Chapter 103 Lanierda Cemetery and Summer Vacation
“Since we’ve seen the fields, how about stopping by the cemetery as well?”
“Huh? Yeah, sure.”
With Minya’s approval, we head towards the direction of the city walls from Lanierda Elementary School. It’s already visible ahead.
Just inside the northeastern city walls of Lanierda is a place known as Lanierda Cemetery.
“It’s a cemetery, huh?”
Minya softly remarks.
“Yeah, it’s where that old man and old lady rest.”
“Huh, the ones who let you and Ed live with them?”
“Yeah.”
The cemetery is lined with numerous graves, marked only by vertical wooden sticks instead of crosses. There are over a hundred of them. Among them are the graves of those who died during the eight years in Lanierda and soldiers who perished in the Eldania Stampede. It’s not always certain that the remains are buried there, as there are also legends of zombies, so cremation is preferred if possible.
A hole is dug, the body is placed inside, and wood is stacked on top before setting it on fire right there. Once the fire has extinguished, the grave is covered with soil, and that is the burial ritual in this place.
“To Belvildo, Sanaris, may you rest in peace.”
We pour water from our canteens onto the graves where the two lie side by side. Despite their wrinkled faces, they used to have a mischievous smile that had its own charm. The elderly couple, who had once held a decent status in Eldania, couldn’t bear the heat and cold in the shabby house of Lanierda. Sometimes I wonder if they could have lived longer if they had continued to reside in Eldania’s grand home.
We make the holy sign, a gesture Minya always performs.
“—May you find your way to the realm of Raffalier-sama.”
Minya and the rest of us make the same gesture, a standardized phrase for the deceased that leads them to the divine realm. Whether they are resting or embarking on a journey, it’s hard to tell, but it seems to have merged with the local religious customs.
“Alright, that’s good.”
“Yes.”
Having visited the third branch of the café and toured around, we once again join the carriage and return to Eldania.
It’s been a few days since we returned to Eldania. The hot days have been continuing. It’s the height of summer.
“It’s so hot!”
“Yeah.”
Minya is fanning herself with the flapping skirt of her sundress. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it’s hard to complain when it’s this hot.
“It would be nice to have magical devices like fans in this heat.”
“A fan?”
“Yeah, a fan.”
Question marks appear above Minya, Ciel, and Lania’s heads. I take out a thin wooden board and use it to create a breeze for everyone, like a makeshift fan.
“Aah, Ed, it’s refreshing.”
“Ed-kun, it feels great.”
“Ed-kun, it’s so nice and cool.”
We open our mouths wide and flap our hands even more to create an additional gust of wind.
“So, there’s a machine that can automatically do this fanning motion for you.”
“Wow!”
“That’s amazing.”
“Miau.”
“That’s right! I have a great idea. Let’s go underground, to the basement.”
“Huh?”
“Come on.”
I lead everyone to the basement.
“Oh, the basement…”
Everyone is a bit nervous because they’ve heard rumors about ghosts appearing in the basement. But it should be fine. There’s no way there are ghosts in the Lord’s Manor. Besides, the food storage and warehouses are located down here.
“It’s… cool, but…”
They stutter and mumble.
The three of them hold onto the hem of my clothes, trembling slightly.
Well, they look kind of cute like that.
I used to be a troublemaker high school student, after all. Yeah.
I open the warehouse.
There aren’t many items, but old things are scattered around haphazardly.
There are tables, chairs, and even candlesticks.
The adjacent warehouse has a similar feel.
“Oh, I have an idea. Let’s clean up these three warehouses and combine them into one.”
“Huh?”
“Then, one of them can be a rest area. A cool room for summer.”
“Like a secret hideout?”
“Yes, exactly. But we can also turn one into a guest room.”
“Guests in the basement?”
“Yes.”
So, I call the people who are available, and together we clean up the warehouses.
We don’t bother with dusting, but rather focus on packing everything neatly into one room.
In this way, we now have two usable rooms.
“Look, these are magical lamps.”
“Yes.”
We have several, around ten, magical lamps at our place, and we use them flexibly.
I place two of them in the summer rest area and the underground guest room.
“It feels like nighttime even though it’s daytime.”
In the summer rest area, there are two beds and a row of sofas. In the center, there’s a low table. The floor is covered with a carpet, allowing us to sit on the ground as well.
“It’s indeed comfortable to spend time here during the daytime, Ed-chan.”
“You’re right, Minya.”
“Hehe.”
Minya smiles with a playful grin. After coming in and out during the cleaning, it seems she has gotten used to the dim underground room.
“Are you okay with ghosts, Minya?”
“Eek! Are you saying a wraith might appear?”
“It won’t, right? It’s the Lord’s mansion after all.”
“Yeah, but still…”
She seems a bit anxious, looking left and right. Then she rubs her face against mine and giggles.
“As long as I stick with Ed-chan, I’ll be fine.”
“Oh, really? Then I will too.”
“Meow, meow!”
Following Minya’s lead, both Lania and Ciel press their faces against mine, leaving me in a disheveled state. It’s cool in the basement, but it’s warm around me.
In its own way, I feel the coolness and warmth in this room. I realize how luxurious it is. Despite the heat outside, surprisingly, I can still enjoy a comfortable time.
