Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 102 Vegetable field at Lanierda Elementary School
During the summer break, our group of kids took a break from the caravan and returned to Lanierda for a while. We had some administrative tasks to take care of and wanted to check out the atmosphere at the café.
“Wow, Ed, Ed, it’s Trieste Market!”
“Yeah, Miyna, brings back memories.”
“I wonder if everyone is doing well.”
The residential area of Elfir’s No. 1 Store is still available, so we can still stay there overnight. We were also curious about the abandoned field near Lanierda Elementary School.
Me, Miyna, Lania, and Ciel are not currently attending school. With the presence of helpers at Eldania Manor Hotel, once our morning tasks were done, we had free time except for lunch and evenings. During that spare time, we occasionally asked Gid-san to teach us history and mathematics. We also learned about pharmacy from Melun-san on occasion.
As we were getting off the carriage, we passed through the gates of Trieste Market.
“Oh, it’s Ed! You’re doing well, huh? You guys are still close as ever.”
“That’s the gatekeeper for you. Seems pretty happy, doesn’t he?”
“I know, right? Ahaha, he recently got himself a girlfriend.”
“Well, that’s great. Congratulations.”
“Thank you.”
Even the gatekeeper, who used to joke about having three arms, seems to have found love when spring came around. Well, it’s already summer, though. It was a late blooming spring.
And so, we returned to our home in Trieste Market. Come to think of it, my mother, Tomaria, hasn’t returned yet.
Lania also returned home to meet her parents. She’s already calling herself a big sister, so there won’t be any tears, but they embraced each other, so it should be fine.
The next morning, I prepared breakfast and headed to school with Lania.
“Hey, everyone! How are you?”
“Oh, Ed, you’re alive! Miyna-chan, Lania-chan, and Ciel-chan too.”
“Hehe…”
The three of them blushed a little, feeling a bit shy from the attention. After all, they’re the Holy Maiden, Valkyrie, and Suzumiko.
The names Holy Maiden and Valkyrie were given during the infamous “Ed’s One-Week Poop War,” while Ciel’s nickname, was given after the battle against the goblins.
Actually, all three of them have already been invited to join the Girls’ Magical Battalion as reserves. They can’t become full members until they reach the required age, so serving as reserves is a loophole. They accepted the offer under the condition that they can still go to Eldania.
Being in the reserves still comes with a monetary reward. We each receive a gold coin per month. It may seem little compared to our income, but if you think of it as being equal to our rent, it’s quite significant.
In times of emergency, we have the obligation to fight alongside the Eldania Security Force, so in terms of putting our lives on the line, it’s definitely not a cheap price.
As for me, I’m affiliated with the Knight Order’s reserves, and I also receive a gold coin. It’s quite something for a six-year-old, as if they want to keep me interested in valuable properties.
“Oh, and about the vegetable garden…”
“Yeah, it’s coming along decently. I also put up support poles for the tomatoes.”
“Harris, how have you been?”
“My parents are doing well. Our business is thriving, thanks to Ed. I’m grateful.”
“Well, I’m glad to hear that.”
Even I feel a bit bashful when receiving direct praise. Harris has also become much more amiable. He used to be the ringleader of troublemakers, but now he’s changed. Perhaps being hungry played a role, and it seems like he’s been under the strict guidance of Dridon-san. With Dridon’s keen eye for quality, there’s no room for slacking off.
Harris is currently increasing the harvest of herbs. It seems that most varieties wither away from late autumn to winter, making it impossible to ship them during that time. To avoid this problem, he has been storing stock in the warehouse, even if it’s just a small amount of dried herbs. I was impressed to hear that he practices the first-in-first-out method.
That clever idea came from Dridon, Bielcera from the shop, and Bayern from the church. It seems that having influential business partners helps with growth.
With that said, after catching up with my old friend, we took a look at the field.
“I’ve been harvesting the ones that are ready recently. Hope you don’t mind.”
“Of course not. It would be a waste if they spoil, so feel free to harvest them as soon as they’re ready and sell any surplus. You can use the profits to buy school supplies or dried meat.”
“Sounds good. Chalk, bundles of paper, and such. Also, I took the liberty of sowing seeds for the second batch.”
“Great, thanks. And what about the money?”
“We’re making a bit of profit from Dridon-san and my place.”
“Business is doing well, huh?”
“Yeah, something like that.”
By staggering the timing of the seed sowing, we can extend the harvest period. Even the initial sowing was done gradually, with a little bit each week.
Today, we’ll harvest before noon, and it will be used for stir-fried Ilk beans and vegetables. Interestingly, there’s rabbit meat and dried meat added, making it quite appetizing.
“It has become more extravagant.”
“Yeah, adventurers occasionally contribute with some meat, and we all chip in for the dried meat.”
“I see.”
Well, if they continue to make a profit, they’ll be able to have meals like this. That’s a relief, a great relief.
“What about theft?”
“It happens. But it’s usually just small-scale thefts during the night or something. If I were to bring such a quantity to the morning market or the guild all at once, it would be like confessing to being the thief.”
“I see, that makes sense.”
“That’s how it is. There are some who steal their own share for personal consumption, but there’s not much we can do about it.”
“So, you overlook it to some extent?”
“Well, we caught one person who was stealing quite conspicuously during the night patrols. The rest has been resolved and left alone.”
“Understood. Well, I guess it’s fine then.”
“Yeah, it’s troublesome to deal with.”
We cultivate because we’re struggling to have enough to eat, but there are people in Lanierda who can only afford beans.
Most of them are Eldania citizens, and they have a strong bond and unity, so they generally avoid doing anything wrong.
While there are some bad individuals among those who come and go like us, there’s a sense of community and mutual surveillance in the neighborhood. If someone were openly engaged in wrongdoing, they would stand out, so the public order isn’t that bad.
