.”
Furthermore, there are plans to create the “Eldania Library.”
Educational institutions are essential.
Currently, each city has established reasonably good educational facilities, and the capital boasts the best among them. However, the capacity is limited, with only about a hundred students per grade in each school.
Furthermore, being a coastal city near the sea, the capital is susceptible to major disasters like tsunamis. Having a backup in place is crucial.
Though Eldania has also suffered from the Stampede, we can’t keep talking only about other cities. We must strengthen our capabilities, and I believe a school with the capacity to enhance our strength is necessary.
Eldania High School aims to become the largest higher education institution in the country. However, it’s not something that can be achieved immediately; there are many things to consider, such as logistical arrangements and hiring faculty.
Well, thinking about it costs nothing, so I’ve discussed it with Gid-san. With his age and experience, he seemed to understand and approve of the idea, saying, “I see.”
It appears that he, too, recognizes the importance of education, just as he did when he was a primary school teacher.
Being close to the Elf territory and having a goal to develop into a city centered around alchemy and potion-making, I have a vague vision for the future.
It feels like playing a city development game, and it’s quite exhilarating. However, there’s no saving option; it’s a real challenge from the get-go.
